Marvin Cortez, 20, is a history-maker.
Cortez is one of eight male models to join America’s Next Top Model, in which models compete against one another to be crowned the next top model of the United States.
To date, the competition has featured only women, with model Tyra Banks as the show’s host, head judge and executive producer.
She broke barriers in an industry where people of color are barely represented. And now, Cortez, and the show, will break new barriers with the debuts of the show’s first co-ed competition since its inception in 2003.
The 20th cycle will feature eight males and eight females from around the country. Cortez is one of the 16 finalists in the show, and has spent months filming, bonding and competing with the other contestants.
He has seen other cycles of the show—and says there is a distinct difference now that there are Y-chromosomes involved.
“Now, there’s testosterone present and that created a balance,” he told the Bronx Free Press in a telephone interview.
But the male models got a little taste of what it’s like to be a woman.
One event during the competition had them literally walking in the other sex’s shoes at one point, and all had to wear garb and shoes usually designated for the other sex.
“The heels and the bra were uncomfortable,” he said, chuckling.
But apparently Cortez mastered the art of walking in heels in a matter of 20 minutes.
The 6’1 model keeps himself fit by playing soccer and working out—though he doesn’t necessarily follow a typical model’s diet of low-cal foodstuffs, favoring lasagna, spaghetti, meatballs, and anything from the city’s numerous Caridad Restaurants—which serve typical Latino fare, including Cortez’s favorite dish, chicken with rice.
“I’m sure when I’m 30 or 40, it’ll catch up, but right now I’m not paying for it.”
Cortez got to experience new kinds of cuisine during the competition.
Among the places he visited on the show were Hong Kong, Bali and Indonesia. Of those places, he enjoyed the cuisine in Indonesia the best.
“The dishes were very spicy—that’s when being Hispanic came in clutch.”
He also enjoyed the resort he got to stay at, which he described as extravagant.
“The ocean was right there. It was breathtaking.”
One of the more memorable shoots Cortez did was in an Indonesian rice paddy, where he got to ride a bicycle.
He said it reminded him of the movie Eat Pray Love with Julia Roberts.
“It was fun.”
For Cortez, travelling is one of the many advantages he enjoys of his chosen profession. Until he joined the show, the only other country he had visited was Honduras, where his family is from.
Talking face-to-face with Tyra Banks was also a plus—and he had a break-out moment in front of her.
“You come from the Bronx and you’d never thought you’d stand in front of these people, and they’re talking to you. It felt so good.”
Cortez did more than chat with Tyra: he was also her translator.
Apparently, the supermodel is keen on learning the language, and at one point addressed the contestants in Spanish.
Cortez, being the only native Spanish speaker, helped relay her thoughts.
“That was a milestone moment,” he said.
Cortez said it hadn’t entered his mind to do modeling until he had a growth spurt at 18, a spontaneous decision.
“When I see pictures of myself, I don’t think I look anything like what I see. I can’t believe I’ve pulled it off.”
There is more to modeling and doing a photo shoot than simply sitting pretty.
“There is a lot of production involved. It is like preparing for a movie. You’re a different person every time.”
Currently Cortez is residing in Los Angeles with his brother. He is pursuing modeling gigs, and taking acting classes.
The model said the show will reveal a side of himself he doesn’t always share with others. “The world is going to see what I’m about,” he explained. “In New York, you have to be tough. [But] I wasn’t going to put up a front during the show.”
He said his upbringing in the Bronx, where he lived with his mother, father and six brothers in a two-bedroom apartment near Yankee Stadium, conditioned him for the show.
“The Bronx [makes you] a man. I felt I was prepared.”

Marvin Cortez, de 20 años, hace historia.
Cortez es uno de ocho modelos masculinos que se integraron a lo que regularmente es una competencia femenina en America’s Next Top Model, en la cual las modelos compiten entre sí para ser la próxima mejor modelo de los Estados Unidos.
La modelo Tyra Banks es la anfitriona del show, juez principal y productora ejecutiva.
Ella rompió barreras en una industria donde la gente de color está apenas representada.
Y ahora, Cortez, y el show, derribarán nuevas barreras con el debut de la primera competencia mixta desde su comienzo en 2003.
El ciclo No.20 presentará a ocho varones y ocho hembras de todo el país.
Cortez es uno de 16 finalistas en el show, y ha pasado meses filmando, vinculándose y compitiendo con los demás concursantes.
El ha presenciado otros ciclos del show-y dice que existe ahora una distinta diferencia ahora que están involucrados los cromosomas- Y.
“Ahora, hay testosterona presente y eso ha creado un balance”, dijo el al Bronx Free Press durante una entrevista telefónica.
Pero los modelos masculinos pudieron experimentar que se siente al ser mujer. En un momento durante un evento, la competencia les puso literalmente a caminar en zapatos del sexo opuesto, y todos tuvieron que vestir atuendo y zapatos diseñados usualmente para el otro sexo.
“Los tacones y el brasier resultaron incómodos”, dijo el, con una risita.
Pero aparentemente, en cosa de 20 minutos, Cortez dominó el arte de caminar en tacones.
El modelo de 6’1 se mantiene en buena forma jugando fútbol y haciendo ejercicios-aunque no necesariamente está sujeto a una típica dieta de modelo de comida de bajas calorías, favoreciendo la lasaña, espaguettis, albóndigas, y cualquier cosa de los numerosos Restaurantes Caridad localizados por toda la ciudad-los cuales sirven comida típicamente latina, incluyendo el plato favorito de Cortez, arroz con pollo.
“Estoy seguro de que cuando tenga 30 0 40 años me ajustaré, pero por el momento no estoy en eso”.
Cortez logró experimentar todo tipo de cocina durante la competencia.
Entre los lugares que visitó en el show estan Hong Kong, Bali e Indonesia. De esos lugares, el disfrutó mejor la cocina de Indonesia.
“Los platos eran bien picantes-ahi fue cuando el ser hispano cayó bien”.
El disfrutó también del centro turístico donde le tocó alojarse, el cual el describe como extravagante.
“El océano estaba allí mismo. Fue impresionante”.
Una de las tomas más memorables que Cortez hizo fue en un arrozal indonesio, donde pudo montar en una bicicleta.
El dijo que le recordó de la película Eat Pray Love con Julia Roberts.
“Fue divertido”.
Para Cortez, viajar es una de las muchas ventajas que el disfruta de la profesión que escogió. Hasta que el se integró al show, el único país que había visitado era Honduras, de donde es oriundo.
Hablar frente-a-frente con Tyra Banks fue también algo superlativo-y el tuvo un momento de provecho frente a ella.
“Usted proviene del Bronx y usted nunca pensó que estaría frente a esta gente, y te están hablando a ti. Fue una buena sensación”.
Cortez hizo más que hablar con Tyra: fue tambien su traductor.
Aparentemente, a la súper modelo le entusiasma el idioma, y hubo un momento en que se dirigió a los concursantes en español.
Cortez, siendo el único que hablaba español, ayudó a trasmitir sus pensamientos. “Ese fue un momento memorable”, dijo el.
Cortez dijo que no le había pasado por la mente el modelaje hasta que tuvo un acelerado crecimiento a los 18 años, una decisión espontánea.
“Cuando miro las fotos mías, no pienso que me veo nada parecido a lo que estoy observando. No puedo creer lo que he logrado”.
El modelaje y hacer una sesión de fotos, involucran mucho más que sencillamente estar bien puesto.
“Hay mucha producción involucrada. Es como prepararse para una película. Cada vez, usted es una persona diferente”.
En la actualidad, Cortez reside con un hermano en Los Angeles. El está en búsqueda de oportunidades de modelaje, y tomar clases de actuación.
El modelo dice que el show revelará un aspecto de si que el no siempre comparte con otros.
“El mundo conocerá lo que soy”, explicó el. “En Nueva York, usted tiene que ser fuerte. [Pero] no iba a poner un frente durante el show”.
El dijo que su crianza en el Bronx, donde residía con su madre, padre y seis hermanos en un apartamento de dos habitaciones cercano el estadio de los Yankees, le condicionó para el show.
“El Bronx hace hombre a uno. Sentí que estaba preparado”.
