He was a “Monsta.”

Friends and family called retired New York Police Department (NYPD) Officer Manny Vargas “Monsta,” who last served with the 49^th Precinct on Eastchester Road, because of his outsized stature and strength.

A 24-year veteran of the NYPD, Vargas died from complications of a 9/11-related brain cancer at Calvary Hospital on Nov. 1^st.  During his Nov. 9^th funeral, members of New York’s Finest and Bravest lined St. Nicholas Avenue to say goodbye to the fallen hero.

Vargas was a highly decorated officer. During his years of service, he received many commendations for outstanding community service and dedication. The 49^th Precinct chose him as “Cop of the Year” in May of 2017.

Fellow officers stood by him throughout the illness. In early September, members of the precinct stopped by his bedside to conduct one last roll call. They held benefits for his family and visited him wearing shirts emblazoned with the words TEAM MONSTA.

Vargas held a positive outlook as he battled the rare form of brain cancer. Comedian Jon Stewart, an ardent activist of health care for 9/11 responders, even paid a hospital visit. Vargas was also presented with a portrait by forensic sketch artist Jonny Castro of him with his Cop of the Year Award.

On the day of his passing, Deputy Inspector Thomas Alps, the precinct’s Commanding Officer, tweeted, “With a heavy heart it pains me to announce the passing of our brother in blue OFFICER MANNY VARGAS. You will always be in our heart. We will never forget ALL you have done for the Community and the #NYPD #NeverForget #RIP.”

Era un “Monsta”.

Amigos y familiares llamaron a Manny Vargas “Monsta”, oficial retirado del Departamento de Policía de Nueva York (NYPD, por sus siglas en inglés), debido a su enorme estatura y fortaleza.

Él se desempeñó por última vez en el Distrito 49 en Eastchester Road.

Vargas, veterano del NYPD por 24 años, murió a causa de complicaciones de un cáncer cerebral relacionado con el 11 de septiembre en el Hospital Calvary el 1 de noviembre. Durante su funeral del 9 de noviembre, miembros de los Mejores de Nueva York se alinearon en la avenida St. Nicholas para despedirse del héroe caído.

Vargas fue un oficial altamente condecorado. Durante sus años de servicio, recibió muchos reconocimientos por su excelente servicio comunitario y dedicación. La Comisaría 49 lo eligió como “Policía del año” en mayo de 2017.

Compañeros oficiales estuvieron a su lado durante toda la enfermedad. A principios de septiembre, miembros de la comisaría estuvieron junto a su cama para realizar un último pase de lista. Tuvieron beneficios para su familia y lo visitaron vistiendo camisas adornadas con las palabras EQUIPO MONSTA.

Vargas mantuvo una actitud positiva mientras luchaba contra la rara forma de cáncer cerebral. El comediante Jon Stewart, un apasionado activista del cuidado de la salud para los socorristas que respondieron el 11 de septiembre, incluso realizó una visita al hospital. A Vargas también se le presentó un retrato del dibujante forense Jonny Castro con su Premio Policía del Año.

El día de su fallecimiento, el inspector adjunto Thomas Alps, oficial al mando de la comisaría, tuiteó: “Con gran pesar, me duele anunciar el fallecimiento de nuestro hermano azul el OFICIAL MANNY VARGAS. Siempre estarás en nuestro corazón. Nunca olvidaremos TODO lo que has hecho por la Comunidad y el #NYPD #NeverForget #RIP”.
