As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown. “I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent. A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx. Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable. “I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.” Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.” Last year I had the honor of being keynote speaker at the Bronx Volunteer Coalition’s First Annual Volunteer of the Year Awards Ceremony. It was an amazing evening. All the nominees were presented with certificates, and winners in four specific categories received a plaque. Last year’s winners were: Kashawn Wright, who was recognized as a “Young Volunteers Leader”; Eileen Bonilla, who was honored for her “Neighborhood Impact”; Janny Olivera, who was singled out as a “Lifetime Volunteer” and the group Changing the Odds, which was celebrated for its “Organized Volunteer Impact”. Now, it’s time for this year’s stars to shine. The Bronx Volunteer Coalition is currently accepting nominations for this year’s awards celebration. You can nominate a wonderful volunteer in your midst; it’s easy. Just go online at www.bxvc.org/votya. Among the chief qualifications is ensuring that the nominee be a resident of the Bronx and do their volunteer work within the borough. Select the category of nomination and fill out the short form. The nominee will be notified and asked if he or she accepts the nomination. Nominees under 18 will need their parents’ or guardians’ permission. Once the nomination period is over, the online voting process begins. Last year over 6000 online votes were cast. On May 11, during Bronx Week, the Bronx Volunteer Coalition will host its Second Annual Bronx Volunteer Awards Ceremony, to be held at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. This year’s keynote speaker is Paula Gavin, Chief Service Officer at NYC Service. If you know a worthy Bronxite who fits one of the four categories, and meets the qualifications, get online and submit his or her name. The deadline is April 10. Don’t wait!

The night was filled with inspiring stories on volunteer work. Everyone had different experiences and different ways in which they gave back to the Bronx community – and each was equally passionate.
This is a great way to recognize a volunteer. Those who give freely of their time typically do not look for attention.
