The Bronx is known for its baseball. This past Sat., May 12th, the Five Borough NYC Play Ball tour made the borough of the Yankees the second stop of its season. About 400 participants descended upon Harris Park for the Major League Baseball-sponsored event, which was held prior to the opening game of the Grand Slam Baseball Little League. The event featured baseball- and softball-centered activities designed to stimulate interest in the sports and highlight the many ways the games can be played. “Our main focus is get out and play, just have a good time,” said MLB Senior Coordinator for Baseball Development Kindu Jones. Former Yankees pitcher Josè Veras was a special guest. Kids rotated between several stations — Bat & Ball, Grounders & Pop Ups, Agilities, Home Run Derby and Base Running. Each participant received an MLB Play Ball-branded bat and ball set, t-shirts and wristbands to take home. “This is something really great for the kids, something that helps them to be [entertained], take them out of the street,” said Grand Slam CEO and founder Belkis Lora. Since 2015, MLB and its partners have hosted hundreds of Play Ball events throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. The Five Borough NYC Play Ball tour is designed to capture the spirit of New York City’s love of the game and reintroduce the many casual forms of baseball/softball, including stickball and wiffle ball, that have been popular in the city for decades. Several Play Ball events are planned for the five boroughs throughout 2018. “We didn’t have things like this growing up,” Jones said. “To be able to bring it to the city, New York in general, it’s huge. These kids need to see events like this. They need to be a part of events like this. I think communities need to be a part of events like this. Ultimately, it brings communities together.”
