Next for the nest
This stork has a lot at stake.
Low-income pregnant women in the Bronx are receiving much-needed prenatal care, services and resources as they help prep for their new arrivals.
Since June 2010, Union Community Health Center (UCHC) has been a partner in the Stork’s Nest Program, in collaboration with the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the March of Dimes.
It was then that a “nest” was opened at UCHC’s 260 East 188th Street location and has continued to serve hundreds of expectant mothers throughout the Bronx and lower Westchester.
The Stork’s Nest is an incentive-based, prenatal health promotion program for low-income pregnant women. It encourages women to make and keep prenatal care appointments and participate in prenatal education classes. Getting early and regular prenatal care and learning about healthy pregnancy choices are significant contributors to helping women have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies.
All sessions and classes held at UCHC are bilingual.
Participants earn incentive points by keeping prenatal care appointments, attending Stork’s Nest prenatal education sessions and taking part in other activities that promote healthy pregnancy behaviors. Some activities, like getting prenatal care, are worth more points as they are the most important in a woman’s pregnancy.
Participants use these incentive points to “buy” maternity and baby items, such as clothes, diapers, car seats from the “nest.”
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and UCHC welcome referrals of expectant mothers in the Bronx and lower Westchester for enrollment in the program.
On Sat., Nov. 7th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., all are welcome to Stork’s Nest “Baby Shower and Open House” event. It will be held in the board room of UCHC’s site at 260 East 188th Street location.

Esta cigüeña tiene mucho en juego.
Las mujeres embarazadas de bajos ingresos del Bronx están recibiendo servicios y recursos muy necesarios de cuidado prenatal mientras se preparan para sus nuevas llegadas.
Desde junio de 2010, el Centro de Salud Comunitaria Union (UCHC por sus siglas en inglés) ha sido socio del programa Stork’s Nest en colaboración con la hermandad Zeta Phi Beta, Inc. y la Fundación March of Dimes.
Fue entonces que un “nido” se abrió en la ubicación de UCHC del No. 260 de la calle 188 este, y ha atendido a cientos de mujeres embarazadas de todo el Bronx y el bajo Westchester.
Stork’s Nest es un programa de promoción de la salud prenatal basado en incentivos para las mujeres embarazadas de bajos ingresos. Se alienta a las mujeres a asistir a sus citas prenatales y a participar en clases de educación prenatal. Obtener atención temprana y regular y conocer las opciones de embarazo saludable contribuye considerablemente a que las mujeres tengan embarazos y bebés saludables.
Todas las sesiones y clases celebradas en UCHC son bilingües.
Las participantes ganan puntos por: cumplir con las citas cuidados prenatales, asistir a las sesiones de educación prenatal de Stork’s Nest y por participar en otras actividades que promueven comportamientos saludables durante el embarazo. Algunas actividades, como recibir cuidados prenatales, valen más puntos ya que son las más importantes en el embarazo.
Las participantes utilizan estos puntos para “comprar” artículos de maternidad y para el bebé en el “nido”, como ropa, pañales y asientos de coche.
La hermandad Zeta Phi Beta, Inc. y UCHC dan la bienvenida a referencias de futuras madres en el Bronx y el bajo Westchester para inscribirse en el programa.
El sábado 7 de noviembre, de 11 am a 2 pm, todos son bienvenidos al evento “Baby Shower y Casa Abierta” de Stork’s Nest. Se llevará a cabo en la sala de juntas del sitio de UCHC ubicado en el No. 260 de la calle 188 este.
