Mi Gente: Quit Barneys?

Mi Gente is a recurring column that allows our readers and neighbors to weigh in on the issues of the day, sharing the first-person perspective delivered directly from our street corners, bodegas, parks, schools and small businesses.
It seems that those looking forward to picking up pieces of Jay Z’s collaboration with Barneys for the holiday season, a clothing line called “A New York Holiday,” will still be able to shop the new line.
The rapper and mogul, whose real name is Shawn Carter, has come under fire for not more strongly denouncing – or severing ties with – the luxury retailer after reports have surfaced that its employees allegedly racially profiled black shoppers after they had purchased high-end items at the store.
A lawsuit has been filed by Trayvon Christian, a college student from Queens, who claims he was detained after buying a $350 designer belt at Barneys. Nursing student and mother Kayla Phillips said she had a similar experience after buying a $2,500 designer Celine bag from Barneys and was confronted by police officers directly afterward.
Barneys is not the only retail store under fire.
Actor Robert Brown, best known for his starring role opposite Sean Connery in the film Finding Forrester, has also filed a civil lawsuit against Macy’s for an incident in June in which he says he was detained by police for credit fraud after purchasing sunglasses at its flagship store on 34th Street.

In each instance, the customer said that police questioned his or her ability to afford the purchase and insinuated that fraud was being committed.
Civil rights advocate Rev. Al Sharpton has spoken of a possible boycott, while New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has launched a probe against the two stores.
But beyond the retailers, it is the artist Jay Z who has been the focus of criticism. He is set to debut a new design line at Barneys this winter, and part of the proceeds will go to the Jay Z’s Shawn Carter Foundation and socio-economically disadvantaged students. But fans and advocates have denounced Jay Z for not speaking out against Barneys immediately after these reports emerged, and for not canceling the launch. An online petition on Change.org urges Jay Z to cut ties with Barneys.
“I haven’t made any comments because I am waiting on facts and the outcome of a meeting between community leaders and Barneys. Why am I being demonized, denounced and thrown on the cover of a newspaper for not speaking immediately?” responded the rapper this past Sat., Oct. 26th.
Throughout the Bronx and Northern Manhattan there were a variety of opinions on the matter. Uptown residents spoke out this week about the controversy.
“Personally, as a half African-American woman, I feel like the people would rather him abandon his position,” said Jade Wilkins, who works at a pharmacy in the Bronx. “But as a businesswoman, I would rather him get his money and provide for his family, and I would like to see how he addresses the problem.”

Renee D., who was waiting for the subway at Yankee Stadium, felt that Jay Z should cut his ties, and said she had had personal experience with being profiled.
“I’ve been to Macy’s dressed in jeans, and they were following me the whole time. I asked them, ‘Can I help you?’ I have a job, and a credit card, and they had no reason to follow me,” said Renee. “I’ve never been back to 34th Street because of that. I think he needs to pull out.”
While authorities at both Macy’s and Barneys have stated that it was the police and not their employees who acted, Renee D. felt that the stores were equally responsible.
“They know what goes in there,” she said. “If they had nothing to do with it, they should have been intervening.”
Kelvin Dozier spoke outside an electronics store on 161st Street; he said he was incensed by the incidents.
“There are other stores that would be glad to have his business,” said Dozier, who encouraged Jay Z to get out. “Let someone else get a break. Jay Z doesn’t need them, and they don’t need him either.”
Anthony Hernández felt that Jay Z should learn more about the situation first.
“Everyone is innocent until proven guilty,” he opined. “You don’t know the circumstances of the arrests.”
Everett McCray, who was walking past the Bronx Courthouse on his way home, felt differently, and thought that Jay Z could make an important political statement.
“They’d learn to be more careful about how they treat people when they want to buy their products,” he said.

“I think he should work with Barneys to see how they can make it better,” added Ken French.
Still, even he was doubtful.
“I don’t think it’ll change the way Barneys does business. If he pulls out, there won’t be an incentive for them to change.”
Jesse Hunter likewise felt the artist should stick with the retailer.
“Jay Z is an entrepreneur. Everybody’s gotta make a buck, but it’s sad that business is being played out like it’s the sixties. But no, he shouldn’t pull out,” he said.
Natalie Thompson agreed.
“The collaboration is for his foundation and charity. Him not doing it, would take away from that,” she said. “If people expect him to drop out because of racial profiling, then everyone should take their stuff out (of Barneys and Macy’s).”
But Aaron Thompson (no relation to Natalie) said that it was for Jay Z’s own good that he make a move.
“If Barneys is in court, it may affect his brand. It’s going to (reflect) his moral character. You have to have good ethics in business,” he said.
It didn’t matter that the proceeds went to charity, said Thompson.
“That money’s no good,” he said.
Victor Vallegos, a Chilean immigrant, had an entirely different take. He had not heard of Jay Z or the lawsuits, but he had visited Macy’s as recently as Saturday.
“I was showing the city to a friend of mine who was visiting from Chile,” he said.
When the staff followed him, it was to ask how they could help him, he said.
“The attention is really good.”
The Online Petition
The online petition on Change.org was started by Derick Bowers, a Brooklyn-based father and entrepreneur, who calls on Jay Z, to sever all ties with Barneys following accusations of racial profiling that have sparked a national uproar against the store. Bowers writes, “We can no longer tolerate blatant prejudice and discrimination. It is clear that the minority buying power is devalued by some. We must withdraw support to those who will not support us. I’ve been a lifelong Jay Z fan. Barneys lacks any connection with the black and hip-hop community. And without his vast wealth and brand power, they would see him the same as they see Trayon Christian. Jay Z should be appalled by Barneys actions, and withdraw all support from them. If he does this, he will send a clear message to all corporations that are likeminded, that this behavior cannot be tolerated any longer.”

Parece que aquellos que deseen recoger piezas de la colaboración de Jay Z con Barneys para la temporada navideña, una línea de ropa llamada “A New York Holiday”, podrán comprar la nueva línea.
El rapero y magnate, cuyo verdadero nombre es Shawn Carter, ha sido objeto de críticas por no denunciar con más fuerza –o romper los lazos con- el minorista de lujo después de los informes que han surgido de que sus empleados presuntamente perfilaron racialmente a compradores negros después de haber adquirido artículos de alta calidad en la tienda.
Una demanda ha sido presentada por Trayvon Christian, un estudiante universitario de Queens, quien afirma que fue detenido después de comprar un cinturón de diseñador de $350 dólares en Barneys. La estudiante de enfermería y madre, Kayla Phillips, dijo que tuvo una experiencia similar después de comprar una bolsa de diseñador Celine de $2500 dólares en Barneys y se enfrentó a los agentes de policía directamente después.
Barneys no es la única tienda al por menor bajo la mira.
El actor Robert Brown, mejor conocido por su rol antagonista a Sean Connery en la película Finding Forrester, también ha presentado una demanda civil en contra de Macy’s por un incidente ocurrido en junio en el que dice que fue detenido por la policía por fraude de crédito después de comprar gafas de sol en su tienda insignia en la calle 34.
En cada caso, el cliente dijo que la policía cuestionó su capacidad para pagar la compra e insinuó que el fraude se había cometido.

El reverendo Al Sharpton, defensor de derechos civiles, ha hablado de un posible boicot, mientras que el Fiscal General del estado de Nueva York, Eric Schneiderman, ha puesto en marcha una investigación en contra de las dos tiendas.
Pero más allá de los comerciantes, es el artista Jay Z quien ha sido el objeto de críticas. Está programada para ser lanzada una nueva línea de diseño en Barneys este invierno y parte de la recaudación se destinará a la Fundación Carter Shawn de Jay Z y los estudiantes socio-económicamente desfavorecidos. Pero los aficionados y defensores denunciaron a Jay Z por no hablar en contra de Barneys inmediatamente después de que estos informes salieran a la luz, y por no cancelar el lanzamiento. Una petición en línea en Change.org exhorta a Jay Z a cortar lazos con Barneys.
“No he hecho ningún comentario porque estoy esperando los hechos y el resultado de una reunión entre los líderes de la comunidad y Barneys. ¿Por qué estoy siendo demonizado, denunciado y lanzado en la portada de un periódico por no hablar de inmediato?”, Respondió el rapero el pasado sábado 26 de octubre.
En todo el Bronx y el Norte de Manhattan hubo una gran variedad de opiniones sobre el asunto. Los residentes del norte del condado hablaron esta semana acerca de la controversia.
“En lo personal, como mujer medio afroamericana, siento que las personas prefieren que abandone su posición”, dijo Jade Wilkins, quien trabaja en una farmacia en el Bronx. “Pero como una mujer de negocios, prefiero que él consiga dinero y mantenga a su familia, y me gustaría ver cómo aborda el problema”.
Renee D., quien esperaba el metro en el Yankee Stadium, siente que Jay Z debe cortar sus lazos y dijo que había tenido una experiencia personal con ser discriminada.

“He estado en Macy’s vestida con pantalones vaqueros, y todo el tiempo me seguían. Les pregunté: “¿Puedo ayudarle?” Tengo un trabajo y una tarjeta de crédito, y no tenían ninguna razón para seguirme”, dijo Renee. “Nunca he estado de nuevo en la calle 34 por eso. Creo que él tiene que retirarse”.
Mientras que las autoridades, declararon tanto con Macy y Barneys, que se trataba de la policía y no de sus empleados los que actuaron, Renee D. consideró que las tiendas eran igualmente responsables.
“Ellos saben lo que pasa ahí dentro”, dijo. “Si ellos no tenían nada que ver con eso, deberían haber intervenido”.
Kelvin Dozier habló afuera de una tienda de electrónica en la calle 161, dijo que estaba indignado por los incidentes.
“Hay otras tiendas que estarían contentas de tener su negocio”, dijo Dozier, quien animó a Jay Z a salirse. “Que alguien consiga un descanso. Jay Z no los necesita, y ellos no lo necesitan tampoco”.
Anthony Hernández consideró que Jay Z debe aprender más sobre la situación en primer lugar.
“Todo el mundo es inocente hasta que se demuestre lo contrario”, opinó. “Usted no sabe las circunstancias de la detención”.
Everett McCray, que caminaba más allá del Juzgado del Bronx en su camino a casa, se siente diferente, y piensa que Jay Z podría hacer una importante declaración política.
“Ellos deben aprenden a ser más cuidadosos con la forma en que tratan a las personas que quieren comprar sus productos”, dijo.
“Creo que se debe trabajar con Barneys para ver cómo pueden hacerlo mejor”, agregó Ken French
Sin embargo, también dudaba.

“No creo que esto cambie la forma en Barneys opera. Si él se retira, no habrá un incentivo para que cambien”.
Jesse Hunter asimismo siente que el artista debe seguir con el minorista.
“Jay Z es un empresario. Todo el mundo tiene que hacer dinero, pero es triste que el negocio se esté jugando como en los años sesenta. Pero no, él no debería retirarse”, dijo.
Natalie Thompson estuvo de acuerdo.
“La colaboración es para su fundación y la caridad. El no hacerlo, lo alejaría de eso”, dijo. “Si la gente espera que él caiga a causa de la discriminación racial, entonces todo el mundo debería tener sus cosas afuera (de Barneys y Macy’s)”.
Pero Aaron Thompson (sin relación con Natalie), dijo que por el propio bien de Jay Z debía hacer un movimiento.
“Si Barneys está en la corte, puede afectar su marca. Va a reflejar su carácter moral. Tienes que tener una buena ética en los negocios”, dijo.
No importa que los ingresos vayan a la caridad, dijo Thompson.
“Ese dinero no es bueno”, dijo.
Víctor Vallegos, un inmigrante chileno, tuvo una opinión completamente diferente. No había oído hablar de Jay Z o las demandas, pero había visitado Macy’s tan reciente como el sábado.
“Yo estaba mostrándole la ciudad a un amigo mío que estaba de visita desde Chile”, dijo.
Cuando el personal lo siguió, fue para preguntarle cómo podían ayudarlo, dijo.
“La atención es muy buena”.
Petición en línea
La petición en línea en Change.org fue iniciada por Derick Bowers, un padre con sede en Brooklyn y empresario, que hace un llamado a Jay Z para cortar todos los lazos con Barneys tras las acusaciones de discriminación racial que han provocado un escándalo nacional contra la tienda. Bowers escribe: “Ya no podemos tolerar el evidente prejuicio y la discriminación. Es claro que el poder de compra de la minoría se devalúa por algunos. Debemos retirar el apoyo a aquellos que no nos va a apoyar. He sido un fan de toda la vida de Jay Z. Barneys carece de toda relación con la comunidad negra y del hip-hop. Y sin su inmensa riqueza y poder de marca, ellos lo verían igual que miraron a Trayon Christian. Jay Z debería estar horrorizado por las acciones de Barneys, y cancelar todo el apoyo que recibe de ellos. Si lo hace, va a enviar un mensaje claro a todas las empresas que son afines, que este comportamiento no se puede tolerar por más tiempo”.
