I Love the Bronx: Street Steps

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.

“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.

A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.

Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.

“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”

Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”

Growing up, we would visit family that lived on Tiebout and Marion Avenues near Fordham Road.

To get from one location to the next, we’d utilize the street steps on 187th Street that connected Marion Avenue to Elm Place.

I remember our being fascinated by the passageway, and we would run up and down the stairs with my cousins until we all grew tired.

In the Bronx alone, we have over 60 street steps.

I grew up in the East Bronx, where the land is flatter than other parts of the borough. But I have always been intrigued by the elevation and heights of the West Bronx.

Street steps are essential for connecting neighborhoods and for providing pedestrian routes to public transportation hubs and commercial strips.

For example, Jerome Slope, on Jerome Avenue and 165th Street, is a set of zig-zag steps that connects Jerome Avenue to Anderson Avenue.

Unlike the set of steps I ran up and down when I was a child, Jerome Slope has different levels with benches and areas to look out and enjoy the view.

Imagine how many of us make daily trips up and down some of these very long steps without paying much attention. This summer, I took a closer look.

Walking on Netherland Avenue, by West 230th Street, for example, you will find that there are street steps that lead to Johnson Avenue and then connect further to Riverdale Avenue. The steps stretch some four blocks, making it the longest set in the Bronx.

Some say these are the city’s longest street steps.

Within Ewen Park, there is a set of steps complete with resting points that takes you throughout the park and provides a beautiful view of the park. They were renovated in 2001.

On Broadway, by 231st Street, there is another set of street steps, decorated with what appears to be a Celtic design, that connects Broadway to Naples Terrace.

Next time you are out and about, take the opportunity to venture off the regular path and elevate yourself. Seek out a set of street steps and see the Bronx from a whole different level.

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.

“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y cómo ayudar a nuestro medio ambiente”.

De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.

Al crecer, visitábamos a la familia que vivía en las avenidas Tiebout y Marion, cerca de Fordham Road.

Para ir de una ubicación a otra, utilizábamos la calle escalera de la calle 187, que conectaba la avenida Marion con Elm Place.

Recuerdo que a mis primos y a mí nos fascinaba el pasadizo y subíamos y bajábamos la escalera hasta el cansancio.

Solamente en el Bronx, existen más de 60 calles escalera.

Yo crecí en el este del Bronx, donde la tierra es más plana que en otras partes del condado, pero siempre he estado intrigada por la elevación y las alturas del oeste del Bronx.

Las calles escaleras son esenciales para conectar los barrios y proporcionar rutas peatonales a centros de transporte público y zonas comerciales.

Por ejemplo, Jerome Slope, en la avenida Jerome y la calle 165, es una serie de escaleras en zigzag que conectan la avenida Jerome con la avenida Anderson.

A diferencia de las escaleras que subía y bajaba cuando era niña, Jerome Slope tiene diferentes niveles, con bancas y zonas para observar y disfrutar de la vista.

Imagine cuántos de nosotros hacemos viajes diarios arriba y abajo por algunas de estas muy largas escaleras sin prestar mucha atención. Este verano, eché un vistazo más de cerca.

Caminando sobre la avenida Netherland, por la calle 230 oeste, por ejemplo, encontrará que hay calles escalera que conducen a la avenida Johnson y luego se conectan a la avenida Riverdale. Las escaleras se extienden a unas cuatro manzanas, haciéndolas el conjunto más largo del Bronx. Algunos dicen que estas son las calles escalera más largas de la ciudad.

Dentro de Ewen Park, hay un conjunto de calles escalera completas, con puntos de descanso que te llevan por todo el parque y ofrecen una hermosa vista. Fueron renovadas en 2001.

En Broadway, por la calle 231, hay otro conjunto de calles escalera, decoradas con lo que parece ser un diseño celta, que conecta Broadway con Naples Terrace.

La próxima vez que salga, tome la oportunidad de aventurarse fuera del camino normal. Busque unas calles escalera y observe al Bronx desde un nivel completamente diferente.
