I Love the Bronx: M4

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.

“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.

A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.

Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.

“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”

Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”

Much has changed in the almost four decades in which I have lived near Parkchester. Growing up, mom-and-pop businesses were the fabric of the community. I can still recall the days in which the streets were lined with small businesses that included a florist shop, a Hallmark card store, a delicatessen, a hardware store and a shoe repair business. Most of them have since disappeared, in light of the increasingly high rents that have led to many corporate, national chains to take their place.

But there are still a few holdouts, including the local eye care franchise Metro Optics.

Three generations of my family have trusted Metro Optics with our eye care. On December 9th, the owners hosted the ribbon-cutting for their fourth location in the Bronx at the Throggs Neck Shopping Center.

Over 100 people attended the event, which was co-hosted by the Bronx Chamber of Commerce.

Founded in 1978 by Mike Ungaro, Metro Optics continues to deliver quality eye care to residents and offers a wide selection of eye wear, including designer glasses. Metro Optics’ owners hosts free vision screenings throughout the borough, and are involved as contributors to not-for-profit organizations, supporters of local businesses and sponsors of community events.

In the more than 30 years my family has received eye care at Metro Optics, the doctors and staff have always been courteous and professional. In our experience, they seek to develop relationships with their customers and treat each person as an individual, as opposed to a chart number.

Nothing beats the feeling of walking in and being greeted personally by your name, followed by a slew of questions concerning my family:

“How are your folks?” “How are your sisters?”

More recently the common question has been, “Did your son break his glasses again?”

I appreciate the text messages and post cards reminding me of our annual exams, and I can always count of them for prompt emergency repair and warranty replacement.

They have been more than just eye care professional for us, and really seem to care about our overall well being.

Metro Optics’ original store is located on Metropolitan Avenue, thus the name “Metro” Optics. Its second location was established in Westchester Square, followed by a store in Hunts Point and most recently, their flagship store at the Throggs Neck Shopping Center, known as “M4”.

John Bonizio, Metro Optics’ General Manager explains, “M4, as we refer to it, marries healthcare, technology, and fashion, for a show-stopping impact. Virtually every industry is being disrupted by technology, and the optical industry is no exception. We saw a valuable opportunity to take the lead by creating a dedicated electronic eyewear department, in order to ensure the safe and effective use of wearable technology within the context of our extensive optical expertise.”

A special congratulations to Mike, John and the wonderful staff at Metro Optics on the opening of their fourth location, as well as a very warm “thank you” for all they do in the Bronx.

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.

“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y cómo ayudar a nuestro medio ambiente”.

De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.

Mucho ha cambiado en las casi cuatro décadas en las que he vivido cerca de Parkchester. Mientras crecía, las tiendas de mamá y papá eran el tejido de la comunidad. Aún puedo recordar los días en que las calles estaban llenas de pequeños negocios que incluían una floristería, una tienda de tarjetas Hallmark, una charcutería, una ferretería y una reparadora de calzado. La mayoría de estos negocios han desaparecido desde entonces, a la luz de los cada vez más altos alquileres que han llevado a muchos corporativos y cadenas nacionales a ocupar su lugar.

Pero todavía hay algunos que se han mantenido, incluyendo la franquicia local para el cuidado de los ojos, Metro Optics.

Tres generaciones de mi familia han confiado a Metro Optics el cuidado de nuestros ojos. El 9 de diciembre los propietarios organizaron un corte de cinta por su cuarta ubicación en el Bronx, en el centro comercial Throggs Neck.

Más de 100 personas asistieron al evento, que fue coorganizado por la Cámara de Comercio del Bronx.

Metro Optics, fundada en 1978 por Mike Ungaro, continúa ofreciendo atención oftalmológica de calidad a los residentes y ofrece una amplia selección de gafas, incluyendo lentes de diseñador. Los propietarios de Metro Optics organizan exámenes gratuitos de la vista en todo el condado y participan como contribuyentes en organizaciones sin fines de lucro, apoyan a los negocios locales y patrocinan eventos comunitarios locales.

En los más de 30 años que mi familia ha recibido atención oftalmológica en Metro Optics, los médicos y el personal siempre han sido corteses y profesionales. En nuestra experiencia, ellos buscan desarrollar relaciones con sus clientes y tratan a cada persona como individuo, no como un simple número.

No hay nada como la sensación de entrar y ser recibida personalmente por mi nombre, además de una serie de preguntas sobre mi familia: “¿Cómo están tus padres?”, “¿Y tus hermanas?”.

Más recientemente, la pregunta común ha sido, “¿Tu hijo rompió sus gafas nuevamente?”.

Agradezco los mensajes de texto y las tarjetas postales recordándome  nuestros exámenes anuales, y siempre puedo contar con ellos para reparaciones rápidas de emergencias y reemplazo de garantías.

Han sido algo más que profesionales de atención oftalmológica para nosotros y realmente parece que se preocupan por nuestro bienestar general.

La tienda original de Metro Optics se encuentra en la avenida Metropolitan, de ahí el nombre “Metro” Optics. Su segunda ubicación se estableció en Westchester Square, seguida de una tienda en Hunts Point y, más recientemente, su tienda insignia en el centro comercial Throggs Neck, conocido como “M4”.

Todas las industrias, prácticamente, están siendo alteradas por la tecnología, y la industria óptica no es la excepción.
