I Love the Bronx: The American Dream

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
For the past several Saturdays, members of the Bronx chapter of the social justice organization the National Action Network (NAN) have set up a table with petitions in front of 1450 East Avenue.
The location was once the home of Loew’s American Theater (The American). But this past September, in a move that went largely unnoticed at first by many local residents and community members, the theater was shut down.
Built in 1939, the theater officially opened in 1942. Before its closing, it was the last of three neighborhood movie theaters in the Parkchester area.
For months since, the theater has been gutted out and construction has been ongoing.
This past Sat., Jul. 19th, I made my way over to the theater.
Michelle Alleyne of the NAN Bronx Chapter explained that an Advisory Board has been formed and it is seeking the support of local businesses and residents to keep the movie theater open. The Board includes members of the Office of Assemblymember Luis Sepúlveda, PEP for Seniors, RAIN, Adopt-A-Friend, Muslim Community Report Newsletter, Community Board 9, St. Paul’s Church, Building Preservation Corporation and NAN Bronx Chapter.
And in following weeks, the work to raise awareness will continue.
On Sat., Jul. 26th, between 12 – 1:30 p.m., NAN’s will be holding a press conference in front of the theater.
Alleyne noted that TJX Companies and a prospective movie theater buyer from Connecticut have been discussing the possible reopening of the theater.
What is needed now is the support of the community.
In December, NAN started an online petition via MoveOn.org entitled “Save Parkchester American Bow Tie Theatre”. Over 1000 signatures have been collected.
Moreover, their constant presence in Parkchester has generated hundreds of additional signatures.
Alleyne added that the status is still pending, an application for landmark designation has been filed.
Months before the closing of the American, Whitestone Cinemas had also closed. It means that the entire borough of the Bronx has only two movie theaters: the movie complex on 161st Street and the AMC in Co-op City.
I invite everyone to come out on July 26th to hear the most current developments of this campaign and to support NAN’s cause to have the theater in Parkchester reopened.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y cómo ayudar a nuestro medio ambiente”.
De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.
Hace varios sábados, miembros del capítulo del Bronx de la organización de justicia social Red de Acción Nacional (NAN por sus siglas en inglés) han puesto en marcha una mesa con peticiones frente al 1450 de la avenida East.
La ubicación fue alguna vez el hogar de Loew’s American Theater (The American). Pero en septiembre pasado, en un movimiento que pasó casi desapercibido por muchos residentes locales y miembros de la comunidad, el teatro fue cerrado.
Construido en 1939, el teatro se inauguró oficialmente en 1942. Antes de su cierre, fue la última de las tres salas de cine del barrio en la zona de Parkchester.
Durante meses desde entonces, el teatro ha sido eviscerado y la construcción se ha venido realizando.
El pasado sábado, 19 de julio, me dirigí hacia el teatro.
Michelle Alleyne de NAN, capítulo del Bronx, explicó que un consejo consultivo se ha formado y está buscando el apoyo de empresas y residentes locales para mantener el cine abierto. El consejo incluye a miembros de la oficina del asambleísta Luis Sepúlveda, PEP for Seniors, RAIN, Adopt-A-Friend, Muslim Community Report Newsletter, la Junta Comunitaria 9, la iglesia St. Paul, la Corporación de Preservación de edificios y NAN capítulo del Bronx.
Y en las semanas siguientes, la labor de conciencia continuará.
El sábado, 26 de julio, entre las 12:00 p.m. y la 1:30 p.m., NAN llevará a cabo una conferencia de prensa frente del teatro.
Alleyne señaló que TJX Companies y un potencial comprador de cine de Connecticut han estado discutiendo la posible reapertura del teatro.
Lo que se necesita ahora es el apoyo de la comunidad.
En diciembre, NAN inició una petición en línea a través de MoveOn.org, que lleva por nombre “Save Parkchester American Bow Tie Theatre”. Más de 1,000 firmas se han recopilado.
Por otra parte, su presencia constante en Parkchester ha generado cientos de firmas adicionales.
Alleyne agregó que el estatus aún está pendiente, una solicitud de designación de monumento ha sido presentada.
