In light of reports that undocumented immigrants were again being targeted for removal by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, members of New York’s Congressional delegation joined to voice their opposition – and urged residents to exercise their rights.
Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez stressed that immigrants do not need to respond to ICE agents unless they present a judicial warrant.
“If you don’t see a warrant signed by a judge, don’t open the door,” she said.
Concerns have been heightened as reports have been renewed that raids would be conducted in New York and other cities across the United States.
While there was little reported ICE activity – and no confirmed arrests – in New York City this past weekend, Congressmembers stressed that immigrants need to be prepared.
In addition to Velázquez, among those present were Congressmembers Yvette D. Clarke; Gregory Meeks; Adriano Espaillat; and Hakeem Jeffries as well as State Attorney General Letitia James and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.
“I want to be sure that New Yorkers stay vigilant,” said Congresswoman Clarke. “We want to keep a readiness posture here in the city of New York.”
The raids were reported to target about 2,000 immigrants and include “collateral” deportations, in which agents will arrest migrants on the scene who are not on their target list.
“At any time, it could happen. We’re constantly on the watch and making sure that immigrants are educated and that they are fully aware of their rights,” said Espaillat.
Raids have been expected in New York City, Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, and San Francisco.
“As New York’s chief law enforcement officer, I will do everything in my power to ensure immigrants’ rights are protected as they face un-American ICE raids,” said James. “I will stand up against any threatened incursions on our state’s civil rights because, in America, we value our immigrants.”
“Very often, the administration says one thing and does the other, but a threat is a threat, and we need to take everyone seriously,” said Espaillat.
“These ICE raids are bad for New York City and bad for America,” said Clarke. “It puts our safety at risk when those in immigrant communities are fearful their every move is being surveilled.”
