I Love the Bronx: Peace and Power

The day of September 29 marked one year since local historian and community activist Kristopher Morgan Powell passed away.
Morgan, as he was known to us, made countless contributions to our borough. He researched history from various angles, and created essays and self-guided walking tours on his blog, the Bronx River Sankofa, so that everyone could have free access to information.
I was fortunate enough to develop a friendship with Morgan, and even luckier that he took the time to take me, and at times my children, on personal tours of the Bronx.
Morgan had the ability, with his charm and eloquent way of speaking, to bring history to life. He’d stand before a given site and explain things in a manner that further stirred curiosity.
I recall how patient he was when people asked questions, and how he was full of life at his presentations and walking tours.
His smile was bright, his laughter contagious, and there was always a twinkle in his eye.
Early this year, we honored our friend by planting 200 shrubs and plants along the Bronx River, by Burke Bridge. Over 80 volunteers came out for the special event.
In May, Morgan was finally laid to rest at the historic Woodlawn Cemetery. His sisters, nieces and father attended the service. It was beautiful to see how even in his passing, he is still bringing people together.
Last year, Morgan branched out to incorporate Brooklyn in his tours and his work. He conducted a 5 East New York Community Garden tour. I recall our conversations, and how stubborn I was to not support his endeavors as they did not include the Bronx. I still remember him asking, “You really aren’t coming?”
How I wish I would go back in time and change my response.
In his honor, NYC Parks Green Thumb will be hosting the “Morgan Powell Tribute Walk” on October 17, 2015. Though we will not be in the borough I love, I will nonetheless support the work my friend began and head to Brooklyn. The tour will conclude with the planting of a memorial tree.
The tour commences at 11 a.m. at the UCC Youth Farm located at 613 Schenck Avenue (suggested route would be to take the 3 train to New Lots Avenue).
Morgan’s birthday is November 25. As a special tribute, we are working to conduct a service project at Virginia Park. It is a local green space across from the Parkchester train station. No date has been chosen, but you can keep apprised by visiting www.facebook.com/GIVE.Inc.
Though it has been a most challenging time without out friend, we vow to continue his memory and his work alive.

El 29 de septiembre se cumplió un año desde que el historiador local y activista comunitario Kristopher Morgan Powell falleció.
Morgan, como era conocido por nosotros, hizo innumerables contribuciones a nuestro condado. Investigó la historia desde varios ángulos y creó ensayos y recorridos a pie auto guiados en su blog, el Bronx River Sankofa, para que todos pudieran tener acceso gratuito a la información.
Yo tuve la suerte de desarrollar una amistad con Morgan, e incluso más suerte de que él se tomara el tiempo para llevarme, y a veces mis hijos, en viajes personales al Bronx.
Morgan tenía la capacidad, con su encanto y manera elocuente de hablar, de revivir la historia. Se paraba ante un determinado sitio y explicaba las cosas de una manera que provocaba aún más curiosidad.
Recuerdo lo paciente que era cuando la gente le hacía preguntas y cómo él llenaba de vida sus presentaciones y excursiones a pie.
Su sonrisa era brillante, su risa contagiosa y siempre había un brillo en sus ojos.
A principios de este año, honramos a nuestro amigo plantando 200 arbustos y plantas a lo largo del río Bronx, por el puente Burke. Más de 80 voluntarios llegaron al especial evento.
En mayo, Morgan fue finalmente enterrado en el histórico Cementerio Woodlawn. Sus hermanas, sobrinas y padre asistieron al servicio. Fue hermoso ver cómo incluso en su muerte seguía reuniendo a las personas.
El año pasado Morgan se diversificó para incorporar a Brooklyn en sus recorridos y su trabajo. Condujo un recorrido por 5 jardines comunitarios de East New York. Recuerdo nuestras conversaciones y lo mucho que me empeñé en no apoyar sus esfuerzos que no incluían al Bronx. Todavía lo recuerdo preguntándome: “¿De verdad no vienes?”.
Cuánto me gustaría volver en el tiempo y cambiar mi respuesta.
En su honor, NYC Parks Green Thumb será sede de la “Caminata homenaje a Morgan Powell” el 17 de octubre de 2015. A pesar de que no tendrá lugar en el condado que amo, apoyaré lo que mi amigo comenzó y me dirigiré a Brooklyn. El recorrido concluirá con la plantación de un árbol conmemorativo.
El paseo comienza a las 11 am en la Granja Juvenil UCC, ubicada en el No. 613 de la avenida Schenck (la ruta propuesta sería tomar el tren 3 a la avenida New Lots).
El cumpleaños de Morgan es el 25 de noviembre. Como un homenaje especial, estamos trabajando para llevar a cabo un proyecto de servicio en Virginia Park. Es un espacio verde local al otro lado de la estación de tren de Parkchester. Ninguna fecha ha sido elegida, pero puede mantenerse informado visitando www.facebook.com/GIVE.Inc.
A pesar de que han sido los momentos más desafiantes sin nuestro amigo, nos comprometemos a mantener su memoria y su obra vivas.
