I Love the Bronx: On the water

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
May 17 kicks off canoe paddling season in the Bronx, and the Bronx River Alliance will host its annual Flotilla at Starlight Park this year.
It is a fun-filled day for all with music, paddling events, bike clinics and much more.
Experienced paddlers can help raise funds for free paddling programs by participating in the 5K Canoe Challenge – and registration is still available. The canoe relay race is the perfect opportunity for you to show off your skills, and help raise money for a good cause.
Still, there are still plenty of Bronxites who do not realize that there is access to the Bronx River.
And who can blame them?
For many years, the river was polluted, strewn with garbage, cars, tires and
other industrial waste.
The efforts of the Bronx River Alliance, and countless community organizations and volunteers, has allowed for the opportunity of experiencing the River like never before.
Growing up in the Bronx, I would have never imagined the River being restored to its present-day condition, or the waterfront opportunities currently available.
You haven’t really experienced the Bronx until you canoe in the only fresh water river in New York City.
It truly is an amazing experience.
I will admit, at first, I was afraid to canoe. Some parts of the River are very shallow, while others are very deep. My inability to swim made me fearful, until I was convinced to try it out. The Alliance is concerned with safety first, and no one is allowed in a canoe with proper equipment. A life jacket is required, and followed by a lesson on the use of the paddles.
Once you get on the River, all fear is washed away. The picturesque views transport you somewhere far away, though you have not traveled out of the borough.
Occasionally you will see an egret, a heron, turtles, fish, and if you’re really lucky, a beaver.
This wildlife is a testament to the revitalization of the River.
The Bronx River is now filled with access points, from Hunts Point Riverside all
the way up to Shoe Lace Park.
Most paddling is free, and there are even opportunities for groups and professional development.
But don’t take my word for it, come on out and experience the Bronx River for yourself.

Como parte de nuestra serie de BFP destacando los diferentes espacios preferidos, las cosas y las personas en nuestra ciudad, nos dirigimos a Nilka Martell, quien continúa explorando su ciudad natal.
“Yo soy nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.
Una asistente legal por más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, que desde entonces ha estado dedicando su tiempo a explorar el Bronx.
Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes estén conscientes e informados de lo encantadora que nuestra ciudad es, lo que ofrece, y la forma de echar una mano en nuestro entorno.”
De este nuevo tiempo en su vida, Martell dice, “nunca me he sentido tan viva.”
¡El 17 de mayo comienza la temporada de remar en canoa en el Bronx!
La Alianza del Río Bronx, la cual sirve como la voz coordinada del río, este año estará celebrando su Flotilla anual en el Parque Starlight.
Es un divertido día lleno de música, eventos de remos, clínicas de ciclismo y mucho, mucho más.
Los remadores con experiencia pueden ayudar a recaudar fondos para programas gratuitos de remo participando en el Reto de Canoas 5k. La inscripción todavía está abierta. La carrera de relevo de canoas es la oportunidad perfecta para usted mostrar sus destrezas, y ayuda a recaudar dinero para una buena causa. Todavía hay muchos residentes del Bronx que no saben que hay acceso al Río Bronx.
Por muchos años el río estuvo contaminado, lleno de basura, autos, neumáticos y otros desperdicios industriales.
Los esfuerzos de la Alianza del Río Bronx, y un sinnúmero de organizaciones comunales y voluntarios, han permitido la oportunidad de experimentar el río como nunca antes. Creciendo en el Bronx, nunca me hubiera imaginado que el río fuera restaurado a su condición actual, o las oportunidades en la orilla que ahora están disponibles.
No haz experimentado realmente el Bronx hasta que remes en el único río de agua dulce en la ciudad de Nueva York.
Verdaderamente es una experiencia increíble.
Debo admitir, que le tenía miedo a remar en canoa. Algunas partes del río son muy poco profundas, mientras que otras son bien profundas. Mi incapacidad de nadar me hacia temer, hasta que alguien me convenció que lo tratara. La Alianza esta preocupada primero con la seguridad, y nadie es permitido en una canoa sin el equipo necesario. Se requiere un chaleco salvavidas, seguido de una lección de cómo utilizar los remos.
Una vez estas en el río, todo temor desaparece. Las pintorescas vistas te transportan a algún lugar muy lejano, aunque no haz viajado fuera del condado.
Ocasionalmente podrás ver un airón, una garza, tortugas, peces y si ere realmente afortunado, un castor.
Esta fauna es un testamento de la revitalización del río.
El Río Bronx ahora está lleno de puntos de acceso, desde Hunts Point Riverside hasta el Parque Shoelace.
Algunos viajes de remo son gratis, viajes largos requieren un costo. Hay hasta oportunidades para grupos y desarrollo profesional.
