Mahfuzur Rahman was the youngest member of his community board in 2015.
Today he’s Vice President of East Harlem’s Taft Houses Resident Association. He’s also one of the latest recipients of the Resident Scholarship program administered jointly by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and the City University of New York (CUNY).
The ceremony was held this past Tuesday.Twenty-three CUNY students residing in NYCHA housing received $1,000 scholarships at a ceremony at the Borough of Manhattan Community College on Tues., Sept. 18th. The funds are for education-related expenses, including tuition, books and fees. More than 170 NYCHA residents have benefitted from this program since 2005.
Rahman, 20, is a City College student. He said the scholarship is important for NYCHA residents, “because [though] you could not have gone away for college, but you also feel satisfied that you have a place in New York, you have a place in your community, and that your community is going to support you, even in your educational endeavors.”
This year, the program has grown to include even more scholarships, including the Levine Family Scholarship, which is funded by former NYCHA resident and CUNY graduate Jeffrey Levine; the Regina A. Figueroa Memorial Scholarship for residents with disabilities, which is named for a NYCHA employee who passed away and is funded by a current NYCHA employee; and the Kofi Hormeku Scholarship provided by Nehemiah Economic Development, Inc., for residents living in Brownsville, East New York, or Ocean Hill, Brooklyn.

The NYCHA-CUNY Resident Scholarship Program offers four distinct scholarships each worth $1000. All scholarships require that the applicant be currently a NYCHA public housing resident; be currently enrolled as an undergraduate at CUNY; has to have earned 30 or more credits; and has to have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Ayana Chung, 24, grew up in a foster home. A Kingsborough Community College student, she studies mental health and human services and plans to become a social worker. She was awarded the Regina A. Figueroa Scholarship for her commitment to young people in need. “When I was worried about being evicted and homeless, I wasn’t doing well in school,” Chung said. “I’m so grateful to have NYCHA and I’m happy they provide these resources to New Yorkers that need them.”
“Between CUNY and NYCHA, our partnership serves more than one million residents of New York City,” said Chris Rosa, Ph.D., CUNY’s Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. “Together we share an ethic of care and a commitment to the holistic development of the individuals we serve, and these students are the embodiment of that partnership.”

Veintitrés estudiantes de CUNY que residían en viviendas de NYCHA recibieron becas de $1,000 dólares en una ceremonia en el Community College del condado de Manhattan el martes 18 de septiembre. Rahman, de 20 años, es un estudiante de City College.
