I Love the Bronx: Stars of the Season

Despite the warm temperatures, it still feels like Christmas in our borough.

The Bronx Museum of the Arts just held its Holiday Market, which included 25 local vendors, and when I visited this past Sunday, I was glad to see how busy it was

My first stop was at Lucia Hernández’s table. I know Lucia from her work at Bryant Hill Community Garden in Hunts Point, but hadn’t known about her handmade jewelry. She presented me with the gift of a beautiful pair of green butterflies, which I can’t wait to wear.

Next up was the Morris Perk table. The owner Lovie Pignata is another good friend of mine, and there is no doubt that her Bronx Blend of Morris Perk coffee is one of my favorites. On Sunday, she even offered up cold brew coffee. In addition, she had tote bags, coloring books, and holiday items featuring many Bronx artists, holiday items. Many are available online at morrisperk.com.

The “From the Bronx” table offered a wonderful selection of t-shirts, and I picked up two. One read “Project Bronx” and the other exclaimed “The South Bronx Never Stops Creating.” They too are online at fromtheBronx.com.

A particular piece from the home décor of the company Humble Trees has made it onto my wish list. All of their products are handmade in the Bronx, from repurposed wood and recycled tree stakes. While they do not have a website, you can check out their products on www.facebook.com/HumbleTrees2015.

My son purchased some handcrafted pieces from the assorted craft items at the Point’s Aficionado Arts table. He struck up a conversation with the artist, and soon, they were talking about hosting teen art classes.

I was also happy to see Lily Kesselman of Brook Park Chickens and the South Bronx Farmers Market.

She has a line of tee-shirts that read “Bronx Chicks Rule” with an outline of “Betsy,” a real Bronx chicken.

This year, the shirts are available in an assortment of colors. You can find them online at www.etsy.com by searching “Bronx Chicks.”

There was also artwork by Laura Álvarez, the Bronx Documentary Project, Beazer’s Garden, Dennis Redmoon Darkeem, Potter’s Jewelry, Resourceful Design, Special Mama, Spizane, Taylor Made Creations for All Occasions, Inc., White Pine Community Farm and Youniquely Created, Inc.

Though you may have missed the Holiday Market, there are always items for sale in the museum gift shop. Make sure you check out the books, posters, and unique earrings from artists Leenda Bonilla Román Pagan and Ana “Rokafella” García; tote bags from Joe Conzo and the Bronx Socialite, and the latest line of the Museum’s mugs.

This Christmas season, remember to support the Bronx!

A pesar de las cálidas temperaturas, se siente como Navidad en nuestro condado.

El Museo de Arte del Bronx acaba de celebrar su Mercado de Fiestas, que incluyó a 25 proveedores locales, y cuando lo visité el domingo pasado me alegré de ver lo lleno que estaba

Mi primera parada fue en la mesa de Lucía Hernández. Conozco a Lucía desde su trabajo en el Jardín Comunitario Bryant Hill en Hunts Point, pero no sabía de sus joyas hechas a mano. Ella me presentó el regalo de un hermoso par de mariposas verdes, que no puedo esperar para usar.

La siguiente fue la mesa de Morris Perk. La propietaria, Lovie Pignata, es otra buena amiga mía y no hay duda de que su mezcla Bronx de café Morris Perk es una de mis favoritas. El domingo ofreció un café frío de cerveza. Además, tenía bolsas, libros para colorear, artículos de fiesta de muchos artistas del Bronx y artículos navideños. La mesa “Desde el Bronx” ofrecía una maravillosa selección de camisetas, y elegí dos. Una decía “Proyecto Bronx” y la otra “El sur del Bronx nunca deja de crear”. Ellos también están en línea en fromtheBronx.com.

Una pieza en particular de decoración para el hogar de la compañía Humble Trees llegó a mi lista de deseos. Todos sus productos son hechos a mano en el Bronx, de madera reutilizada y estacas de árboles reciclados.
