I Love the Bronx – MulchFest

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
The holiday season is coming to a close, and now is the time to recycle your tree.
MulchFest 2015 will be held on Saturday, January 10th and Sunday, January 11th between 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at several locations in the Bronx.
This annual event is bought to you by New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, New York City Department of Sanitation and GreeNYC.
Instead of wrapping up your tree for disposal, drop it off at a Mulchfest site. Your tree will be chipped and converted into mulch, or wood chips.
As you already know, the Bronx is compromised of 25% parkland. Mulch is used as a protective layer for our trees and plantings. When placed as a ring around tree trunks, mulch assists in controlling the growth of weeds and helps retain moisture. When it breaks down, becomes good compost nourishing and protecting the tree.
There are kinds of two sites – a chipping site and a drop-off site. If you choose to drop off your tree at a chipping site, you can take home a bag of mulch for your own garden or tree. If you choose to drop off your tree at a drop off site, those trees will later be converted into mulch. That mulch will used in parks, community gardens and for street trees throughout the city.
Chipping sites, where mulch will be distributed for free, are as follows: Brook Park at Brook Avenue and East 141st Street; Metropolitan Oval (Parkchester) at Metropolitan Avenue and Unionport Road; Soundview Park at Story and Morrison Avenues; and Van Cortlandt Park, at the golf course at Bailey Avenue and Van Cortlandt Park South). The Van Cortlandt Conservancy will also be hosting free arts and crafts along with free coffee and apple cider from Morris Perk.
The drop-off only locations are as follows: Co-Op City, at Co-Op Boulevard and Bellamy Loop; Crotona Park, at the Tennis House on Crotona Avenue; Echo Park, at Tremont Avenue and Valentine Street; El Flamboyan Community Garden, at Tinton Avenue and E 150th Street; Fort #4 Playground, at Reservoir and Webb Avenues; Haffen Park, at Hammersley and Wickham Avenues; Kossuth Playground, at Mosholu Parkway North and Kossuth Avenue; Little Green Garden, at East 160th Street between Elton and Melrose Avenues; Padre Plaza, at Success Garden, located at East 139th Street between Brook and St. Ann’s Avenues; Pelham Bay Park, at Middletown Road and Stadium Avenue (near the parking lot); Poe Park, at Grand Concourse and East 192nd Street; St. James Park, at West 192nd Street and Jerome Avenue; St. Mary’s Park, at East 149th Street and St. Ann’s Avenue; Tremont Park, at East Tremont and Arthur Avenues; Van Cortlandt Park, at the Indian Fields Ballfield at East 233rd Street; and Williamsbridge Oval Park, at Reservoir Place and Reservior Oval.
Please remember to remove all ornaments, lights and tinsel before dropping off your tree.
Last year, over 30,000 trees were collected Please support this initiative and give back to the earth what it has so graciously given to us.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y cómo ayudar a nuestro medio ambiente”.
De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.
La temporada navideña se acerca a su fin y es momento de reciclar su árbol.
MulchFest 2015 se llevará a cabo el sábado 10 y el domingo 11 de enero entre las 10:00 am y las 2:00 pm en varios lugares del Bronx.
Este evento anual es traído a usted por el Departamento de Parques y Recreación de la ciudad de Nueva York, el Departamento de Sanidad de la ciudad de Nueva York y GreeNYC.
En lugar de envolver su árbol para su eliminación, entréguelo en un sitio Mulchfest. Su árbol será convertido en mantillo y abono, o en astillas de madera.
Como ya sabe, el Bronx tiene un 25% de zonas verdes. El mantillo se utiliza como una capa protectora para nuestros árboles y plantas. Cuando se coloca como anillo alrededor de los troncos de los árboles, ayuda a controlar el crecimiento de la maleza y a retener la humedad. Cuando se descompone, se convierte en abono nutritivo y protege al árbol.
Hay dos tipos de sitios: uno de astillado y uno de entrega. Si decide dejar su árbol en un sitio de astillado, se puede llevar a casa una bolsa de mantillo para su jardín o un árbol. Si decide dejar su árbol en uno de entrega, los árboles más tarde se convertirán en mantillo, el cual será utilizado en parques, jardines comunitarios y en árboles de la calle en toda la ciudad.
Los lugares de astillado, donde se distribuirá mantillo de forma gratuita, son los siguientes: el parque Brook en la avenida Brook y la calle 141este; Metropolitan Oval (Parkchester) en la avenida Metropolitan y Unionport Road; Soundview Park en las avenidas Story y Morrison y en el parque Van Cortlandt, en el campo de golf de la avenida Bailey y Van Cortlandt Park South. El Van Cortlandt Conservancy también organizará artes y artesanías gratuitas, además habrá café gratis y sidra de manzana de Morris Perk.
