Let’s Celebrate

When I hear the names of Latino icons such as Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Carolina Herrera, Rita Moreno, Alfonso Cuarón, Carlos Santana or Gloria Estefan, the words that come to my mind are “talent”, “perseverance” and “legacy”.

And when someone talks to me about rice and beans, mole, mariachi or merengue, I realize all the colors, traditions, aromas and characteristics that make us distinctly Hispanic.

We are the largest ethnic group in the country and our influence in the culture of the United States touches the arts, sports, sciences, politics, and many other areas. Our community is comprised by more than 55 million people, that make up a rich cultural mosaic and who enrich the diversity of our great nation day-to-day.

Every day, Spanish language is more commonly spoken in U.S. households. Nowadays, there are more Spanish speakers in the United States than there are in Spain. We Latinos have grown not only in demographics, but also in strength.

The celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month is the best example of this.

This month of celebration is an opportunity to honor our origins and also highlight our achievements, and challenges that we face. We Latinos have our roots outside of the United States borders, in warmer climates, where sweeter fruit grows. Nevertheless, every year we plant the seeds of our culture in this country, and we harvest accomplishments that set the legacy of our identity.

AARP has always supported diversity in our society, and this month we pay tribute to the rich legacy of Latino culture and history in our nation. Cuando escucho los nombres de íconos latinos como Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Carolina Herrera, Rita Moreno, Alfonso Cuarón, Carlos Santana o Gloria Estefan, las palabras que me vienen a la mente son “talento”, “perseverancia” y “legado”. Y cuando alguien me habla de arroz con habichuelas, mole, mariachi o merengue, me doy cuenta de todos los colores, tradiciones, aromas y rasgos que nos caracterizan a los hispanos.

Somos el grupo étnico más grande del país y nuestra influencia en la cultura de los Estados Unidos abarca el arte, entretenimiento, deportes, ciencia, política y una infinidad de campos más. Nuestra comunidad está integrada por más de 55 millones de personas que componen un rico mosaico cultural y que día a día enriquecen la diversidad de nuestra gran nación.

Cada vez se habla más español en los hogares del país. ¡Hoy en día hay más hispanohablantes aquí, que en España! Los latinos hemos ido creciendo no sólo en números, sino también en fuerza; y la celebración del Mes de la Herencia Hispana es el mejor ejemplo de esto.

Este mes de fiesta es una oportunidad para honrar nuestros orígenes, pero también para resaltar los logros y los retos que enfrentamos. Los latinos tenemos nuestras raíces fuera de las fronteras estadounidenses, en tierras más cálidas, donde la fruta crece más dulce. Sin embargo, cada año sembramos las semillas de nuestra cultura en esta nación y cosechamos éxitos que llevan la huella de nuestra identidad.
