More than just snowballs were being thrown in the South Bronx this weekend.

This past Sat., Jan. 4th, the Monroe Mustangs women’s basketball team ran a basketball clinic for a group of young Bronxites at the C-BALL Community Board Athletic Scholarship League.

After a morning of practice, the entire team, led by Head Coach James Robinson Jr. and Assistant Samera Marsh, taught thirty-five Bronx youngsters of all ages on basic defense, dribbling, and other basketball skills.

“This was fun to do for a lot of reasons,” said Robinson, who facilitated the student-athlete sessions where they demonstrated some of the same techniques they use in their own workouts. “All of us essentially have come up through the community center system,” he said, “so we are quite familiar with the youngsters there and what their aspirations – and challenges – are. Also as top-notch collegiate athletes, I know our players felt pretty good about being role models for these youngsters.”

Following the clinic, the C-BALL program offered a girls’ game for local players and a men’s game featuring Bronx elected officials. There was also a nutrition and fitness guidance program offered to the young participants.
