Yo amo el Bronx: ‘Trees ‘R Us’

The initiative, named MillionTreesNYC and organized by the Parks Department and the New York Restoration Project (NYRP), was planted on Teller Avenue and East 165th Street. Two years before the anticipated deadline, the millionth tree has been planted in Joyce Kilmer Park, also in the Bronx. The ceremony was held on November 20th. Mayor Bill de Blasio, former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Bette Midler, Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito and NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver were present to plant tree No. 1,107,634, an American linden. Hundreds were present for the ceremony, including volunteers and students from PS35 Frank Siegel. “We are enormously grateful to the thousands of volunteers, sponsors, and partners who donated time, energy, and funding to make MillionTreesNYC so successful,” said Commissioner Silver. “MillionTreesNYC was an unprecedented initiative in NYC and has become a renowned greening model used internationally. It has led to a host of valuable research regarding greening efforts and has transformed acres of parkland and streets into new, ecologically healthy, multi-story forests that provide benefits to all New Yorkers.” And since the initiative completed ahead of schedule, additional funding was made available to allow for an extra 150,000 trees to be planted over the course of the next three years. Trees offer us beauty, and they also improve the air quality, slow down climate change, provide homes for wildlife and increase property values. MillionTreesNYC offers free workshops on how to properly maintain street trees and help provide needed tools. My children and I adopted our first street trees in 2011. We watered them with 30 gallons of water a week from May through October. We applied mulch twice a year, and planted daffodils bulbs in the tree beds. Every spring, we look forward to the signs of new plant life, and start getting ready to care for our trees again. Los restantes 2,902 fueron sembrados pero sus orígenes específicos no fueron registrados. Y ya que la iniciativa completó su meta antes de tiempo, y había fondos disponibles, se estarán sembrando 150,000 árboles más durante el curso de los próximos tres años. Ahora es el momento de cuidar esos árboles. Además de que los árboles son estéticamente agradables, estos proveen otros beneficios. Mejoran la calidad del aire, frenan el cambio climático, provee hogar a la vida silvestre y aumenta el valor de las propiedades. Mis niños y yo adoptamos los árboles en nuestra calle en el 2011. Los regamos con 30 galones de agua a la semana de mayo a octubre. Le ponemos abono dos veces al año, y sembramos bulbos de narcisos en las faldas de los árboles. Cada primavera esperamos las señales de una nueva planta, y nos preparamos para cuidar de nuestros árboles nuevamente. Ha impactado a otros en nuestra comunidad, y también vienen y nos ayudan. Eight years ago, city stakeholders had a vision that a million trees could be planted in New York.
New York is the first city to take on such a project.
The number of trees planted by borough is as follows: Brooklyn, 182,593, Manhattan, 80,016, Queens, 284,755, Staten Island, 173,134 and the Bronx, 276,600. The remaining 2,902 were planted, but their specific origins were not recorded.
Now it’s time to take care of those trees.
