Kids Are On Break—What To Do Now?

Kids are out of school for the holidays, and it might feel like a challenge to find activities beyond just gifts and food to keep them engaged. Here are some great activities and events in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx to help pass the time together.
On ice
The holiday season in the Bronx Zoo is always a great treat. This year, the zoo is cooling it out with a Salute to Wildlife Ice Carving Week, a series of wildlife-themed ice events, including an Ice Playground with an ice throne and even an igloo for kids to explore and experience life like the Inuits in Alaska. Glorious glass
After Christmas, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Cloisters will be inviting families to learn about the artistry of medieval stained glass. Children can learn how the colorful panels within the museum—and many churches—were made, and the history and stories behind them. Children will learn the narratives and symbolism that pertain to panels in the Cloisters. For more information, please visit www.metmuseum.org.
In society
It holds one of the most amazing collections in our city, but few have visited the Hispanic Society of America in Washington Heights. The museum is home to more than 800 paintings and 1,000 works of sculpture. There are jewelry, ceramics, furniture and other decorative arts, along with tons of resources for those interested in the history and culture of Spain, Portugal, and the colonies from the twelfth century to the present. The museum will be closed from December 23rd to December 26th, and then again from December 30th through January 1st. For more information, please visit www.hispanicsociety.org.
Library time
When in doubt, always take your kids to the library. There’s more to explore than the wonderful books. The Bronx Library Center, for example, will be holding Preschool Story Time and Teen Advisory Group for kids. Game Day—also held at the Kingsbridge Library—is a favorite for most kids. There’s even Teen Checkmate Chess at this location. Of course, there’s also the beauty of being surrounded by books. For more information, visit www.nypl.org.
Make waves
Wave Hill is giving the usual New Year’s resolutions a great kick with the Wave Hill-inspired Family Art Project—Create Your Year. What matters
Above all, just remember to enjoy the last few days of the year. Take time to recall what’s been great and momentous, think hard on that which has been less terrific, and remember to embrace each moment with love.

Los niños no irán a la escuela durante los días de fiesta, y podría sentirse como un reto el encontrar actividades más allá de sólo regalos y comida para mantenerlos ocupados. Aquí están algunas grandes actividades y eventos en el norte de Manhattan y el Bronx para ayudarles a pasar el tiempo juntos.
En hielo
La temporada navideña en el zoológico del Bronx es siempre un gran placer. Este año, el zoológico se está enfriando con una semana homenaje a la fauna que talla hielo, una serie de eventos con el tema de la vida silvestre en el hielo, como una zona de juegos infantiles con un trono de hielo y hasta un iglú para que los niños exploren y experimenten la vida como los inuits en Alaska. Vidrio glorioso
Después de Navidad, el Museo Metropolitano de Arte de Claustros estará invitando a las familias para aprender sobre el arte de los vitrales. Los niños pueden aprender sobre los paneles de colores dentro del museo -y muchos las iglesias- en que se hicieron, y las historias detrás de ellos. Posee una de las colecciones más impresionantes de nuestra ciudad, pero pocos han visitado la Sociedad Hispánica de América en Washington Heights. El museo es el hogar de más de 800 pinturas y 1,000 obras de escultura. Hay joyas, cerámicas, muebles y otras artes decorativas, además de toneladas de recursos para aquellos interesados en la historia y la cultura de España, Portugal, y las colonias desde el siglo XII hasta la actualidad. Tiempo de biblioteca
En caso de duda, siempre lleve a sus hijos a la biblioteca. Hay más para explorar que los libros maravillosos. El Bronx Library Center, por ejemplo, celebrará Historias para Preescolares y un Grupo Asesor adolescente para niños. El día de juegos, también celebrado en la Biblioteca Kingsbridge, es uno de los favoritos para la mayoría de los niños. Hay incluso Ajedrez Jaque mate adolescente en este lugar.
