New support for LGBTQ community
LGBTQ residents of the Bronx now have available a support group and free legal clinic as a result of a partnership between Union Community Health Center (UCHC) and the BronxLGBTQCenter.
An LGBTQ Youth Group is meeting every Friday from 4 p.m-5 p.m. at Union Community Health Center, located at 260 East 188th Street in the Bronx. During these group sessions, topics are selected for discussion by the group, including bullying, healthy relationships, domestic violence, education and parent and teen communication. The Youth Group is a safe zone for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth and their straight allies aged 12-20. For more information, contact 718.618.8569.
“Union’s Teen Health Center has been a safe and welcoming place for Bronx youth for several years, and we are very excited to open our doors, share our experience, and extend our services to LGBTQ youth,” said Dr. Uri Belkind, Director of Adolescent Medicine at Union Community Health Center. “Here, LGBTQ youth will find a haven in which they can relate with other youth in an open and healthy environment, as well as take part in all the other activities and services that Union’s Teen Health Center offers. We look forward to helping all our youth build strong, healthy relationships with their peers.”
Additionally, every first and third Tuesday of the month from 6 p.m.-8 p.m., Union Community Health Center hosts the Bronx LGBTQ Legal Clinic. During these clinic sessions, volunteer lawyers offer consultations at no cost to the public. The attorneys provide general guidance on individual’s specific issues, make legal referrals and offer helpful legal resources. No appointment is necessary, although those interested are encouraged to arrive between 6pm-6:30pm to register. The LGBTQ Legal Clinic is the result of a partnership between The LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York (LeGaL), The Bronx LGBTQ Center and Union Community Health Center.
“We are very excited to launch a clinic in another borough, and once again bring LGBT legal assistance closer to people that need it,” said Matthew Skinner, Interim Executive Director of the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York.

It is our hope to be able to open a safe space this year and increase the level of support we can offer to our communities,” added Moises L. Cascante, President of the Bronx LGBTQ Center. “Working together with everyone, we know we can make that happen. We thank Union and LeGaL for their support and assistance and look forward to working with others to ensure the Bronx LGBTQ community receives the support and services it needs.”

Union Community Health Center is a non-profit Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alike that provides approximately 155,000 medical, dental and physical rehabilitation visits each year to approximately 28,000 individual patients at its four locations in the Bronx. ‘Union Community’ suporta el Centro LGBTQ del Bronx
Los residentes LGBTQ del Bronx ahora tienen disponible un grupo de apoyo y clínicas legales gratuitas como resultado de una asociación entre el Centro de Salud ‘Union Community’ (UCHC, por sus siglas en inglés) y el Centro Bronx LGBTQ.
Un grupo de jóvenes de LGBTQ se está reuniendo cada viernes de 4 p.m. a 5 p.m. en el Centro de Salud ‘Union Community’, en el 260 Este, Calle 188 en el Bronx. Durante las sesiones de este grupo, se seleccionan tópicos para discutir por el grupo, incluyendo intimidación, relaciones saludables, violencia domestica, educación y comunicación entre padre e hijos. El Grupo de Jóvenes es una zona segura para lesbianas, homosexuales, bisexuales, transgéneros y jóvenes cuestionables y sus aliados directos en las edades de 12 a 20. Durante estas clínicas, abogados voluntarios ofrecen consultas sin costo al público. Los abogados proporcionan orientación general sobre temas específicos del individuo, hacen referidos legales y ofrecen útiles recursos legales.
