I Love the Bronx – Morgan at Rest

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.

“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.

A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.

Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.

“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”

Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”

Losing a loved one is never easy. It doesn’t matter whether he or she was ill for some time or passes suddenly. As humans, we all hurt and seek some sort of closure.

Last September, Morgan Powell, a dear friend to many, and an advocate for the Bronx, passed away. His friends and family gathered in October at the Andrew Freedman Home for a “Celebration of Life” in his honor. Over 200 people attended the service then.

Though nearly seven months have passed, Morgan still has not been properly buried. Finally, however, with the assistance of online donations, and the family’s willingness to have his final resting place be in Woodlawn Cemetery, arrangements have been made for Sat., May 9^th.

The service will commence promptly at 11 a.m. at the Woolworth Chapel near the Jerome Avenue entrance of Woodlawn Cemetery. Immediately following the service, interment will be held at the Brookside section of the cemetery, closer to the entrance located at 233rd Street and Webster Avenue. A memorial rock, for the placement of Morgan’s ashes, will be placed along the entrance of the brook.

I cannot think of a more fitting final resting place for Morgan, a man who loved the Bronx and lived to preserve African American and Latino history as it pertained to the our borough.

I recall attending free history tours he led at Woodlawn, and other days when we’d just spend hours walking the grounds. In addition to speaking about some of greats buried at Woodlawn, like Madam C. J. Walker, Miles Davis, Celia Cruz and Duke Ellington, Morgan would point out the many amazing trees and plants.

His friends are determined to keep his legacy alive through continuing to his walking tours and creating events, like the tree planting held in his honor and memory on April 11 along the Bronx River.

Morgan’s contributions to the Bronx included over 12 years of research; countless walking tours and tree identification walks; lectures and presentations. His environmental work branched out to other boroughs like Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Those who were fortunate enough to have personally known Morgan are thrilled to know that his final resting place will be within the borough he loved the most. As I visited Woodlawn recently, even employees were happy to hear that a final place has been secured.

As friend and neighbor Mike Gupta said, “I’m glad that Morgan will be resting back at home, a place he cared so much for and volunteered in and I’m glad he will be resting along side other notable figures in both American and Bronx history.”

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.

“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y cómo ayudar a nuestro medio ambiente”.

De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”. 

Perder a un ser querido nunca es fácil. No importa si estuvo enfermo por algún tiempo o si pasó de repente. Como seres humanos, nos sentimos dolidos y buscamos algún tipo de cierre.

En septiembre pasado, Morgan Powell, un querido amigo de muchos y defensor del Bronx, falleció. Sus amigos y familiares se reunieron en octubre en la Casa Andrew Freedman para una “celebración de la vida” en su honor. Más de 200 personas asistieron al servicio.

Aunque han pasado casi siete meses, Morgan todavía no ha sido enterrado adecuadamente. Finalmente, con la ayuda de donaciones en línea y la voluntad de su familia para que su lugar final de descanso sea en el cementerio Woodlawn, se han hecho arreglos para el sábado 9 de mayo.

El servicio comenzará puntualmente a las 11 am en la capilla Woolworth, que está cerca de la entrada de la avenida Jerome del cementerio Woodlawn. Inmediatamente después del servicio, el sepelio tendrá lugar en la sección Brookside del cementerio, cerca de la entrada ubicada en la calle 233 y la avenida Webster. Una roca conmemorativa, para colocar las cenizas de Morgan, será puesta junto a la entrada del arroyo.

No puedo pensar en un lugar de descanso final más apropiado para Morgan, un hombre que amaba el Bronx y vivió para preservar la historia afroamericana y latina de nuestro condado.

Recuerdo asistir a recorridos históricos gratuitos que dirigió en Woodlawn, y otros días en los que simplemente pasábamos horas paseando por los jardines. Además de hablar sobre algunos de los grandes enterrados en Woodlawn, como Madam C.J. Walker, Miles Davis, Celia Cruz y Duke Ellington, Morgan señalaba los muchos árboles y plantas increíbles.

Sus amigos están decididos a mantener vivo su legado, manteniendo sus recorridos a pie y creando eventos, como la plantación de árboles en su honor y memoria el 11 de abril a lo largo del río Bronx.

Las contribuciones de Morgan al Bronx incluyen más de 12 años de investigación; incontables recorridos a pie y caminatas de identificación de árboles; conferencias y presentaciones. Su trabajo ambiental se diversificó hacia otros condados como Manhattan y Brooklyn.

Como dijo el amigo y vecino Mike Gupta: “Me alegro de que Morgan descanse en casa, un lugar por el que se preocupaba tanto y en el que fue voluntario, y también de que estará descansando junto a otras figuras notables tanto de la historia de América Latina como del Bronx”.
