No short memory allowed

Remember November.
That’s what members of the New York Campaign for immigration Reform want elected leaders throughout the nation to do as a bipartisan immigration reform bill hits the Senate floor that would offer earned citizenship to many of the 11 million immigrants who entered the United States illegally before 2012.
“Last November, Latino, Asian, and immigrant communities voted in record numbers. We have waited for seven months and are here today to say the time has come for Congress to deliver on immigration reform,” said Guillermo Chacon, member of the board of directors of the New York Immigrant Coalition (NYIC), and President of the Latino Commission on AIDS (LCOA).
So far, the coalition has drawn support from 200 organizations, including La Fuente; the Russian-Speaking Community Council of Manhattan and the Bronx; the MinKwon Center for Community Action; and the Arab American Association of New York; and Make the Road New York.
Chacon, together with Congressman José Serrano, fellow members of the NYIC, and New Yorkers for Real Immigration Reform, announced on the steps of City Hall on Wed., May 29th, that they would be putting pressure on elected officials to vote in favor of immigration reform.
Across the country, NYIC and other groups will be holding voter registration drives, town halls and meetings with members of Congress to push for them to support the bill. Supporters of the bill crafted by the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” senators guided it to passage in the Senate Judiciary Committee with a 15-3 vote, fighting off amendments that would have splintered apart its delicate coalition of labor and business groups, religious groups, and law enforcement and civil rights’ groups.
The next step is for the bill to be presented and debated on the full Senate floor, a process that will be managed by Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont.
While calling for pressure on reform, some present also expressed frustration with the bill in its present form.
“Unfortunately, we are not happy with all the reform,” said Chacon.
“Compromise is never comfortable for both parties. There is some good, some bad and some ugly things,” he said of the bill.
“The good thing is that [it will forge] a path for citizenship. The bad thing is the over-emphasis on border security,” he said, noting that a hefty sum of tax-payer money is spent at the U.S.-Mexico border.
It is estimated that between 2000 and 2010, U.S. taxpayers spent $90 billion on securing the U.S.-Mexico border, according to documents the government released to the Associated Press in 2011.
“The ugly parts are the amendments that are presented to try to deny any rights for immigrants to obtain citizenship.”
Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas has introduced these amendments, and voted against the Senate Immigration bill in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
In response, the NYIC organized a rally to protest Cruz when he visited New York that same afternoon for a fundraiser at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.
Still, some argued that these were beginning positive steps.
“What I see from the Senate I like, but it’s just a blueprint,” said Congressman Serrano.
Congressman José Serrano encouraged proponents of immigration reform to keep the pressure on and reach out to their own elected officials—and more.
“I always tell people to call those who aren’t supporting them. Republicans are the problem—and that’s a fact,” said Congressman Serrano.
The Senate is expected to begin debating the bill by June 10th.
Supporters, including Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, hope to pass it before the Fourth of July recess.

Exhortan que un proyecto de ley de reforma migratoria bipartidista llegue y pase en el Senado, lo cual permitiría obtener la ciudadanía a muchos de los 11 millones de inmigrantes que entraron ilegalmente a Estados Unidos antes del 2012.
“En noviembre pasado, las comunidades latinas, asiáticas y de inmigrantes votaron de forma histórica. Hemos esperado durante siete meses y estamos aquí hoy para decir que ha llegado el momento de que el Congreso de sus frutos a la reforma migratoria “, dijo Guillermo Chacón, miembro de la junta directiva de la Coalición de Inmigrantes de Nueva York (NYIC por sus siglas en inglés) y presidente de la comisión latina sobre el SIDA (LCOA por sus silgas en inglés).
Hasta el momento, la coalición ha recibido apoyo de 200 organizaciones, entre ellas La Fuente; el Consejo Comunitario de habla rusa de Manhattan y el Bronx; el Centro MinKwon de Acción Comunitaria; la Asociación Árabe Estadounidense de Nueva York y Make the Road Nueva York.
Chacón, junto con el congresista José Serrano, otros miembros de NYIC y los neoyorquinos por una reforma migratoria real, anunció en la escalinata del Ayuntamiento el miércoles 29 de mayo que estarán poniendo presión sobre los funcionarios electos para votar a favor de la reforma migratoria.
En todo el país, NYIC y otros grupos llevarán a cabo campañas de registro de votantes y reuniones con los miembros del Congreso para presionar y lograr que apoyen el proyecto de ley que debe aprobarse en el Senado.
El proyecto fue aprobado en el Comité Judicial del Senado con una votación de 15-3.
Los partidarios del proyecto de ley, elaborado por la bipartita “Banda de los ocho” senadores, guió a la aprobación en el Comité Judicial del Senado con una votación 15-3, luchando contra las enmiendas, que habrían fragmentado la delicada coalición de grupos sindicales, empresariales, religiosos, de aplicación de la ley y de derechos civiles.
El siguiente paso es que el proyecto de ley sea presentado y debatido en el Senado completo, un proceso que será gestionado por el senador Patrick Leahy, de Vermont.
Al pedir que se ponga presión sobre la reforma, algunos de los presentes también expresaron frustración con el proyecto de ley en su forma actual.
“Desafortunadamente, no estamos contentos con toda la reforma”, dijo Chacón.
“El compromiso no es cómodo para ninguna de las partes. Hay algunas buenas, algunas malas y algunas cosas feas”, dijo sobre el proyecto de ley.
“Lo bueno es que esto fortalecerá el camino para la ciudadanía. Lo malo es el exceso de énfasis en la seguridad fronteriza”, dijo, y señaló que una fuerte suma de dinero de los contribuyentes se gasta en la frontera México-Estados Unidos.
Se estima que entre 2000 y 2010, los contribuyentes estadounidenses gastaron $90 mil millones de dólares por la seguridad de la frontera México-Estados Unidos, de acuerdo con documentos que el gobierno liberó a la Associated Press en 2011.
“La parte más fea de esta pieza son las enmiendas que se presentan al tratar de negar los derechos de los inmigrantes para obtener la ciudadanía”.
El senador republicano Ted Cruz de Texas está introduciendo estas enmiendas y votó en contra del proyecto de inmigración del Senado en el Comité Judicial del Senado. En respuesta, el NYIC también organizó una manifestación para protestar contra Cruz cuando visitó Nueva York esa misma tarde para recaudar fondos en el Grand Hyatt Hotel.
Sin embargo, algunos argumentaron que éstas comenzaron avances positivos.
“Lo que veo en el Senado me gusta, pero es sólo un proyecto”, dijo el congresista Serrano.
El congresista Serrano alienta a los partidarios de la reforma migratoria a mantener la presión y a hablar con sus propios funcionarios electos y con muchas más personas.
“Siempre le digo a la gente que hable con los que no nos están apoyando. Los republicanos son el problema y eso es un hecho “, dijo el congresista Serrano.
Se espera que el Senado empiece a debatir el proyecto de ley antes del 10 de junio.
Los partidarios, entre ellos el senador Chuck Schumer, de Nueva York, esperan aprobarla antes del receso del cuatro de julio.
