I Love the Bronx: Project Bronx

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
I came across Project Bronx last year when someone shared a link to one of their videos, Race Relations in the Bronx. In less than 10 minutes, the video captures Adam Levine-Peres’ interviews with more than half a dozen Bronxites in several locations within the borough.
After viewing the video, I noticed their Youtube channel had other videos. I soon had watched them all. Since then, I’ve been enjoying the videos more and more and have been sharing them with friends.
I recently also had the opportunity of personally meeting the man behind the project.
Levine-Peres, founder of “Project Bronx”, was born and raised in Hunts Point, and has lived in the Soundview and Shorehaven areas.
He still resides in the borough, and also teaches at a school in the Bronx. He studied the art of drama and musical theater in LaGuardia High School, received his undergraduate degree in mass communication and theater at Lehman College, and holds a master’s degree in special education from Hunter College.
Levine-Peres explains, “Project Bronx is a community-inspired initiative. Without our community, there would be no Project Bronx. We are here to raise awareness of certain issues that concern our neighborhoods as well as promote the beautiful diverse culture we share in the Bronx. The goal of Project Bronx is to: inform, engage and highlight the Voices of our community.”
“The reason for the creation of Project Bronx was because I was tired of the marginalization of our stories,” he adds. “I also became tired of the media ignoring or misrepresenting Bronxites on television and movies.”
The two other key players are Levine-Peres’ friends and colleagues, Kat Luzo and Sara Webber, of the female production company “June Baby Productions.” The Queens-based film crew started filming Project Bronx last year, and now they are in their second season.
Season One is comprised of 9 videos. The small segments not only provide a platform for Bronxites to create their narrative, they also create conversations. When I have watched them with friends, we find ourselves taking about issues that were raised.
Currently Season Two is at its fifth episode. Some of the topics cover interracial marriages, women harassment and street art.
One episode that I am very excited about is our ‘Women of the Bronx’ segment. The ladies from June Baby Production made an interesting observation. After a long day of filming, they noted [that they] had rarely interviewed females from the borough.
“Why is that?” asked Levine-Peres and his team. “So, we made it our mission to find more women to interview for the show this season!”

Amo el Bronx: Proyecto Bronx

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.
Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro vecindario, lo que ofrece y cómo prestar ayuda a nuestro medio ambiente”.
De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.
Supe de “Proyecto Bronx’ el año pasado cuando alguien compartió un enlace de uno de sus videos “Relaciones de Raza en el Bronx”. En menos de diez minutos, el video captura las entrevistas de Adam Levine-Peres con más de media docena de residentes del Bronx en varios lugares dentro del condado. Luego de verlo, me di cuenta que su canal de ‘YouTube’ tenía otros videos y los vi todos. He estado disfrutando los videos y compartiéndolos con mis amigos, y este año tuve la oportunidad de conocer a la persona detrás del proyecto.
Levine-Peres, fundador de “Proyecto Bronx”, nació y se crió en la sección de Hunts Point en el Bronx. También pasó algún tiempo en las áreas de Soundview y Shorehave.
Todavía vive en el condado, y hasta enseña en una escuela en el Bronx. Estudio el arte del drama y teatro musical en la Escuela Superior La Guardia, recibió su título en comunicación social y teatro en el Colegio Lehman, y una maestría en educación especial en el Colegio Hunter.
Levine-Peres explica, “Proyecto Bronx es una iniciativa inspirada en la comunidad. Queriendo decir, sin nuestra comunidad no habría ‘Proyecto Bronx’. Estamos aquí para levantar conciencia de ciertos asuntos que preocupan a nuestros vecindarios como también para promover la maravillosa cultura diversa que compartimos en el Bronx. El objetivo de “Proyecto Bronx” es el: informar, participar y destacar las voces de nuestra comunidad.”
La razón de la creación de “’Proyecto Bronx’ fue debido a que estaba cansado de la marginación de nuestras historias. También me cansé de los medios de comunicación ignorando o tergiversando a los residentes del Bronx en la televisión y las películas”.
Las otras dos personas importantes son los colegas y amigos de Levine-Peres, Kat Luzo y Sara Webber de la compañía de producción e mujeres “June Baby Productions”. El equipo de producción con sede en Queens comenzó a filmar “Proyecto Bronx” el año pasado, y ahora están en su segunda temporada.
La Temporada Uno está compuesta de 9 videos. Los pequeños segmentos no solo proveen una plataforma para los residentes del Bronx crear su narrativa, también crean conversaciones. Nosotros los vemos con amigos y nos encontramos hablando acerca de asuntos que fueron planteados.
La actual Temporada Dos está en su quinto episodio. Algunos de los tópicos cubren matrimonios interraciales, hostigamiento a la mujer y arte en las calles.
Un episodio con el cual estoy bien emocionada es el segmento “Mujeres del Bronx”. Las damas de “June Baby Production” hicieron una interesante observación luego de un largo día de filmación. Dijeron, ¿rara vez entrevistamos mujeres del Bronx, porque es eso?
Peres-Levine dijo, “Así es que hicimos nuestra misión el encontrar más mujeres para entrevistar en los programas de esta temporada”.
