This YEP had plenty of pep. More than 1,000 schoolchildren attended the annual “Reading Is Cool Back to School” rally, hosted by City Councilmember Andy King and the Bronx Youth Empowerment (YEP) Program on September 16. King invited all the Pre-K, elementary, middle school and high school students in his district to attend the event, held at the Evander Childs Campus Football Field on East Gun Hill Road. The goal was to welcome students back to school and encourage them to have fun as they learn, explained King. “This is one of my favorite signature events to host every year,” he said. “The children are excited and eager to learn and they enjoy mixing with other students in neighboring schools.” Author Teri Woods read the students a portion of her new children’s book, The Best I Can Be. “Reading is not just cool, it’s a journey,” remarked Woods. “When you find a really good book it will open up a world of opportunity. Embrace the journey.” The event was also attended by Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña, Department of Education District 11 Superintendent Meisha Ross-Porter, New York Public Library President and Chief Executive Officer Tony Marx and Queens Library President Dennis Walcott, as well as Jamaal Bailey, Community Relations Director for State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, and Phyllis Chanez Francis, a gold medal winner in track at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil. Prior to the book reading, Francis was presented with a 12th Council District “Real Champion” Award by Councilmember King. Also on hand to greet the youngsters and distribute books were Shaniqua Tompkins and Liza Morales of the podcast Queens of Queens and “Doctor” Bob Lee of WBLS Radio. The Bronx Youth Empowerment Program, a civic engagement community service program for youth between the ages of 13 to 21, and King’s office partnered with the High School of Contemporary Arts at Evander Childs High School Campus, the New York Public Library, the Bronx Chamber of Commerce, JCPenney and First Read to conduct this year’s rally.
