Pioneer League: Doing the right thing

This Sat., Apr. 6th, there will be football game held at Macombs Dam Park.
Unlike other meet-ups, however, this game, hosted by The Pioneer League, will carry a special significance.
As part of the league’s annual Spring Classic tournament, the Bronx Colts will face off against the Bronx Buccaneers, but this time they will honor their former teammate whose life was taken in 2011.
Isayah Muller, 19, was stabbed after a dispute involving his father and parking attendants turned physical.
He passed away just hours after graduating from Harry S. Truman High School. Muller was set to attend and play football at Nassau Community College in Garden City, Long Island the following fall semester.
Other Truman graduates and teammates will take part in Saturday’s football game in celebration of Muller’s life.
David Patterson, founder and commissioner of the Pioneer League said Muller was a very promising athlete.
“It’s a celebration of his life. It’s just about being out and playing football and recognizing that our youth are doing something positive,” Patterson said.
Patterson, 32, developed The Pioneer League to organize already established teams and create opportunities for youth, age 7 to 21, to have football in areas that lacked sports programs.
The league now has seven teams and serves all five boroughs.
Five of the teams are participating in the Spring Classic tournament.
The New York Knights will play the Brooklyn Bobcats at 3:30 p.m. and the memorial game will be held afterwards, at 6:30 p.m.
Pioneer is also the only league in the tri-state area to have an 18-21 age division, which provides this age group with the opportunity to be discovered after they’ve graduated from high school and possibly play college football.
“In three years we’ve put more kids in college than any high school (football) program in the Bronx,” boasted Patterson.
Patterson’s father played high school and college football, and was later drafted to the NFL to play for the Washington Redskins. Patterson grew up in Princeton, NJ, and played high school football. The games were filled with hundreds of spectators, concessions stands, announcers, cheerleaders, and plenty of school spirit.
“That’s what high school football is supposed to be about,” he said.
In New York, he noted, if there are 20 to 30 people at a high school football game, that’s considered a lot.
The lack of support, funding, and even football programs at Bronx high schools makes it harder for athletes to persevere in the sport, argued Patterson. By giving them the opportunity to experience play in a league, he is hopeful that the League provides the experience of competitive sports and also keeps the young players out of trouble.
“We work very hard to give these kids a place to play quality football,” Patterson said.
The Pioneer League hosted a 7-on-7-football tournament where more than 250 teens showed up to play.
Someone told Patterson he should have charged $10 and made $2,500 for the night.
“I said, ‘That’s cool,’ but I’m much better off figuring that 250 kids that could have been on the street or getting themselves arrested or doing something stupid are off the streets for a night. I’m good with that,” he said.
Patterson invited the Muller’s family to attend the memorial game. The event will celebrate the sport Muller loved and bring his teammates together to play in his honor.
“This game really means a lot to them,” he said.
It will also, hopes Patterson, keep Muller’s story alive and fresh in the minds of the youth who could possibly face similar situations.
“It gives these kids awareness of the fact that there are so many different times when you get involved in these issues, and they end up turning violent for no good reason,” noted Patterson. “In fact, just a simple walking away would be the thing to do.”

Liga Pioneer: haciendo lo correcto

Este sábado 6 de abril, se celebrará un partido de fútbol americano en el Parque de la represa Macombs.
A diferencia de otros encuentros, el organizado por la Liga Pioneer tendrá un significado especial.
Como parte del torneo anual Spring Classic, los Colts del Bronx se enfrentarán contra los Bucaneros del Bronx, pero esta vez van a honrar a su ex compañero de equipo, cuya vida fue tomada en 2011.
Isayah Muller, de 19 años, fue apuñalado luego de una disputa que se volvió física y que involucró a su padre y a asistentes de estacionamiento.
Murió pocas horas después de graduarse de la secundaria Harry S. Truman. Muller se preparaba para asistir y jugar al fútbol en el Nassau Community College en Garden City en Long Island, el siguiente semestre de otoño.
Otros graduados de Truman y compañeros de equipo participarán en el partido de fútbol del sábado para celebrar la vida de Muller.

Pioneer es también la única liga en el área tri-estatal que tiene una división de 18 a 21 años edad, que ofrece a este grupo la oportunidad de ser descubierto después de que se han graduado de la escuela secundaria y, posiblemente, jugar fútbol americano universitario.
“En tres años hemos puesto más niños en la universidad que cualquier otro programa escolar (de fútbol) en el Bronx”, se jactó Patterson.
El padre de Patterson jugó fútbol americano en secundaria y universidad, y más tarde fue reclutado por la NFL para jugar con los Pieles Rojas de Washington. Patterson creció en Princeton, Nueva Jersey, y jugó fútbol en la escuela secundaria. Los juegos estaban llenos de cientos de espectadores, mesas, locutores, animadores y mucho espíritu escolar.
“Eso es lo que el fútbol de secundaria se supone que debe ser”, dijo. En Nueva York, señaló, si hay 20 o 30 personas en un partido fútbol de secundaria, se considera mucho.
La falta de apoyo, financiamiento, e incluso los programas de fútbol en las escuelas secundarias del Bronx hace que sea más difícil para los atletas perseverar en el deporte, sostuvo Patterson. Al darles la oportunidad de experimentar el juego en una liga, él tiene la esperanza de que tengan la experiencia de deportes competitivos y también de que mantenga a los jugadores jóvenes fuera de problemas.
“Trabajamos muy duro para darle a estos chicos un lugar para jugar al fútbol de calidad”, dijo Patterson.
La Liga Pioneer organizó un torneo de fútbol 7-en-7, en el que más de 250 jóvenes se presentaron a jugar.

“Le dije: ‘Eso está bien, pero yo estoy mucho mejor pensando que 250 niños que podrían haber estado en la calle, siendo arrestados o haciendo algo estúpido, están fuera de las calles por una noche. Estoy bien con eso”, dijo.
Patterson invitó a la familia de Muller a asistir al partido conmemorativo. El evento celebrará el deporte amado por Muller y reunirá a sus compañeros de equipo para jugar en su honor.
“Este juego realmente significa mucho para ellos”, dijo.
Asimismo, espera Patterson, mantendrá viva y fresca la historia Muller en la mente de los jóvenes que, posiblemente, podrían enfrentarse a situaciones similares.
“Le da a estos niños la conciencia del hecho de que hay momentos muy diferentes cuando se involucran en estos asuntos, y acaban convirtiéndose en personas violentas sin ninguna razón”, señaló Patterson. “De hecho, algo tan sencillo como alejarse caminando sería lo mejor por hacer”.
