Keeping it fresh

Lidia Gómez could not stop smiling.

The co-owner of Los Hermanos Grocery on Jackson Avenue, Gómez had just received a new refrigerator from City Harvest.

For 20 years, Lidia and her husband Ramón have run the corner grocery, but said they struggled to offer enough fresh fruit and vegetables to customers.

“Our old refrigerator was too small,” Gómez said. “We couldn’t carry many things. We sell watermelon a lot, but we had no room for it.”

The new refrigerator was purchased by City Harvest as part of the agency’s Healthy Neighborhoods program, which aims to improve access to fresh fruits and vegetables for residents in low-income neighborhoods, and provide them with nutrition education.

Gómez said the new refrigerator is about twice the size of its previous one. Now, Los Hermanos can offer more varieties of produce, including avocados, spinach and eggplant.

“I can put out little baskets to display fruit,” said Gómez, as she surveyed the rows of colorful produce in her store’s new refrigerator. “Everything is beautiful now, nice.”

On September 27, Los Hermanos unveiled its new fridge for the first time, which representatives from City Harvest celebrated with a ribbon-cutting.

“Many of the neighborhoods in which City Harvest works do not have options for affordable and healthy food,” said Rosanna Robbins, Director of Healthy Retail for City Harvest. “Through our Healthy Neighborhoods initiative, we work to ensure that all New Yorkers have equal access to nutritious food, and we support local businesses with tools to provide more healthy, affordable produce to their customers. We applaud Los Hermanos’ commitment to improving the health of their community.”

Volunteers from the nearby BronxWorks E. Roberts Moore Neighborhood Senior Center conducted a healthy cooking demonstration that day using ingredients available at the store, and community members received coupons to purchase discounted produce.

“It’s good for people around here to be able to get more fruits and vegetables,” said Gómez. “I’m so happy.”

“No podíamos llevar muchas cosas.

“Estoy tan feliz”.
