UCHC marks National Health Center Week

They heralded the grassroots – right on the green.
To celebrate National Health Center Week, Union Community Health Center (UCHC) hosted a health fair on August 8 near the Ben Abrams Playground on Bronx Park East.
The event brought together organizations such as Healthfirst, Catholic Charities, Part of the Solution (POTS), New York Psychotherapy and Counseling Center (NYPCC), and Bainbridge Adult Day Health Center.
The park event was part of the organization’s week-long celebration, which also included a presentation of $2,500 in funding from national healthcare provider United Healthcare to support its patient-centered programming on August 7th.
On Thursday, local residents could receive free health screenings from UCHC’s mobile medical unit, sample healthy food, and gather information on local health resources.
Members of the New York Fire Department were on hand to provide details on how families can create an emergency evacuation plan or acquire free smoke alarms, while handing out coloring books and fire hats to kids.
Oliver Spurgeon, Deputy Director of Federal Affairs for the National Association of Community Health Centers, which supports over 14,000 centers around the country, stopped by to emphasize the important work the centers do.
“Every single community health center around the country is doing some sort of celebration this week, honoring staff, the doctors, the nurses, the front line providers that make community centers the best they can be,” he said.
Spurgeon said that community-based medical centers “are breaking down barriers to care and making sure that people who wouldn’t have access to care otherwise are getting care.”
The event also provided UCHC an opportunity to recognize community partners.
Among them was Assemblymember Nathalia Fernández, who was recognized for her efforts to improve the well-being of local residents. Lois Mangione, a community activist and retired school teacher, was also presented with a citation for helping UCHC make inroads in the Bronx by connecting the center with elected officials, community members, and local schools.
“She knew that working together, we could bring more value to the community,” said Luz Elenia Correa, UCHC Vice President of Government and Community Affairs. “Lois has a lot of connections in the area and was instrumental in helping us grow.”
Also honored was Anthony Otten, NYPCC Community Outreach Specialist, which partnered with UCHC to support evacuees from Puerto Rico after Hurricane María.
“When we put out a call to form a coalition to help, NYPCC — and Anthony in particular — was one of the first to help,” Correa said. “The [evacuees] were newcomers to our neighborhood, they were desperate, they were homeless and they needed support.”
Otten said that NYPCC, which provides mental health services to children and families experiencing trauma, is trying to spread the word about its services.
“Often times, people don’t know that we exist,” he said. “We can be that helping hand for someone who needs support.”
Mangione remarked that she was flattered to receive recognition, and added that greater focus should be trained on activists for their efforts.
“They don’t always get recognized for what they do for their neighborhoods,” she said. “When it happens, it’s nice.”
Attendees said they found the event informative, and appreciated that local organizations were performing community outreach.
“It’s helpful to be able to get info in one place, and it’s great for families,” said 14-year-old Isaac Oren.
“Adults get info they need, and kids get free stuff, so everybody’s happy,” he remarked.
“It’s great to see these types of events in this neighborhood,” said local resident Dominick DiNapoli. “It shows you someone cares.”

UCHC celebra la Semana del Centro Nacional de Salud

Para celebrar la Semana del Centro Nacional de Salud, el Centro Comunitario de Salud Union (UCHC, por sus siglas en inglés) organizó una feria de salud el 8 de agosto cerca del parque infantil Ben Abrams en Bronx Park East.
El evento reunió a organizaciones como Healthfirst, Caridades Católicas, Parte de la Solución (POTS, por sus siglas en inglés), el Centro de Psicoterapia y Asesoramiento de Nueva York (NYPCC, por sus siglas en inglés) y el Centro Bainbridge Diurno de Salud para Adultos.
El evento del parque fue parte de la celebración de una semana de la organización, que también incluyó una presentación de $2,500 dólares en fondos del proveedor nacional de atención médica United Healthcare para apoyar su programación centrada en el paciente el 7 de agosto.
El jueves, los residentes locales podían recibir exámenes de salud gratuitos de la unidad médica móvil de UCHC, probar alimentos saludables y recopilar información sobre recursos de salud locales.
Miembros del Departamento de Bomberos de Nueva York estuvieron disponibles para proporcionar detalles a las familias sobre crear un plan de evacuación de emergencia o adquirir alarmas de humo gratuitas, mientras repartían libros para colorear y sombreros de bomberos para los niños.

Spurgeon dijo que los centros médicos comunitarios “están rompiendo las barreras de la atención médica y se aseguran de que las personas que de otra manera no tendrían acceso a ella, la estén recibiendo”.
El evento también proporcionó a UCHC la oportunidad de reconocer a los socios de la comunidad.
Entre ellos estuvo la asambleísta Nathalia Fernández, quien fue reconocida por sus esfuerzos para mejorar el bienestar de los residentes locales. Lois Mangione, activista de la comunidad y maestra de escuela jubilada, también recibió una distinción por ayudar a UCHC a incursionar en el Bronx, conectando al centro con funcionarios electos, miembros de la comunidad y escuelas locales.
“Ella sabía que trabajando juntos podríamos aportar más valor a la comunidad”, dijo Luz Elenia Correa, vicepresidenta de gobierno y asuntos comunitarios de UCHC. “Lois tiene muchas conexiones en el área y fue fundamental para ayudarnos a crecer”.
También fue homenajeado Anthony Otten, especialista en Participación Comunitaria del NYPCC, quien se asoció con UCHC para apoyar a los evacuados de Puerto Rico después del huracán María.
“Cuando hicimos un llamado para formar una coalición para ayudar, el NYPCC, y Anthony en particular, fueron uno de los primeros en apoyar”, dijo Correa. “Los [evacuados] recién habían llegado a nuestro vecindario, estaban desesperados, sin hogar y necesitaban apoyo”.
Otten dijo que el NYPCC, que brinda servicios de salud mental a niños y familias que sufren traumas, está tratando de correr la voz sobre sus servicios.
“Muchas veces, la gente no sabe que existimos”, dijo. “Podemos ser esa mano amiga para alguien que necesita apoyo”.
Mangione comentó que se sintió halagada por recibir el reconocimiento, y agregó que se debe dar mayor enfoque a los activistas por sus esfuerzos.
“No siempre son reconocidos por lo que hacen por sus vecindarios”, dijo. “Cuando sucede, es agradable”.
Los asistentes comentaron que encontraron el evento informativo y agradecieron que las organizaciones locales realicen actividades de divulgación comunitaria.
“Es útil poder obtener información en un solo lugar, y es genial para las familias”, dijo Isaac Oren, de 14 años.
“Los adultos obtienen la información que necesitan, y los niños obtienen cosas gratis, por lo que todos están felices”, comentó.
“Es genial ver este tipo de eventos en este vecindario”, señaló el residente local Dominick DiNapoli. “Te muestra que a alguien le importa”.
