I Love the Bronx: The Point

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
As a single mom of teenagers, I know all too well the scarcity of low-cost, high-quality programs for our kids.
But there are also some real gems.
This week, I’d like to share one of the best programs in the Bronx. The Point Community Development Center (The Point), located at 940 Garrison Avenue in Hunts Point, is a treasure trove.
The Point offers teens opportunities to get involved in photography, music, visual art, and dance, in addition to community organizing programs for social and environmental justice and youth leadership, just to name a few.
It has been in existence for over 10 years; strong leadership and dedicated staff continue meeting the needs of the youth community.
The building was originally part of the Bank Note building, and was then used as a bagel factory. The founding members renovated the once-abandoned factory to its current state – and it is a must see! A black box theater, dark room and art space are just some of the areas dedicated to community development. Bascom Catering and Events has a wonderful restaurant within the premises.
As I recently toured the building, I was pleased to see that it is among the spots visited by Hip Hop Hush Tours, a tour company that celebrates New York City as the birthplace of hip hop. It often features celebrity guests and hip hop legends as Grandmaster Caz and Kurtis Blow and is focused on four elements of the genre: dj’ing, mc’ing, graffiti artistry, and B-boy and B-girl dance techniques.
On the afternoon of my visit, The Point’s black box theater was being used to host a breakdancing class. It was amazing to observe the positive reactions of the visitors. Soon enough, a circle was formed and all were encouraged to jump in and bust a move or two.
Moreover, The Point has teamed up with The Knowledge House to offer a free technology program for participants ages 17-24. On Sat., Mar. 1st, an orientation will be held. The program, which includes computer coding, is one that can easily run from hundreds to thousands of dollars. However, it is being offered at The Point for free.
The technology program will be held on Saturdays from March 8th to April 12th from 12 – 5 p.m.
As a mom, and someone who works directly with Bronx youth, I know how much our local youth can benefit from these type of programs. I’ve spoken to countless parents who cannot afford to cultivate their children’s desire to learn more about technology. It is a growing field, and our children should not be left behind.
As Executive Director Kellie Torres explained it, “We are always looking to connect young people with new and creative opportunities here at The Point. We work hard to provide a safe fun and nurturing environment where young people feel respected and are encouraged to try new and innovative things like coding, social circus, community organizing and digital media.”

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.
Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro vecindario, lo que ofrece y cómo prestar ayuda a nuestro medio ambiente”.
De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.
Como madre soltera de adolescentes, conozco muy bien la escasez de programas de bajo costo y de alta calidad para nuestros hijos.
Pero también hay algunas verdaderas joyas.
Esta semana, me gustaría compartir con ustedes uno de los mejores programas en el Bronx. El Centro de Desarrollo Comunitario Point (The Point), ubicado en el 940 de la avenida Garrison en Hunts Point, es un tesoro.
The Point ofrece oportunidades para que los adolescentes se involucren en la fotografía, la música, las artes visuales y la danza, además de programas de organización comunitaria para la justicia social y ambiental y liderazgo juvenil, sólo por nombrar pocos.
Ha existido por más de 10 años; un liderazgo fuerte y un personal dedicado siguen atendiendo las necesidades de la comunidad de jóvenes.
El edificio fue originalmente parte del edificio Bank Note, y luego fue utilizado como fábrica de bagels. Los miembros fundadores de la fábrica renovaron el abandonado edificio a su estado actual y ¡es una visita obligada! Un teatro negro, un cuarto oscuro y un espacio artístico son sólo algunas de las áreas dedicadas al desarrollo comunitario. Bascom Catering and Events cuenta con un maravilloso restaurante dentro de las instalaciones.
Recientemente visité el edificio y me complació ver que se trata de uno de los lugares visitados por Hip Hop Hush Tours, una agencia de viajes que celebra la ciudad de Nueva York como el lugar de nacimiento del hip hop. A menudo cuenta con invitados famosos y leyendas del hip hop como Grandmaster Caz y Kurtis Blow y se centra en cuatro elementos del género: pinchar, mc’ing, arte del graffiti y técnicas de baile B-boy y B-girl.
La tarde de mi visita, el teatro negro de The Point se utilizaba para albergar una clase de breakdance. Fue increíble observar las reacciones positivas de los visitantes. Muy pronto, se formó una esfera y todos se animaron a saltar y reventar un movimiento o dos.
Por otra parte, The Point se ha asociado con La Casa del Conocimiento para ofrecer un programa de tecnología gratuito para edades de 17 a 24 años. El sábado 1 de marzo, se llevará a cabo una orientación. El programa, que incluye codificación de cómputo, es uno que puede costar fácilmente desde cientos hasta miles de dólares. Sin embargo, se está ofreciendo en The Point de forma gratuita.
El programa tecnológico se llevará a cabo los sábados del 8 marzo al 12 abril de 12-5 pm.
Como madre, y alguien que trabaja directamente con los jóvenes del Bronx, sé lo mucho que nuestra juventud local puede beneficiarse de este tipo de programas. He hablado con un sinnúmero de padres que no pueden permitirse el lujo de cultivar el deseo de sus hijos de aprender más acerca de la tecnología. Se trata de un campo cada vez mayor, y nuestros hijos no deben quedarse atrás.
Como la directora ejecutivo Kellie Torres explicó, “Estamos siempre buscando conectar a los jóvenes con nuevas y creativas oportunidades aquí en The Point. Trabajamos duro para ofrecer una diversión segura y un ambiente nutrido, donde los jóvenes se sientan respetados y se les anime a probar cosas nuevas e innovadoras, como la codificación, el circo social, la organización comunitaria y los medios digitales”.
