I was raised in a movement, called to serve by the injustice of our health care system.
I’m running for Congress because fighting for our communities is the fight of my life.
My Bronx-born Mami put me to work in the feminist movement in Puerto Rico alongside Afro-Boricua, Lesbians, cis, working, and middle-class women all fighting together for equality. I came to understand that, as mujeres, justice and equality belonged to us too and that it would not be easily given by those who benefited from the patriarchy.
From early on, Mami taught me to fight.
As a doctor, Papi served his patients regardless of their ability to pay. I worked in his office over the summers and saw patients barter with him if they didn’t have money to pay for his services. Papi never turned them away. I saw service to others in action and realized that a healthcare system that bases its decisions on profits over people is a broken one.
I came to New York City to study and stayed, as many do, to find new opportunities. But, in navigating this big, diverse city, I also saw its scary underbelly. Prejudice, racism, inequality were right there in front of me. Activism led me to be mentored by former Young Lords like Richie Perez and organize and march against police brutality. I organized workers with 1199 SEIU for better working conditions and built a diaspora-based coalition to end the U.S. Navy’s bombing practices in Vieques, Puerto Rico.
As the first Latina elected to serve the 8th Council District and as the first Latinx Speaker, I advanced progressive policies that people said we’d never get done. Despite the doubt, we worked hard and we won. We pushed for innovative policies like city-wide criminal justice reforms; the clearing 10 years of warrants hanging on the backs of working people; and the first legal fund for unaccompanied minors to protect immigrant children. We effectively advocated for NYCHA residents by making NYCHA quality-of-life matters a priority in New York City and ear-marking tens of millions of dollars for repairs and upgrades.
During my 12 years in public service, I’ve fought for and served the people in the Bronx and East Harlem.
Every movement emerges out of some injustice. Most recently, the revolution that has rocked Puerto Rico is one that has been heard around the world and has made its message clear: the government must serve you and NOT corporations, hedge funds, and special interests.
That’s why I’m running for Congress, and I’m asking for your support.
I’m ready to fight and to serve the Bronx. I won’t be working for corporate interests or real estate developers. I’ll be listening to you, and I’ll be fighting alongside you against injustice, against a racist President, and against the status quo that leaves most of us behind.
I will be a people-driven candidate who will focus on being accessible to you and every corner of the district, from Mott Haven to University Heights. I will provide you fearless and competent representation. It will be my priority and my honor to make your voices and needs heard and to ensure that Congress is committed to addressing them.
I will fight for a better future for the Bronx, for you and for your families. I will fight for affordable access to quality healthcare by supporting Medicare for All. I will fight on behalf of public housing residents to ensure proper resources are allocated so that children and families are safe and are living in humane conditions. I will fight for economic stability by advocating to increase the federal minimum wage to no less than $15 an hour.
You deserve a representative whose sole priority is your well-being. You deserve a representative focused on ensuring that the same opportunities are available to you regardless of zip code, geography or income.
You deserve a representative who brings actions to words. I am committed to being that representative.
A better today and tomorrow is possible.

Fui criada en un movimiento, llamado a servir por la injusticia de nuestro sistema de atención médica.
Me postulo para el Congreso porque luchar por nuestras comunidades es la lucha de mi vida.
Mi mami, nacida en el Bronx, me puso a trabajar en el movimiento feminista en Puerto Rico junto a mujeres afro boricuas, lesbianas, cis, trabajadoras y de clase media, todas luchando juntas por la igualdad. Llegué a comprender que, como mujeres, la justicia y la igualdad también nos pertenecían, y que no sería fácil para quienes se benefician del patriarcado.
Desde el principio, mami me enseñó a pelear.
Como médico, papi atendía a sus pacientes independientemente de su capacidad de pago. Trabajaba en su oficina durante los veranos y vi pacientes hacer trueques con él si no tenían dinero para pagar sus servicios. Papi nunca los rechazó. Vi el servicio hacia otros en acción y me di cuenta de que un sistema de salud que basa sus decisiones en las ganancias sobre las personas, está roto.
Vine a la ciudad de Nueva York para estudiar y me quedé, como muchos lo hacen, para encontrar nuevas oportunidades. Pero, al navegar por esta ciudad grande y diversa, también vi su parte indefensa y aterradora. Los prejuicios, el racismo, la desigualdad, estaban justo ahí delante de mí. El activismo me llevó a ser orientada por ex Young Lords -como Richie Pérez- y a formar parte de organizaciones y marchar contra la brutalidad policial. Organicé a los trabajadores con 1199 SEIU para obtener mejores condiciones de trabajo y construí una coalición basada en la diáspora para poner fin a las prácticas de bombardeo de la Marina de los Estados Unidos en Vieques, Puerto Rico.
Como la primera latina electa para servir en el 8º Distrito del Consejo y como la primera latinx presidenta del Concejo, desarrollé políticas progresistas que la gente dijo que nunca lograríamos que fueran aprobadas. A pesar de la duda, trabajamos duro y ganamos. Impulsamos políticas innovadoras para toda la ciudad, como: las reformas de justicia penal; la cancelación de 10 años de órdenes de detención que colgaban de la espalda de los trabajadores; y el primer fondo legal para menores no acompañados para proteger a los niños inmigrantes. Defendimos de manera efectiva a los residentes de NYCHA haciendo de los asuntos de calidad de vida de NYCHA una prioridad en la ciudad de Nueva York y conseguimos decenas de millones de dólares para reparaciones y mejoras.
Durante mis 12 años en el servicio público he luchado y brindado servicio a las personas en el Bronx y East Harlem.
Todo movimiento surge de alguna injusticia. Más recientemente, la revolución que ha sacudido a Puerto Rico es una que se ha escuchado en todo el mundo y ha dejado claro su mensaje: el gobierno debe servirle a usted y NO a corporaciones, ni a fondos de cobertura ni a intereses especiales.
Por eso me postulo para el Congreso y pido su apoyo.
Estoy lista para pelear por, y servir al, Bronx. No trabajaré para intereses corporativos ni para desarrolladores inmobiliarios. Los estaré escuchando y lucharé junto a ustedes contra la injusticia, contra un presidente racista y contra el statu quo que nos olvida a la mayoría de nosotros.
Seré una candidata impulsada por las personas que se centrará en ser accesible para ustedes y todos los rincones del distrito, desde Mott Haven hasta University Heights. Les proporcionaré una representación valiente y competente. Será mi prioridad -y un honor- hacer oír sus voces y necesidades, y garantizar que el Congreso se comprometa a abordarlas.
Lucharé por un futuro mejor para el Bronx, para ustedes y para sus familias. Lucharé por un acceso asequible a una atención médica de calidad apoyando Medicare para Todos. Lucharé en nombre de los residentes de viviendas públicas para asegurar que se asignen los recursos adecuados para que los niños y las familias estén seguras y viviendo en condiciones humanas. Lucharé por la estabilidad económica defendiendo el aumento del salario mínimo federal a no menos de $15 dólares por hora.
Ustedes merecen un representante cuya única prioridad sea su bienestar. Ustedes merecen un representante centrado en garantizar que las mismas oportunidades estén disponibles para ustedes, independientemente del código postal, la geografía o los ingresos.
Ustedes merecen un representante que actúe y no solamente hable. Estoy comprometida a ser ese representante.
Un mejor hoy y mañana es posible.
