I Love the Bronx: Very Virginia

I’ve spent the last week visiting family in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

It is always a joy to be back on the island, a very different scene than New York’s concrete jungle.
Green mountains, palm trees, clear blue water- what isn’t there to love?

Besides sightseeing and visiting family, my favorite thing to do is look through my mom’s personal collection of hundreds of photo albums. While not a professional photographer, she nonetheless documented the growth of each of us with pictures, and made certain to observe the changes taking place around us.

My teenage children also enjoy a few hearty laughs at our outfits and hair styles. Although my mom sought to keep us on the latest fashion trends, there were certainly a few outfits that deserved a chuckle or two.

Looking through pictures from the late 70’s to the early 80’s, I realized that the love and appreciation I have for parks, green spaces and rivers was instilled during my childhood.

I looked through countless pictures of all of us at the New York Botanical Garden, the Bronx Zoo, Orchard Beach and local Bronx parks. In some pictures I was so young, I could not recall being photographed, while others took me right back to specific moments in time.

These experiences had a huge personal impact in my life, and I realized why I love the Bronx so much, and why I give back the way I do. ‎

As I looked over the photos during this last visit, one taken in May 1975 caught my eye. I was 4 months old and my sister was 4 years old. My sister is sitting on a bench at Virginia Park, I’m in a stroller. Back then, the park benches were not their uniform green, but instead were painted red, yellow and green. As we reminisced, I shared with my folks that upon my return to the Bronx, I’d be hosting a service event at Virginia Park.

In 2011, I founded the organization G.I.V.E. (Getting Involved, Virginia Avenue Efforts). Our mission is to create a new culture of environmentally conscious resident in the Bronx through tree stewardship, park and river clean ups and art and cultural events. We work with volunteers of all ages, but I especially love working with youth.

On Sunday, November 22, between 12 – 4 p.m., we will be planting daffodils bulbs at Virginia Park and Hugh Grant Circle. Both sites are conveniently located by the IRT #6 Parkchester train station.

I encourage you all to come out and get your hands dirty with us, create memories and be inspired to do more.

And take photos- those memories will serve to inspire and amuse for years to come.

Pasé la última semana visitando a la familia en Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Siempre es un placer estar de vuelta en la isla; una escena muy diferente a la jungla de cemento de Nueva York.

Montañas verdes, palmeras, agua azul clara, ¿qué podría uno no amar ahí?

Además de hacer turismo y visitar a la familia, lo que más me gusta es mirar la colección personal de cientos de álbumes de fotos de mi mamá. Aunque no es una fotógrafa profesional, ella ha documentado el crecimiento de cada uno de nosotros con imágenes y se aseguró de documentar los cambios producidos a nuestro alrededor.

Mis hijos adolescentes también disfrutaron de muchas risas debido a nuestros estilos de vestir y de llevar el pelo. Aunque mi mamá trató de mantenernos en las últimas tendencias de la moda, ciertamente hubo algunos conjuntos que merecían una risa o dos.

Mirando a través de las fotografías de finales de los 70 y principios de los 80, me di cuenta de que el amor y el aprecio que tengo por los parques, espacios verdes y ríos, me fueron inculcados durante la infancia.

Vi innumerables fotos de todos nosotros en el Jardín Botánico de Nueva York, el Zoológico del Bronx, Orchard Beach y parques locales del Bronx. En algunas fotos yo era tan joven que no podía recordar haber sido fotografiada, mientras que otras me llevaron de vuelta a momentos específicos en el tiempo.

Estas experiencias tuvieron un enorme impacto personal en mi vida y me di cuenta de por qué amo tanto al Bronx y por qué le retribuyo como lo hago.

Mientras miraba las fotos durante esta última visita, una tomada en mayo de 1975 captó mi atención. Yo tenía 4 meses de edad y mi hermana 4. Ella estaba sentada en una banca en Virginia Park, yo estaba en una carriola. En aquel entonces, las bancas de los parques no vestían un uniforme color verde, estaban pintadas de rojo, amarillo y verde. Mientras recordábamos, compartí con mi familia que a mi regreso al Bronx sería anfitriona de un evento de servicio en Virginia Park.

En 2011 fundé la organización G.I.V.E. (Involucrarse, Esfuerzos de la Avenida Virginia, por sus siglas en inglés). Nuestra misión es crear en el Bronx una nueva cultura de residentes conscientes del medio ambiente a través de la administración de árboles, limpiezas de parques y ríos y eventos artísticos y culturales. Trabajamos con voluntarios de todas las edades, pero amamos especialmente trabajar con jóvenes.

El domingo 22 de noviembre entre las 12 y las 4 pm, estaremos plantando bulbos de narcisos en Virginia Park y Hugh Grant Circle. Ambos sitios están ubicados por la  estación de tren IRT # 6 Parkchester.

Los animo a salir y ensuciarse las manos con nosotros, crear recuerdos e inspirarse para hacer más.

Y tomar fotos, esos recuerdos les inspirarán y divertirán en los próximos años.
