I Love the Bronx: Same Girl

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
Throughout the month of December, hometown girl Jennifer López was back in the Bronx filming the video for her upcoming single “Same Girl” at several locations in the borough.
A short teaser video was released some weeks ago on Youtube.
Segments of the video were recorded on Castle Hill Avenue, around the corner from her childhood home. During a scene in which she performed with her dancers within a fenced off lot, local fans gathered and cheered them on. She had them join in the chorus, and posted pictures on her Twitter page.
Other locations included Westchester Avenue, the IRT #6 Morrison Soundview train station and the historic Andrew Freedman Home.
I had the opportunity of sitting in for a spell during the filming at the latter location.

López’s energy filled the room. Dressed in a black jacket, jeans, high boots and a Yankees cap, the 44-year-old mother of two looked amazing.
She joked around with her team, and smiled and laughed readily with others. Despite the entourages we often think celebrities travel with, the López crew was less than a dozen folks.
She filmed other scenes throughout the Home that day and also returned on others.
The full length video for “Same Girl” should be released in a couple of weeks, just before the debut of her eighth studio album.
Despite the glamour, riches and fame, and after many years in the spotlight, Jennifer López chose to focus her attention – and the world’s – on her native Bronx.
I can’t wait to see the finished project and catch scenes of our urban landscape.

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.
Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro vecindario, lo que ofrece y cómo prestar ayuda a nuestro medio ambiente”.
De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.
A lo largo del mes de diciembre, Jennifer López – la chica del Bronx – regresó para filmar el video de su próximo sencillo “Same Girl”, en varios lugares del condado.
Un video teaser corto fue lanzado hace unas semanas en Youtube.
Algunos segmentos del video se grabaron en la avenida Castle Hill, en la esquina de su casa de la infancia. Durante una escena en la que actuó con sus bailarines dentro de un lote cercado, los fans locales se reunieron para animarlos. Ella hizo que se unieran al coro y publicó fotos en su página de Twitter.
Otros lugares incluyeron la avenida Westchester, la estación de tren IRT # 6 Morrison Soundview y la histórica casa Andrew Freedman.

A pesar del glamour, la riqueza y la fama, y después de muchos años en el centro de atención, Jennifer López optó por centrar su atención -y la del mundo- en su natal Bronx.
No puedo esperar a ver el proyecto terminado y encontrar escenas de nuestro paisaje urbano.
