UCHC hosts Three Kings’ community celebration

Though the original journey was from the east, this celebration was in the West.

The West Bronx, specifically, was where the most recent gathering in honor of the Three Kings’ Day holiday was held.

As hosted by Union Community Health Center (UCHC), the event brought in young children and their families from the local CAMBA housing facility to take part in an afternoon celebration with food and gifts.

The unused and new toys had been collected by students from M.S. 391, and Fordham University students donated winter apparel consisting of hats, gloves and socks.

“Each year, we try to focus on either activism or giving back to the community in some way,” explained Michelle Jervis-White, a Department of Education social worker who helps lead M.S. 391’s school’s “Girl Circle,” a leadership initiative.

“I approached the young ladies and we took a vote on what we would do this year. They decided that they wanted to conduct a toy drive in the school,” said Jervis-White. “We got teachers together, put flyers around the school. We went into classrooms and spoke about what our intentions were and we asked everyone to get involved and drop off toys.”

Three Kings Day, which is observed on January 6, marks the official conclusion of the holiday season for many who observe the Christian faith. Also known as the Epiphany, the holiday commemorates the biblical tale in which three kings – Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar – visit the baby Jesus 12 days after he was born.

As per the Gospel of Matthew, the three kings find Jesus and his family by following a star’s trail as it crossed the sky. They traveled together through the desert to Bethlehem to present the infant Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

“At first, I wasn’t familiar with Three Kings Day, but Ms. Jervis explained it to me,” said eighth grader and Girl Circle member Aminata Touray. “We did a toy drive to give to the community. And not only the Girl Circle gave, but all of 391 contributed.”

“Giving back is really important to me,” noted Touray. “This year, we wanted to give back more.”

UCHC provides mobile health services at the shelter, located at Webster Avenue, throughout the year.

Luz E. Correa, UCHC Vice President of Government and Community Affairs, credited the collaborative efforts of all involved for the success of the Three Kings’ event.

“The kids at MS 391 really were the inspiration behind this,” said Correa. “Last year, Ms. Jervis, who heads this particular program, reached out to us and asked us if we had any families that would be in need of any gifts during the holiday season. Of course, we were so open to that. We did identify a few patients that were in need and were very happy to receive the gifts.”

This year, said Correa, the group decided that, much like in the original biblical story, the gift-givers and the recipients should meet in person.

“We thought, what a great gesture this is, and how better it would be for not only the kids that were receiving, but also the kids that were donating and see if we could get these children together.”
Correa continued, “As long as 391 is willing to donate, we are willing to bring them all in together, patients and students.”

Though the holidays are often described as the “most wonderful time of the year,” the season can also serve as a source of stress and sadness for those feeling disconnected from family and a larger sense of community. The emphasis on gifts for those who in financial need can also be worrying.

A CAMBA resident, Ms. Felicia, said that the facility’s administration sought to alleviate these concerns.

“Fortunately, our shelter has a lot of community outreach and a lot of affiliation with things and programs in this area,” she noted. “So, CAMBA printed a flyer and reached out to us individually in the shelter and let us know that this opportunity for our children was available today.”

Ms. Felicia said it was heartening to know that neither she nor her family were forgotten.

“It feels so awesome to know that despite our situation, despite our hardships, someone actually cares,” she said. “Someone remembered my children. It makes me feel fantastic.”

Gifts distributed on Monday included board games, dolls, skateboards, basketballs, footballs, action figures and more.

“This is my first time giving back,” said Girl Circle member Debbie Roberts. “It feels good.”

It was a contagion of joy, as students from M.S. 391 and Fordham University mingled with smiling children as they carefully chose their gifts and donned their new apparel while enjoying pizza.

“This is such a joyous time for my son,” said CAMBA resident Jacqueline, who brought her six-year-old to the party. “He was so excited to come and receive such a cool gift. But outside of the gift, it’s the love and the affection that he was shown here today. I know that he feels appreciated and it was great to see him take part and share the same enthusiasm with the others that were present.”

Aunque el viaje original era del este, esta celebración fue en el oeste.

El West Bronx, específicamente, fue el lugar en donde se celebró la reunión más reciente en honor de la fiesta del Día de los Reyes Magos.

Organizado por el Centro Comunitario de Salud Union (UCHC, por sus siglas en inglés), el evento reunió a niños pequeños y sus familias de las instalaciones locales de vivienda de CAMBA para participar en una celebración vespertina con comida y regalos.

Los juguetes nuevos y sin usar fueron recolectados por estudiantes de la M.S. 391, y los estudiantes de la Universidad Fordham donaron ropa de invierno consistente en sombreros, guantes y calcetines.

“Cada año, tratamos de centrarnos en el activismo o en retribuir a la comunidad de alguna manera”, explicó Michelle Jervis-White, una trabajadora social del Departamento de Educación que ayuda a dirigir el

“Círculo de chicas” de la escuela, una iniciativa de liderazgo.

“Me acerqué a las señoritas y votamos sobre lo que haríamos este año. Decidieron que querían conducir una colecta de juguetes en la escuela”, dijo Jervis-White. “Reunimos a los maestros, pusimos volantes en toda la escuela. Entramos en las aulas y hablamos sobre cuáles eran nuestras intenciones y les pedimos a todos que se involucraran y donaran juguetes”.

El Día de los Reyes Magos, que se celebra el 6 de enero, marca la conclusión oficial de la temporada de fiestas para quienes observan la fe cristiana. También conocida como la Epifanía, la fiesta conmemora el cuento bíblico en el que tres reyes, Melchor, Gaspar y Baltazar, visitan al niño Jesús 12 días después de su nacimiento.

Jervis me lo explicó”, dijo Aminata Touray, alumna de octavo grado y miembro del Círculo de Chicas Girl. “Hicimos una campaña de juguetes para retribuir a la comunidad. Y no solo el Círculo de Chicas participó, sino que todos los 391 contribuyeron”.

“Retribuir es realmente importante para mí”, señaló Touray. “Este año, queríamos retribuir más”.

UCHC proporciona servicios móviles de salud en el refugio, ubicado en la avenida Webster, durante todo el año.

Luz E. Correa, vicepresidenta de Asuntos Gubernamentales y Comunitarios de UCHC, reconoció los esfuerzos de colaboración de todos los involucrados por el éxito del evento de los Tres Reyes Magos.

“Los chicos de la MS 391 realmente fueron la inspiración detrás de esto”, dijo Correa. “El año pasado, la Sra. Jervis, quien dirige este programa en particular, nos contactó y nos preguntó si teníamos a alguna familia que necesitara algún regalo durante la temporada navideña. Por supuesto, estábamos muy abiertos a eso. Identificamos a algunos pacientes que lo necesitaban y estaban muy contentos de recibir los regalos”.

Este año, dijo Correa, el grupo decidió que, al igual que en la historia bíblica original, los donantes y los destinatarios debían reunirse en persona.

“Pensamos, qué gran gesto es este, y qué mejor sería no solo para los niños que reciben, sino también para los niños que donan, ver si podíamos reunirlos”.

Correa continuó: “Mientras la 391 esté dispuesta a donar, estamos dispuestos a reunirlos a todos, pacientes y estudiantes”.

Aunque las fiestas a menudo se describen como el “momento más maravilloso del año”, la temporada también puede servir como una fuente de estrés y tristeza para quienes se sienten desconectados de la familia y de un sentido más amplio de comunidad. El énfasis en los obsequios para quienes tienen necesidades financieras también puede ser preocupante.

Una residente de CAMBA, la Sra. Felicia, dijo que la administración de la instalación buscó aliviar estas preocupaciones.

“Afortunadamente, nuestro refugio tiene mucho alcance comunitario y mucha afiliación con cosas y programas en esta área”, señaló. “Entonces, CAMBA imprimió un volante y nos contactó individualmente en el refugio y nos hizo saber que esta oportunidad para nuestros hijos estaba disponible hoy”.

Felicia dijo que fue alentador saber que ni ella ni su familia fueron olvidados.

“Se siente increíble saber que a pesar de nuestra situación, a pesar de nuestras dificultades, a alguien le importa”, dijo. “Alguien se acordó de mis hijos. Me hace sentir fantástica”.

Los regalos distribuidos el lunes incluyeron juegos de mesa, muñecas, patinetas, pelotas de baloncesto, pelotas de fútbol, figuras de acción y más.

“Esta es la primera vez que retribuyo”, dijo la miembro del Círculo de Chicas Debbie Roberts. “Se siente bien”.

Fue un contagio de alegría, ya que los estudiantes de la M.S. 391 y dela Universidad Fordham se mezclaron con niños sonrientes mientras elegían cuidadosamente sus regalos y se ponían su ropa nueva mientras disfrutaban de la pizza.

“Este es un momento muy alegre para mi hijo”, dijo Jacqueline, residente de CAMBA, quien llevó a su hijo de seis años a la fiesta. “Estaba tan emocionado de venir y recibir un regalo tan genial. Pero fuera del regalo, es el amor y el afecto que se le mostró aquí hoy. Sé que se siente apreciado y fue genial verlo participar y compartir el mismo entusiasmo con los demás presentes”.
