I Love the Bronx – Trees and Laughs

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.

“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.

A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.

Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.

“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”

For the last several weeks, New York Restoration Project (NYRP) has been conducting tree giveaways. NYRP is a not-for-profit organization founded by American singer, actress, and entrepreneur Bette Midler.

The organization seeks to create a cleaner and greener city through the restoration and revitalization of green spaces throughout the five boroughs.

The Bronx has some of the highest asthma rates, and death-related incidents from asthma are also higher than the average of other boroughs. Trees do not only have an aesthetic value; they help trap pollutants from the air that can damage our lungs. They also help with storm water runoff. Our combined sewage system overflows when it rains. This causes raw sewage to enter our waterways and disturb ecological systems and aquatic life. Trees beds provide a place for rain water to be captured, reducing the amount of water entering our sewers.

Bronx-based organizations have teamed up with NYRP for tree giveaways in our borough.

Bronx Park East Community Association will be hosting a giveaway on Sat., Oct. 19th from 12 – 2 p.m. at Bronx Park East and Waring Avenue. The Woodlawn Conservancy is holding its own giveaway on Sat., Nov. 9th between 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Jerome and Bainbridge Avenues. And the Urban Rebuilding Initiative will host its giveaway on Sat., Nov. 16th from 12:30 p.m.– 2:30 p.m. at 1591 Boston Road.

There are a few stipulations to receiving a free tree.

The tree must be planted in the five boroughs. The tree cannot be planted in the street, in a public park, in a container, on a terrace or on a balcony and you must care for the tree. This is ideal for homeowners and business owners who wish to promote healthier communities and make for better business environments.

In addition, NYRP is teaming up with Parallel Exit, a New York-based physical theater company that will blend vaudeville, mime, dance, circus, music, and magic, for a special event to entertain South Bronx families and introduce them to a uniquely entertaining art form.

This free, family-friendly event is scheduled for Sat., Oct. 19th at the Target Bronx Community Garden located at 1025 Anderson Avenue between 164th and 165th Streets.

There will be two one-hour long performances at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

This week, I want to invite you all for a day of fun. It’s only an hour – not much of the day, but it will transform you.

And for all the freebie lovers, all attendees will be given a gift from NYRP.

Come on out, bring family and friends, and enjoy an hour in a beautiful green space filled with laughs. Since it is physical theater, which means it’s largely nonverbal, language barriers don’t exist.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables. “Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro vecindario, lo que ofrece y cómo prestar ayuda a nuestro medio ambiente”.

De esta nueva etapa en su vida, Martell dice: “¡Nunca me he sentido tan viva!”

Desde hace varias semanas, New York Restoration Project (NYRP) ha estado regalando árboles. NYRP es una organización sin fines de lucro fundada por la cantante, actriz y empresaria, Bette Midler.

La organización busca crear una ciudad más limpia y verde a través de la restauración y revitalización de los espacios verdes en los cinco condados.

El Bronx tiene una de las tasas más altas de asma y los incidentes relacionados con la muerte por asma son también superiores a la media de otros condados. Los árboles no sólo tienen un valor estético, sino que ayudarán a atrapar contaminantes del aire que pueden dañar nuestros pulmones. También ayudan con la escorrentía de aguas pluviales. Nuestro sistema de alcantarillado combinado se desborda cuando llueve. Esto provoca que las aguas negras entren en nuestras vías fluviales y perturben los sistemas ecológicos y la vida acuática. Las camas de árboles proporcionan un lugar para que el agua de lluvia sea capturada, reduciendo la cantidad de agua que entra en nuestras alcantarillas.

Organizaciones con base en el Bronx se han unido con NYRP para regalar árboles en nuestro condado.

La Asociación Bronx Park East Community será la anfitriona de un evento para regalar árboles el sábado 19 de octubre de 12 a 2 p.m. en el Bronx Park East y avenida Waring. Woodlawn Conservancy llevará a cabo su propio evento el sábado 9 de noviembre entre las 9:30 y las 11:30 a.m. en las avenidas Jerome y Bainbridge. Y la Iniciativa de Reconstrucción Urbana tendrá su evento el sábado 16 de noviembre de 12:30 a 2:30 p.m. en el 1591 de Boston Road.

Hay algunas disposiciones para recibir un árbol gratuito.
