New recognition awarded to Hospitals CFO

The strength training exercise – and reading – are two of the pastimes that help Barliss manager her responsibilities as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi|North Central Bronx.

Barlis has served at the HHC site for sixteen years and has been CFO for the last five years, managing Jacobi’s budget and finances during the Covid pandemic.

“We have to do what’s right for our patients while ensuring our long-term solvency,” said Barlis. “Our doors are open to help the next generation of New Yorkers.”

The executive was recently recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review, a leading medical industry trade publication, as one of the magazine’s “Women Hospital and Health System CFOs to Know.”

“The CFOs featured on this list ensure their organizations survive and thrive. These leaders bring their diverse experiences as women to their roles and expertise in healthcare finance,” wrote The Review.

Being a CFO involves balancing many competing interests, Barlis noted. Her role requires ensuring clinical needs are met through a sometimes-difficult budget structure. In her day-to-day functions, Barlis oversees utilization management, revenue cycle operations, budgeting, capital projects, grant management, data and analytics, and the new products and therapeutics committee.

“I’m thrilled to see Ellen being recognized for her outstanding contributions at the Jacobi and NCB campuses,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi|North Central Bronx CEO Christopher Mastromano in response. “The challenges a public safety net hospital like ours faced in the pandemic’s epicenter was extraordinary, and I credit Ellen and her team for helping to manage our budgetary obligations during this unprecedented time.”

Barlis said that overseeing the fiscal merger of NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi|North Central Bronx into one hospital was one of her greatest accomplishments. She also played integral roles in implementing a new cardiac catheterization program, primary stroke center, robotic surgery program, and PRIDE Health Center. She helped to boost the hospital’s quality and safety program, which resulted in an improved CMS Star Rating.

NYC Health + Hospitals is the largest municipal health care system in the nation, serving more than a million New Yorkers annually in more than 70 patient care locations across the city’s five boroughs.

El ejercicio de fortalecimiento -y la lectura- son dos de los pasatiempos que ayudan a Barlis a manejar sus responsabilidades como directora de Finanzas (CFO, por sus siglas en inglés) de NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi|North Central Bronx.

Barlis lleva dieciséis años trabajando en el centro HHC y los últimos cinco como directora financiera, administrando el presupuesto y las finanzas de Jacobi durante la pandemia de Covid.

“Tenemos que hacer lo correcto para nuestros pacientes y, al mismo tiempo, garantizar nuestra solvencia a largo plazo”, afirma Barlis. “Nuestras puertas están abiertas para ayudar a la próxima generación de neoyorquinos”.

La ejecutiva fue reconocida recientemente por Becker’s Hospital Review, que se encuentra entre las publicaciones líderes del sector médico, como una de las “directoras financieras de Hospitales y Sistemas de Salud que hay que conocer”.
