In launching the new independent non-profit organization My Brother’s Keeper Alliance this past Mon., May 4th, President Barack Obama made it personal – and brought it to the Bronx.
At Lehman College, the borough’s senior college of The City University of New York (CUNY), the President hosted a roundtable with local students, announced the formation of the Alliance’s new board and outlined specific goals to help improve outcomes for minority youth.
The Alliance, which seeks to redress opportunity gaps for young men of color, grew out of a task force formed following the death of Trayvon Martin.
“We believe in the idea that no matter who you are, no matter what you look like, no matter where you came from, no matter what your circumstances were, if you work hard, if you take responsibility, then America is a place where you can make something of your lives,” said the President, who reflected on how his personal journey included growing up without a father and often feeling adrift.

En Lehman College, el colegio superior del condado de la City University de Nueva York (CUNY), el presidente organizó una mesa redonda con estudiantes locales, anunciando la formación de la nueva junta directiva de la Alianza y delineó los objetivos específicos para ayudar a mejorar los resultados para los jóvenes de minorías.
La Alianza, que busca corregir las brechas de oportunidades para los hombres jóvenes de color, surgió de un grupo de trabajo formado a raíz de la muerte de Trayvon Martin.
“Creemos en la idea de que no importa quién seas, cómo te ves, de dónde vienes, ni cuáles eran las circunstancias, si trabajas duro, si tomas la responsabilidad, entonces Estados Unidos es un lugar donde puedes hacer algo de tu vida”, dijo el presidente, quien reflexionó sobre cómo su viaje personal incluyó crecer sin un padre y, a menudo, sentirse a la deriva.
