I Love the Bronx: Whitestone Memories

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.

“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.

A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.

Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.

“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”

Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”

Some weeks ago, my son and his friends wanted to venture further than the Parkchester theater to view a movie and asked if they could go to Whitestone Cinemax.

They were surprised when I responded that Whitestone Cinemax has been closed. It might surprise a number of other Bronxites, too.

But, over a year ago, the land was sold and plans for a mall have been put in place.

Now, Paragon Outlet Partners, a Baltimore-based company, has plans to build an outlet mall at the site.

The original movie theater showed films for over 30 years.

In 1949, the site served as a drive-in theater, and by 1983, the multiplex was expanded to include ten screens.

For over 30 years, it struggled with dwindling levels of attendance. The age of technology and the economic recession also contributed to the decline.

Many online movie services are far less expensive than going to the theater, and some find it far more convenient.

Plenty of Bronxites have memories at the Whitestone.

Growing up near Parkchester, we had three movie theaters, all fairly accessible.

However, in my teenage years, I’d still walk to Whitestone, crossing over Westchester Creek and entering the parking lot to catch up with friends.

At times, people would fly their remote controlled airplanes or race their toy cars by the back of the building.

It was where many high schoolers spent their first dates, and for some, it was the place where a first kiss was shared.

While not everyone is welcoming the new project, it will provide jobs.

Instead of planning for a first date, some teenagers may now soon be creating the memory of a first job at the Whitestone.

This is one of many changes to come in the Bronx, including the development of the Marriott Hotel, the Trump golf course and the planned Metro North stations.

There is no denying that we are riding the waves of development of a new Bronx. Our borough is certainly on the rise.

Paralegal por más de 17 años hasta diciembre del 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx.

Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.

“Quiero hacer a mis compañeros residentes concientes e informados de cuan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y como ofrecer una mano amiga a nuestro ambiente”.

De este nuevo tiempo en su vida, Martell dice, “nunca me he sentido más viva”.

Hace unas semanas, mi hijo y sus amigos quisieron aventurarse más allá del teatro Parkchester para ver una película y preguntaron si podían ir a Whitestone Cinemax.

Se sorprendieron cuando respondí que Whitestone Cinemax había cerrado. Puede sorprender a muchos otros residentes del Bronx también.

Sin embargo, hace más de un año, se vendieron los terrenos y los planes para un centro comercial se pusieron en marcha.

Ahora, Paragon Outlet Partners, una compañía con sede en Baltimore, tiene planes de construir un centro comercial en el lugar.

Creciendo cerca de Parkchester, teníamos tres salas de cine, todas bastante accesibles.

Sin embargo, en mi adolescencia, todavía caminaba a Whitestone, cruzando Westchester Creek y entraba al estacionamiento para encontrarme con amigos.

A veces, la gente volaba sus aviones a control remoto o competía con sus coches de juguete en la parte trasera del edificio.

Fue donde muchos estudiantes de secundaria tuvieron sus primeras citas y para algunos, fue el lugar donde se compartió un primer beso.

Aunque no todo el mundo está dando la bienvenida al nuevo proyecto, éste proporcionará puestos de trabajo.

En lugar de planear una primera cita, algunos adolescentes pueden ahora crear el recuerdo de un primer trabajo en el Whitestone.

Este es uno de los muchos cambios por venir en el Bronx, incluyendo el desarrollo del Hotel Marriott, las estaciones de Metro North planificadas y el campo de golf Trump.

No se puede negar que estamos montando las olas del desarrollo de un nuevo Bronx.

Nuestro condado está, sin duda, creciendo.
