Spin cycle through and through

Whether you’re tempted to pop a wheelie along the way or plow through over 40 miles without pause, there is a Tour on its way for you.
The 19th Annual Tour de Bronx, the largest free cycling event in New York State, is expected to bring out nearly 6,000 cyclists this coming Sat., Oct. 27th.
The Tour de Bronx lives up to its name, as it kicks off at the Grand Concourse and East 161st Street at the Bronx County Courthouse, and makes it way through Crotona Park, the Bronx Greenway Bike Path in Soundview Park, St. Raymond’s Cemetery, Pelham Bay Park, Woodlawn Cemetery, Van Cortlandt Park, and ends at the New York Botanical Garden. There are two different routes, a 25-mile tour and a 40-mile tour; the latter includes more scenery and additional stops.
Unlike its French counterpart, the Tour de Bronx is meant to be a leisurely event, said Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz, Jr. at the event’s launch this past Tues., Oct. 8th.

“This is a tour, not a race,” he emphasized.
“Riding a bike around our borough is the healthiest way to see the best of the Bronx, and I am delighted to hear the positive feedback from visitors each year when they participate in the ‘Tour de Bronx,’” he added.
President Díaz will be committing to the 25-mile tour on a borrowed Cannondale, and he divulged some of his own plans to take in the sights.
“I will get off the bike so often.”
The Borough President has participated in the Tour for several years. Last year, he paused at Soundview Park, and was finally able to enjoy the trails.
“I never got the chance to explore the trail until I went on the tour,” he recalled.
Another of his favorite stops is St. Raymond’s cemetery, though “not to be morbid,” he said. Rather, he stopped to pay homage to friends and family that are buried there.
This year’s, the Tour’s theme is “BronX Marks the Spot”.
Organizers want participants to “Xcercise, Xplore and Xperience” the borough.
This year, the tour is co-hosted by Transportation Alternatives, the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation, The Bronx Tourism Council, Montefiore Medical Center, St. Barnabas Hospital, Bronx Lebanon Medical Center, Coca-Cola and Domino’s.
The tour was started to show residents and visitors how easy and fun it can be to get around on a bike, explained Ben McRoberts, Events Director at Transportation Alternatives, a transportation advocacy organization.
“The thing about a bike is that you can cover more ground than when you’re walking, and you have more access than you do when you’re boxed up inside a vehicle,” he said.
McRoberts said he first learned how to ride a bike when he was six.

“That’s how you got around. As a kid, you realize the freedom it gives you,” he noted. “You never lose that childish joy of riding a bike.”
Last year the ride drew 6,200 cyclists, and the numbers are expected to surpass those.
Last year’s event welcomed registrants from all over the United States, as well as Europe, South America and even Asia.
“Given the amount of positive coverage we’ve been enjoying in national and international media, we expect to see an increase in visitors participating in this event,” said Olga Luz Tirado, Executive Director of The Bronx Tourism Council. “We are anxious to show off our borough to the rest of the world.”
Moreover, numerous partners and city agencies have joined together to make the Tour a full day’s experience for all.
Metro North Railroad will waive their bicycle permit requirements and quantity limits for the day, allowing for groups of riders to participate. The Department of Transportation will fit and distribute free bicycle helmets beginning at 8 a.m., while supplies last. Coca Cola will distribute refreshments, and pizza will be provided after the ride courtesy of Domino’s. There will also be a music festival afterwards.
One of the cyclists who will be participating is Paul Meissner, the Director of Research Program Development at Montefiore Medical Center.
“You can see the whole city twinkle,” said Paul Meissner, Director of Research Program Development at Montefiore Medical Center.
Meissner got into bicycling as he underwent rehab after hurting his knee chopping wood in his yard.
This will not be the first time he goes on the Tour. He already has his favorite legs: Soundview Park and SUNY Maritime College, which sits on a peninsula under the Throgs Neck Bridge. The view from SUNY Maritime College offers vistas of Long Island Sound, and Manhattan and Queens.
“You can see the whole city twinkle,” he said.
While thrilled to hear the observation, Mary Muecke, the Executive Director of External Affairs at SUNY Maritime College, was not sure she’d be joining in the Tour.
The idea of riding a bike for 25 or 40 miles seemed daunting, she said, but she might still be swayed to give it a try after hearing the Borough President emphasize that the tour is not meant to be a race.
“I might join,” she said.
The SUNY Maritime campus is on the 40-mile tour, and Muecke was certain that cyclists would be nicely surprised by the vistas offered by the 52-acre campus’s vantage point on the peninsula.
“You can’t beat it. It’s a unique peninsula,” she said.

Si usted está tentado a hacer estallar una rueda en el camino o abrirse paso a más de 40 millas sin pausa, hay un tour en camino para usted.
Se espera que el 19° Tour anual del Bronx, el mayor evento de ciclismo libre en el estado de Nueva York, traiga a cerca de 6,000 ciclistas el próximo sábado 27 de octubre.
El Tour del Bronx hace honor a su nombre, ya que se inicia en Grand Concourse y la calle este 161 en la Corte del Condado de Bronx, y hace su camino a través de Crotona Park, el Bronx Greenway Bike Path en Soundview Park, el cementerio de St. Raymond, Pelham Bay Park, el cementerio de Woodlawn, Van Cortlandt Park, y termina en el Jardín Botánico de Nueva York. Hay dos rutas diferentes, un recorrido de 25 millas y uno de 40 millas, este último incluye más paisaje y paradas adicionales.

“Este es un tour, no una carrera”, destacó.
“Andar en bicicleta por nuestro condado es la manera más sana de ver lo mejor del Bronx y estoy encantado de escuchar los comentarios positivos de visitantes cada año cuando participan en el Tour del Bronx”, agregó.
El presidente Díaz se comprometió al recorrido de 25 millas en un Cannondale prestado, y divulgó algunos de sus propios planes para disfrutar de las vistas.
“Voy a bajar de la bicicleta seguido”.
El presidente del condado ha participado en el Tour durante varios años. El año pasado se detuvo en Soundview Park y finalmente fue capaz de disfrutar de los senderos.
“Nunca tuve la oportunidad de explorar el sendero hasta que participé en el tour”, recordó.
Otra de sus paradas favoritas es el cementerio de St. Raymond, a pesar de “no ser morboso”, dijo. Más bien, se detuvo para rendir homenaje a los amigos y familiares que están enterrados allí.
Este año el tema del Tour es “BronX Marks the Spot”.

El tour se inició para mostrar a los residentes y visitantes lo fácil y divertido que puede ser moverse en bicicleta, explicó Ben McRoberts, director de eventos de Transportation Alternatives, una organización de defensa de transporte.
“Lo que pasa con una bicicleta es que puedes cubrir más terreno que cuando estás caminando, y tienes más acceso que cuando estás en el interior de un vehículo”, dijo.
McRoberts dijo que aprendió a andar en bicicleta cuando tenía seis años.
“Así es como te mueves. De niño te das cuenta de la libertad que te da”, señaló. “Uno nunca pierde esa alegría infantil de andar en bicicleta”.
El año pasado la carrera atrajo a 6,200 ciclistas y se espera que el número sea superado.
El evento del año pasado dio la bienvenida a solicitudes de todo Estados Unidos, así como de Europa, América del Sur e incluso Asia.
“Teniendo en cuenta la cantidad de cobertura positiva que hemos podido disfrutar en los medios de comunicación nacionales e internacionales, esperamos ver un aumento en el número de visitantes que participan en este evento”, dijo Olga Luz Tirado, directora ejecutiva del Consejo de Turismo del Bronx. “Estamos ansiosos por mostrar nuestro condado al resto del mundo”.
Por otra parte, numerosos socios y agencias de la ciudad se han unido para hacer de la experiencia del tour de un día completo para todos.
Metro North Railroad no aplicará sus requisitos de autorización para bicicletas, ni los límites cuantitativos para el día, lo que permite a los grupos de conductores participar. El Departamento de Transporte ajustará y distribuirá cascos gratuitos a partir de las 8 am, hasta agotar existencias. Coca Cola distribuirá refrescos y habrá pizza después del paseo, cortesía de Domino´s. También habrá un festival de música después.
Uno de los ciclistas que participará es Paul Meissner, Director del Programa de Desarrollo de la Investigación en el Centro Médico Montefiore.
Meissner se introdujo al ciclismo como rehabilitación tras lesionarse la rodilla cortando madera en su patio.
Esta no será la primera vez que sale en el Tour. Él ya tiene sus tramos favoritos: Soundview Park and SUNY Maritime College, que se encuentra en una península bajo el puente Throgs Neck. SUNY Maritime College ofrece vistas del estrecho de Long Island y Manhattan y Queens.

Aunque estaba encantada de escuchar todo, Mary Muecke, directora ejecutiva de asuntos exteriores en SUNY Maritime College, no estaba segura de unirse al Tour.
La idea de montar en bicicleta durante 25 o 40 millas parecía desalentadora, dijo, pero todavía podría ser influenciada para darle una oportunidad después de escuchar al presidente del condado destacar que el tour no pretende ser una carrera.
“Podría unirse”, dijo.
El campus SUNY Maritime está en el recorrido de 40 millas, y Muecke estaba segura que los ciclistas podrían ser agradablemente sorprendidos por las vistas que ofrece el punto de vista del campus de 52 hectáreas en la península.
