Older residents in the borough have a new destination.
The Gun Hill Neighborhood Senior Center celebrated a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new facility, located at 3377 White Plains Road.
“We are happy to introduce our accomplishment to the seniors, community and those who helped bring this program to fruition,” said Anderson Torres, Chief Executive Officer of R.A.I.N. Inc.
The grand opening marked the launch of another holistic, integrated program by the organization that is one of the largest providers of social services for seniors in the Bronx. R.A.I.N. currently has 17 service sites throughout the borough and one in Northern Manhattan that offer a comprehensive continuum of services intended to help seniors live safely and independently in their homes.
Among those in attendance were Assemblymember Carl Heastie; Councilmember Andy King; R.A.I.N. Board Chair John J. DeMartino; the Bronx Borough President’s Office Director of Senior Services Larcenia Walton; and Maxine Sullivan, representing Congressmember Eliot L. Engel.
Among its amenities, the Gun Hill Neighborhood Senior Center offers a gym, dining room, computer lab, entertainment gallery, a garden and a pool room.
“I’m so glad we are able to see this dream come true,” said a tearful Evelyn Cintrón, Center Director. “We’re thrilled to be able to continue offering the high quality service that has typified our work for decades.”
She explained that 80 seniors were currently registered at the center, and she expected that number would increase quickly.
“We’re [going to] welcome many more seniors during the upcoming months,” she said. “We are truly excited.”
It is gratifying work for the close-knit staff, which is comprised of four individuals.
“We have been working this way since we opened,” said Program Coordinator Alma Hagen. “We are [looking forward] to make this team bigger.”
Torres lauded the noted that the opening came at a momentous time.
“We value the loyalty of the community all these years,” he said. “I’m also excited to announce that the celebration will continue all year long. R.A.I.N. is getting ready to commemorate, on October 30th, 50 years of service.”
“And there is even more to add to the list of milestones: our founder Beatrice Castiglia-Catullo will soon turn 98 years old,” he added.
The announcement drew sustained applause from guests, particularly as Castiglia-Catullo rose to speak.
“Words cannot express how wonderful is to be here in this new building and see so many familiar faces here celebrating with us. It’s been a long, but very rewarding journey,” she said. Castiglia-Catullo founded R.A.I.N. in 1964 as a charitable effort to grant in-home care for older persons leaving the hospital with no one at home to care for them. She experience firsthand the hardship of caring for an elderly homebound relative with no outside assistance, and sought to address that need.
In attendance as well was New York City Councilmember Andy King, who made note of his own efforts to assist elder residents, including rent increase exemptions.
“I want to say to all seniors of the community you have my commitment, you have my word,” he said. “It is my mission to guarantee that you will receive the services that you deserve [for] a better quality of life.”

Los residentes de mayor edad en el condado tienen un nuevo destino.
El Centro de Envejecientes ‘Gun Hill Neighborhood’ celebró una ceremonia de corte de cinta para su nueva facilidad localizada en el 3377 en White Plains Road.
“Estamos contentos de introducir nuestro logro a los envejecientes, la comunidad y aquellos que ayudaron a que este programa se convirtiera en realidad”, dijo Anderson Torres, oficial ejecutivo de R.A.I.N., Inc.
La gran apertura marcó el lanzamiento de otro programa holístico, integrado por la organización que es uno de los mayores proveedores de servicios sociales para envejecientes en el Bronx. R.A.I.N. actualmente cuenta con 17 lugares de servicios a través del condado y uno en el Norte de Manhattan que ofrece una serie completa de servicios destinados a ayudar a los envejecientes a vivir de forma segura e independiente en sus hogares.
Entre aquellos que asistieron estaba el Asambleísta Carl Heastie; el Concejal Andy King; el presidente de la junta de R.A.I.N. John J. DeMartino; la directora de servicios a los envejecientes de la Oficina del Presidente del condado del Bronx Larcenia Walton y Maxine Sullivan, representando al Congresista Elliot L. Engel.
Entre sus amenidades, el Centro de Envejecientes Gun Hill Neighborhood ofrece gimnasio, salón comedor, laboratorio de computadoras, galería de entretenimiento, un jardín y un salón de billar.
“Estoy tan feliz de que podamos ver este sueño hacerse realidad”, dijo una llorosa Evelyn Cintrón, directora del centro. “Estamos encantados de poder seguir ofreciendo la alta calidad de servicios que ha caracterizado nuestro trabajo por décadas”.
Explicó que actualmente hay 80 envejecientes inscritos en el centro, y espera que ese número aumente rápidamente.
“Vamos a darle la bienvenida a muchas más personas mayores en los próximos meses”, dijo ella. “Estamos realmente emocionados”.
Es un trabajo gratificante para los empleados, que está compuesto de cuatro individuos.
“Hemos estado trabajando de esta manera desde que abrimos”, dijo la coordinadora del programa, Alma Hagen. “Esperamos hacer este equipo más grande”.
Torres elogio al señalar que la apertura vino en un momento transcendental.
“Nosotros valoramos la lealtad de la comunidad todos estos años”, dijo el. “También estoy emocionado de anunciar que la celebración continuará durante todo el año. R.A.I.N. se está preparando para conmemorar, el 30 de octubre, 50 años de servicios.
“Y aun hay mucho más que añadir a lista de eventos significantes: nuestra fundadora Beatrice Castiglia-Catullo pronto cumplirá 98 años de edad”, añadió.
El anuncio atrajo prolongados aplausos de los invitados, particularmente cuando Castiglia-Catullo se levantó para hablar.
“Las palabras no pueden expresar cuan maravilloso es el estar aquí en este nuevo edificio y ver tantos rostros familiares aquí celebrando con nosotros. Ha sido un largo, pero gratificante viaje”, dijo ella. Castiglia-Catullo fundó R.A.I.N. en el 1964 como un esfuerzo caritativo para ofrecer cuidado en el hogar a personas mayores a las que daban de alta en hospitales y no tienen a nadie en su hogar que los cuidara. Ella experimentó personalmente las dificultades de cuidar una persona mayor confinada sin ninguna asistencia, y trató de responder a esa necesidad.
También presente se encontraba el Concejal de la ciudad de Nueva York Andy King, quien señaló sus propios esfuerzos para asistir a los residentes mayores, incluyendo exenciones en el aumento de renta.
“Quiero decirle a todos los envejecientes de la comunidad que tienen mi compromiso, tienen mi palabra”, dijo el. “Es mi misión garantizar que ustedes reciban los servicios que se merecen para una mejor calidad de vida”.
