Yankee Stadium was home to a friendly pre-season match between Liverpool F.C. and Wrexham A.F.C. on June 29.

Whether in a preseason friendly or at the Champions League Final, Liverpool Football Club (F.C.) fans make sure they are heard and seen.

Garbed in red kits, they were roaring on River Avenue as they surged into Yankee Stadium on July 29th to see their beloved Reds face off against Wrexham Association Football Club (A.F.C.) as part of their American preseason tour.

A forever kind of love.

It is a storied tradition to root for a team founded in 1892 that has become one of the most successful British clubs of all time – with 20 league titles, 8 Football Association Challenge Cups, and 6 European Cups to date – and an immensely popular one with a devoted international fan base.

With his whole chest.

The Kopites, as Liverpool fans are called, poured in from across the metropolitan area and beyond to see two of the oldest clubs in football history face off.

Although the bleachers may have seemed engulfed by waves of crimson garb, the Welsh football club also had plenty of support.

The legend lives on.

Established in 1864, Wrexham has recently gained a new generation of fans, including a few significant backers in Hollywood. The oldest Welsh club in football history was acquired in 2021 by actor and entrepreneur Ryan Reynolds with partner Rob McElhenney, and in the years since, the team has found massive success climbing the English football pyramid. The club became the first team in English football history to achieve three promotions in a row, moving directly from 2022 to 2025 from National League up to the Championship (the second tier of English football). Wrexham now enters the 2026-27 Championship season as one of the favorites to win promotion to the Premier League, which many consider to be among the most challenging in the world.

It was a full house with over 40,000 fans in attendance.

Beyond their impressive catapult, the underdog team’s fighting spirit was also on display in Welcome to Wrexham, the 2022 television documentary series. The attention has only grown after Wrexham A.F.C., managed by Phil Parkinson, defeated Manchester United F.C. 1–0 on July 18th in an opening pre-season friendly in Helsinki, Finland.

The “97” honors the lives lost in the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium human crush, the deadliest disaster in British sporting history.

But it was time for el balón in The Bronx as the sun set on Wednesday.

Liverpool F.C. took to the pitch in front of more than 40,000 fans eager to take stock of recently hired head coach Andoni Iraola, who joined the team from A.F.C. Bournemouth.

Dusk descends.

The excitement only grew at 7:30 p.m. kickoff as captains Dominik Szoboszlai (Liverpool F.C.) and Matthew James (Wrexham A.F.C.) exchanged club flags.

Although competitive, the two teams demonstrated respect throughout, with players helping to pick up their opponents after a few scary falls. Though the first half ended in a 0-0 draw, the teams showed verve.

Representing.

Once the second half kicked off, managers looked to their respective benches for substitutions. One swap on Liverpool’s side was 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha for Calum Scanlon in the 46th minute. The teenager made sure to make his presence known. Despite struggling to find the breakthrough goal, Ngumoha finally got a pass from his captain Szoboszlai, dribbled into the box, and scored the winning goal in the 75th minute off a deflection.

In profile.

It would prove to be the only goal in the game – delighting enthralled Liverpool fans.

The U.S. tour continues, with the English club making its way to Chicago’s Soldier Field to play Leeds United on August 2nd, while the Welshmen head to Philadelphia to play Sunderland on the same day. These two friendlies wrap up the English Football League’s U.S. summer tour.
