I Love the Bronx: Top Dog

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
Many years ago, in light of my son’s asthma, we had to remove our cat from our home.
It wasn’t an easy decision, but a necessary one.
We took our pet to a pet receiving center, and were informed that if the cat was not adopted in a week, he would be put down.
It is not an uncommon practice, as euthanasia is practiced in most pet receiving centers throughout the city.
There is one local exception.
Just south of Westchester Square, at 2515 Newbold Avenue, there is NYC’s Top Dog, Inc. and New Beginnings Animal Rescue.
Pedro E. Rosario founded the organization in November 2010.
Rosario moved here from Santo Domingo when he was 7. His love for animals stems from caring for and tending to farm animals during his childhood.
For 16 years, he worked for the NYC Department of Health’s Animal Care and Control. Under his management, the rate of euthanasia dropped to record lows as more rescued animals were adopted.
Soon, Rosario took his passion to the next level. He invested his time and money and established his own animal boarding services and shelter. From the beginning, his organization adhered to a “no-kill” policy.
The organization is a registered 501(c)3, and has been kept afloat by donations and volunteer workers.
The shelter currently has nearly 90 animals, all pets just waiting to be adopted.
And these are tough times.
Rosario explained that the expenses incurred in keeping the facility running are simply too high. If money is not raised quickly, the facility could see its last days before the end of the summer.
Rent alone has soared to over $4,000 a month.
This past Sat., Jun. 7th, the organization hosted a fundraiser.
Among the supporters who stopped in to lend a hand were Baron Ambrosia, of Bronxnet’s Bronx Flavor, Bronx Pop, Lovie Pignata, and Da Click and Family of Loyalty, AC. Dozens more came out and joined the festivities on Saturday, and my son and I were two of many excited to tour the space and visit with all the adorable animals.
Should you be seeking a pet, all that is required to adopt is a fully completed application and small fee.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro vecindario, lo que ofrece y cómo prestar ayuda a nuestro medio ambiente”.
De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.
Hace muchos años, a la luz del asma de mi hijo, tuvimos que sacar de casa nuestro gato.
No fue una decisión fácil, pero necesaria.
Llevamos a nuestro gato a un centro receptor de mascotas, donde nos informaron que si el gato no era adoptado en una semana, sería sacrificado.
No es una práctica poco común ya que la eutanasia se practica en la mayoría de los centros de recepción de mascotas en toda la ciudad.
Hay una excepción local.

Decenas más salieron y se unieron a las festividades, y mi hijo y yo fuimos dos de los muchos emocionados de visitar el espacio y a todos los adorables animales.
