On BASE, and ahead of the game

Last week about 120 Bronx students and parents got a look at the future.
Co-op City resident Evelyn Alejandro liked what she saw.
Her son Brandon is deciding which high school to enter in this fall.
She said the new Bronx Academy of Software Engineering (BASE) is high on his list.
“I think that it’s great,” she said. “This is the time; this is the world. It’s technology and it’s not going back, it’s going forward. And I’d like my son to be a part of that.”
BASE is officially opening this fall at the Grace Dodge Campus at 2474 Crotona Avenue, and recruiting its inaugural freshman class.
At an open house at Sunshine Bronx Business Incubator this past Thurs., Apr. 11th, Alejandro said she was excited about the school, which offers a tech-heavy curriculum including computer programming and software design.
Students will be able to gain real-world experience with internships at industry partners. Ben Grossman, BASE’s proposed principal, told students and parents that the school is different.
Instead of handing in papers, students will work on their own projects.
“And that is a huge shift in the way teaching and learning happens,” he said.
Students will come up with ideas for their own design and engineering projects.
They will build them, test them and ask their classmates for feedback. If there are problems, they might even have to start all over.
“But when you’ve got a product in your hand – or in your phone – that is your vision come to life, there’s nothing more powerful than that,” he said.
There is a lot of buzz about BASE.
As noted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who mentioned the school in his State of the City address, New York City has the fastest-growing technology sector in the country.
The school’s advisory board is heavy with tech sector notables, including Reshma Saujani, who founded Girls Who Code.
“I think it so critical to teach computer science in schools,” Saujani said, “and what BASE is doing is making sure that curriculum is integrated into every discipline.”
Technology has transformed New York’s economy and is imbued in every sector—from finance, fashion, media, education and government, said Lyel Resner, adjust professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business.
Resner is also on BASE’s advisory board.
“It’s really kind of infiltrating all of these other industries, so it’s increasingly important to have some kind of literacy in technology, engineering and design,” he said.
Sunshine Bronx’s community manager, Joseph Carrano, said he is also a big supporter of the school. He said he’d like to have students work with the incubator’s startups and build their own portfolios.
That would give students experience, contacts in the industry and a sense of whether they’d like to go to college for further study, get jobs in the tech sector or start their own business right out of high school.
Brandon said he’d looked at other career tech education, or CTE, high schools, including one dedicated to the historic preservation of buildings and another focused on emergency management.
“Most of the high schools I visited didn’t offer anything that I was really excited about,” he said.
He likes technology, he said, “And since there’s a school for that, that’s where I want to go.”

La semana pasada cerca de 120 estudiantes y padres de familia del Bronx le echaron una mirada al futuro.
A la residente de la cooperativa de la ciudad, Evelyn Alejandro, le gustó lo que vio. Su hijo Brandon está decidiendo a qué escuela secundaria entrará este otoño.
Ella dijo que la nueva Academia de Ingeniería de Software del Bronx (BASE por sus siglas en inglés) es una prioridad en su lista.
“Creo que es genial”, dijo. “Este es el momento, de lo que se trata el mundo. Es tecnología y no va a regresar, va a avanzar. Y me gustaría que mi hijo formara parte de eso”.
BASE oficialmente se abrirá este otoño en el Campus Grace Dodge, en el número 2474 de Avenida Crotona y está reclutando a su clase inaugural del primer año.
En una jornada de puertas abiertas en la Incubadora de Empresas Sunshine Bronx, Alejandro dijo que estaba entusiasmada con la escuela, la cual ofrece un plan de estudios técnico pesado, incluyendo programación de computadoras y diseño de software.
Los alumnos serán capaces de obtener experiencia del mundo real con internados con socios de la industria.
Ben Grossman, a quien han propuesto como el director para BASE, dijo a los estudiantes y padres que la escuela es diferente.
En lugar de entregar trabajos, los estudiantes trabajan en sus propios proyectos.
“Y eso es un gran cambio en la forma en que la enseñanza y el aprendizaje ocurren”, dijo.
Los estudiantes van a plantear ideas para su propio diseño y proyectos de ingeniería.
Ellos los van a construir, probar y les pedirán a sus compañeros de clase que les den sus opiniones. Si hay problemas, incluso podrían tener que empezar de nuevo.
“Pero cuando tienes un producto en tu mano -o en el teléfono-, es tu visión cobrando vida, no hay nada más poderoso que eso”, dijo.
Hay un montón de rumores acerca de BASE.
Como ha señalado el alcalde Michael Bloomberg, quien mencionó a la escuela en su discurso del estado de la Ciudad, la Ciudad de Nueva York tiene el sector tecnológico de más rápido crecimiento en el país.
El Consejo consultivo de la escuela es fuerte y cuenta con personas notables del sector tecnológico, incluyendo a Reshma Saujani, que fundó Girls Who Code.
“Creo que es muy importante el enseñar ciencias de la computación en las escuelas”, dijo Saujani, “y lo que BASE está haciendo es asegurarse de que en el curriculum estén integradas todas las disciplinas”.
La tecnología ha transformado la economía de Nueva York y está impregnada en todos los sectores desde las finanzas, la moda, los medios de comunicación, la educación y el gobierno, dijo Lyel Resner, profesor adjunto de la escuela de negocios Stern de la Universidad de Nueva York.
Resner también forma parte del consejo consultivo de BASE.
“Es muy amable el infiltrarse en todas estas otras industrias, por lo que es cada vez más importante contar con algún tipo de alfabetización en tecnología, ingeniería y diseño”, dijo.
Joseph Carrano, gerente comunitario de Sunshine Bronx, dijo que él también es un gran partidario de la escuela. Dijo que le gustaría que los estudiantes trabajaran con nuevas empresas que están siendo incubadas y construyeran sus propias portafolios.
Eso daría a los estudiantes experiencia, contactos en la industria y un sentido de si les gustaría ir a la universidad para seguir estudiando, conseguir trabajo en el sector tecnológico o iniciar su propio negocio al salir de la escuela secundaria.
Brandon dijo que había mirado otras opciones de carreras de educación tecnológica, o CTE, en escuelas secundarias, entre ellas una dedicada a la preservación de edificios históricos y otro centrado en la gestión de emergencias.
“La mayoría de las escuelas secundarias que visité no ofrecían nada que me entusiasmara demasiado”, dijo.
A él le gusta la tecnología, dijo, “Y ya que existe una escuela para eso, es a donde quiero ir.”
