Lehman Community To ‘Take Back the Night’
Lehman College will host its annual “Take Back the Night” event on Wednesday, April 24, from 2-8 p.m.
Guest speakers include New York State Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj of the 80thDistrict in the Bronx; Bronx schoolteacher Lydia Cuomo, a rape survivor and advocate of the “Rape is Rape” Bill in New York State; and Andrew Willis, director of the Stop Abuse Campaign.
Cuomo recently made headline news when she stepped forward as the woman who had been raped at gunpoint by a NYPD police officer last year. The case went to trial and her attacker was found guilty of sexual assault, but not rape—in New York State, the definition of rape extends only to vaginal penetration. Cuomo is now urging lawmakers to change the way rape is defined in the books.
Business entrepreneur Andrew Willis was born in Hong Kong and went to school in Great Britain. He is a survivor of child sexual abuse and domestic violence, and has dedicated much of his life to ending abuse through his work with the Stop Abuse Campaign.
“Take Back the Night” aims to increase awareness on issues of sexual violence, abuse and harassment in communities.
To this end, the College will host a Community Resource Fair from 2-5 p.m. on the Campus Walkway.
The Fair will feature the Lehman College Clothesline Project and the Quilt Project created by students. Informational booths will also be available.
The program will continue in the Lovinger Theatre at 5 p.m. with a special performance of “Price of Silence,” a creative performing arts and theatrical movement designed to illuminate the global struggle for women’s rights. The evening will culminate with a candlelight vigil on the Campus Walkway and end with a speak-out session, where members of the audience will be encouraged to share their own survivor stories.
