Bronx Museum celebrates annual gala

It wasn’t exactly a Scandal – more a situation in need of a fix.
Growing up, actress and activist Kerry Washington was a curious child whose education included many excursions to cultural institutions – just not any local sites.
“Museums were a huge part of my upbringing,” explained Washington. “But I always had to go outside of my neighborhood to be enriched in this way.”
Now Washington is seeking to change that lack of access for other Bronx children.
She is one of the leading voices of support for the establishment of the Bronx Children’s Museum – a first for the borough of over 1.3 million residents.
The new state-of-the-art facility is slated to open in 2020. The new flagship facility is located near Yankee Stadium.
“I am truly humbled by the possibilities of what will come out of this beautiful museum,” said Washington. “By supporting the museum, you are not just supporting a building, you are supporting the inner self-worth of an entire borough of children.”
Washington joined with other advocates for the museum’s third annual benefit gala on Tues., May 7th. The night was dedicated to the children of the Bronx – past, present, and future, as exemplified by the Bronx-grown luminaries in attendance including honorees Rita Moreno and Shawn “Pecas” Costner, who were presented with 2019 Imagination Awards. Also in attendance were legal analyst Sunny Hostin, Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz, Jr.; actress and author Sonia Manzano; and Grammy-nominated musician Bobby Sanabria.
The benefit grossed nearly $500,000 for the site and the programming reaching over 18,000 children annually.
“It is important for all children to have a museum available to them for every reason in the world that you can think of – for creative reasons or reasons of curiosity,” said pioneer Moreno.
The Borough President introduced Roc Nation Executive and hip-hop community leader Shawn “Pecas” Costner and touted the virtues of perseverance.
“We know what happens when you give a Bronx girl or a Bronx boy an opportunity. It allows them to dream, to expand their imagination,” said Díaz. “Shawn Costner is a reminder, talent is abundant – but opportunities are not – yet with our Bronx DNA, they can go out there and conquer the world.”
Front and center was a dance performance by four second grade children in the Museum’s Dream Big After-School program, which prompted a standing ovation.
“It was an exciting evening full of warmth and spontaneity. We are so grateful to all our attendees for their tremendous show of support,” noted Hope Harley, President of the Board of Directors. “Through their generosity, the children of the Bronx will continue to have access to inspiring arts, culture and natural sciences programs.”

No fue exactamente un Scandal (Escándalo, en español), más una situación que necesita una solución.
Al crecer, la actriz y activista Kerry Washington fue una niña curiosa cuya educación incluyó muchas excursiones a instituciones culturales, pero no a sitios locales.
“Los museos fueron una gran parte de mi educación”, explicó Washington. “Pero siempre tuve que salir de mi vecindario para enriquecerme de esta manera”.
Ahora Washington está buscando cambiar esa falta de acceso para otros niños del Bronx.
Es una de las principales voces de apoyo para la creación del Museo Infantil del Bronx, una primicia para el distrito de más de 1.3 millones de residentes.
Las nuevas instalaciones con tecnología de punta están programadas para abrir en 2020. Las nuevas emblemáticas instalaciones están ubicadas cerca del Yankee Stadium.
“Me siento verdaderamente feliz por las posibilidades de lo que saldrá de este hermoso museo”, dijo Washington. “Al apoyar el museo, no solo apoyas un edificio, sino la autoestima central de todo un barrio de niños”.
Washington se unió a otros defensores en la tercera gala anual de beneficencia del museo el martes 7 de mayo. La noche estuvo dedicada a los niños del Bronx: pasado, presente y futuro, como lo ejemplifican las luminarias que crecieron en el Bronx, incluyendo los homenajeados Rita Moreno y Shawn “Pecas” Costner, quienes recibieron los Premios Imaginación 2019. También asistieron la analista legal Sunny Hostin, el presidente del condado de Bronx, Rubén Díaz, Jr.; la actriz y autora Sonia Manzano; y el músico nominado al Grammy Bobby Sanabria.
La gala benéfica recaudó casi $500,000 dólares para el sitio y la programación, que llegan a más de 18,000 niños anualmente.
“Es importante que todos los niños tengan un museo a su disposición por todas las razones del mundo que puedan imaginar, por razones creativas o por curiosidad”, dijo la pionera Moreno.
El presidente del condado presentó al ejecutivo de Roc Nation y líder de la comunidad del hip-hop, Shawn “Pecas” Costner y promocionó las virtudes de la perseverancia.
“Sabemos lo que sucede cuando le das una oportunidad a una chica o un chico del Bronx. Les permite soñar, expandir su imaginación”, dijo Díaz. “Shawn Costner es un recordatorio de que el talento es abundante, pero las oportunidades no, pero con nuestro ADN del Bronx, pueden salir y conquistar el mundo”.
Bajo la atención de todos hubo una presentación de danza de cuatro niños de segundo grado en el programa para después de clases Sueña en Grande del Museo, que provocó una ovación de pie.
“Fue una noche emocionante llena de calidez y espontaneidad. Estamos muy agradecidos con todos nuestros asistentes por su enorme muestra de apoyo”, señaló Hope Harley, presidenta de la Junta Directiva. “A través de su generosidad, los niños del Bronx continuarán teniendo acceso a programas inspiradores de artes, cultura y ciencias naturales”.
