All aboard. The city’s planned ferry service from Soundview in the Bronx is on target for a late-summer launch, officials said. Representatives of the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC), along with elected officials, made the announcement at Clason Point Park on April 9, after viewing the construction of the ferry pier. The Soundview route, the latest installment in the city’s NYC Ferry service launched in 2017, will transport riders between the South Bronx and three Manhattan terminals: East 90th Street, East 34th Street and Wall Street/Pier 11. Riders will get the benefit of a 20-minute ride to East 90th Street, while the trip to Wall Street will take slightly over 50 minutes. Currently, there are NYC Ferry routes serving The Rockaways, Astoria, South Brooklyn and the East River. Another route connecting the lower East Side with Long Island City is also slated to debut this summer. James Patchett, President of EDC, said the agency was committed to helping create a more equitable city. “I can think of few things that make the city fairer than better and faster transit,” he remarked. Alicia Glen, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development, noted that the last time the South Bronx had ferry service was 1939. “We’re talking about almost 80 years since people of the Bronx have been connected to other parts of the city through the waterways,” said Glen. The ferry fare is $2.75 a ride, the same as a subway or bus trip, with free transfers available across the NYC Ferry system. Passengers can purchase fares via a smartphone app or paper tickets at the ferry landing. Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr. said the new ferry route has been “a long time in the making,” and he expected it to “uplift” the Soundview area. “We’ve seen these routes open up all throughout the city, and it is important that the Bronx is a part of that conversation, and we’re excited about it,” Díaz remarked. He also said he hoped that the service would bring new visitors to the borough. “It is my hope that this new transit option will not only ease commutes for [our] residents, but will provide travelers with a new way to visit and explore the Bronx,” he said. “I look forward to bringing this service to other Bronx communities in the future.” “This is a game-changer for the people of the Bronx,” said State Assemblymember Marcos Crespo. “Hopefully this takes off, people utilize it in big numbers, and we can expand this service to other points of the borough.” Patchett said that ferry service was a durable means of transportation that could come back online almost immediately after a storm. “It’s reliable transportation that you can count on to get where you need to go, even when other forms of transit are not running,” he remarked. Patchett said that the EDC is working with the MTA to align local bus service to meet ferry schedule. Local resident Lynette Taylor said the ferry service was long overdue, noting that the nearest subway to Manhattan is the 6 train, which is about a 20-minute bus ride from Clason Point. She said it can take two hours to commute to lower Manhattan by bus and subway. “This is needed,” she said. A member of Community Board 9, Taylor acknowledged that some residents are concerned about an increase in cars coming into the neighborhood for people taking the ferry, as well as parking issues. The Clason Point ferry is expected to serve about 400,000 riders annually. NYC Ferry had surpassed initial projections in its first year, serving nearly 3 million riders, about 800,000 more than anticipated, the EDC said. In response to the high demand, NYC Ferry announced construction of six higher-capacity boats, outfitted with larger engines and designed to hold up to 349 passengers per vessel. More than 250 people have been employed by NYC Ferry since launching in 2017, with 75 new jobs currently available, including deckhands, captains, ticket agents and customer service personnel. Elbin Mena, an avid cyclist and Clason Point resident, said he is looking forward to taking his bike on the Soundview ferry and bringing it out to the Rockaways to ride by the ocean. “This is one of the best things that’s happened to this neighborhood,” Mena said. “Now someone can take me out for a ride on the water.” For more information or to apply for a job with NYC Ferry, please visit ferry.nyc.
