Savor the swirl

The fireworks don’t have to fade.
Though the Independence Day celebrations have concluded, there is a new reason to raise a glass.
Celebrated each year on July 14th, Bastille Day commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution and the storming in 1789 of the medieval fortress and prison in Paris named the Bastille.
A national holiday in France, Bastille Day is also marked throughout New York with numerous events, including a fair on 60th Street and French Restaurant Week. Even the Empire State Building has been lit up in the colors of France’s national flag in past years.
While July 4th celebrations and barbeques in the United States are typically focused on beer or other spirits, Bastille Day is traditionally toasted with one of France’s greatest gifts to the world — wine.
Rohan Duggal, owner of Columbia Wine Company in Washington Heights, recently offered a few recommendations to make this week (and perhaps, month) one in which to savor the swirl.
Muscadet L’Inattendu (2014): “This white wine is great for this time of year. It’s got a little bit of effervescence and is really refreshing.”
Château Famaey Malbec Rose (2014): “A dry white wine, it has a bit of a candy finish to it, but isn’t overly sweet at all. It really goes well with pasta dishes.”
Mâcon-Villages Reine Pedauque (2012): “A Chardonnay from Burgundy, France, this white wine boasts an oakiness with a crisp and clean finish. It should satisfy those who don’t typically drink Chardonnay, allowing them to enjoy a bottle with their Chardonnay-drinking friends.”

Aunque las celebraciones del Día de la Independencia han concluido, hay una nueva razón para levantar una copa.
Celebrado cada año el 14 de julio, el Día de la Bastilla conmemora el comienzo de la Revolución Francesa y la toma en 1789 de la fortaleza medieval y la prisión en París llamada la Bastilla.
Un día de fiesta nacional en Francia, el Día de la Bastilla también es celebrado en Nueva York con numerosos eventos, incluyendo una feria en la calle 60 y la Semana de Restaurantes Franceses. Incluso el Empire State ha sido iluminado con los colores de la bandera nacional de Francia durante los últimos años.
Aunque las celebraciones del 4 de julio y las parrilladas en los Estados Unidos se centran típicamente en cerveza u otras bebidas alcohólicas, en el Día de la Bastilla tradicionalmente se brinda con uno de mayores regalos de Francia al mundo: el vino.
