I Love the Bronx: Love your Block

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown. “I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
Last year the Bronx Park East Community Association (BPECA), which represents the Bronxdale, Pelham Parkway North and Allerton neighborhoods of Bronx Community Board 11, received a “Love Your Block” grant from the Citizens Committee of New York City.
The funding was used for “The Thwaites-Olinviille Love Your Block” project.
BPECA chairman Raphael Schweizer explains, “This project is a way for the Pelham Parkway North-Allerton neighborhood to visually beautify the block, unify the residents and add a positive feel to the community. Be it undertaking weekly beautification activities, building tree-guards, performing tree care, painting over graffiti-strewn fire boxes, walls and lamp-posts or doing park clean-ups, we instill a new sense of pride by getting passersby to become involved in doing something that has a permanent presence on their block.”
For eleven weeks, community members met to carry out different tasks.
People of all ages participated and engaged themselves in taking care of their community.
On the twelfth week, on June 29th, the project will end with a block party.
Last month BPECA was awarded another grant from Citizens Committee of New York City.
The funds will go to the production of over 3,000 brochures entitled “Summer Beautification Camp”.
The brochure will feature different beautification projects, art activities and volunteer opportunities being held this summer in the Bronx.
“As part of our efforts to provide youth with things to do this summer, and to prevent gun violence, we seek to provide alternative recreational activities for our young ones to participate in during these hot months,” noted Schweizer.
BPECA hosts a monthly community meeting and several community events throughout the year.
The group is actively engaged in the issues that affect the community.
Last year members held vigils, gun violence forums and coordinated free holiday events.
They recently mobilized community members and traveled to Manhattan to protest the rent hikes. They also collaborate with different organizations to provide a variety of workshops and even walking tours.

Yo Amo al Bronx: Ame su Bloque

Como parte de nuestra continua serie BFP destacando los diversos espacios favoritos, las cosas y la gente de nuestro condado, nos dirigimos a Nilka Martell, quien continúa explorando su lugar de orígen.
“Soy nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de descendencia puertorriqueña.
Asistente legal durante más de 17 años hasta diciembre del 2010, a partir de entonces ella ha estado dedicando tiempo a explorar el Bronx.
Su energía y entusiasmo son incansables, y admirables.
“Yo deseo que mis compañeros residentes estén conscientes e informados de cuán hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que éste ofrece, y cómo dar una mano de ayuda a nuestro medioambiente”.
Sobre este nuevo momento en su vida, Martell dice, “Nunca me he sentido con tanta vida”.
El año pasado la Asociación ‘Bronx Park East Community’ (BPECA, por sus siglas en inglés), la cual representa los vecindarios de Bronxdale, Pelham Parkway North y Allerton de la Junta Comunal 11, recibió una subvención de “Ame su Bloque” del Comité de Ciudadanos de la ciudad de Nueva York.
Los fondos fueron utilizados para el proyecto “The Thwaites-Olinviille Love Your Block”. El presidente de BPECA, Raphael Schweizer explica, “este proyecto es una manera de que el vecindario Pelham Parkway North-Allerton embellezca visualmente el bloque, una a los residentes y añada un sentimiento positivo a la comunidad. Ya sea realizando actividades de embellecimiento, construir protección para árboles, cuidar árboles, pintar sobre el graffiti desparramado, paredes y postes de luz o limpiar parques, infundimos un nuevo sentido de orgullo consiguiendo que los transeúntes se envuelvan en hacer algo que tiene una presencia permanente en su bloque.”
Por once semanas, miembros de la comunidad se reúnen para llevar a cabo diferentes tareas. Personas de todas las edades participaron y se comprometieron en cuidar su comunidad. En la doceava semana, el 29 de junio, el proyecto terminará con una fiesta de bloque.
El mes pasado BPECA obtuvo otra subvención del Comité de Ciudadanos de la ciudad de Nueva York. Los fondos se destinarán a la producción de más de 3,000 folletos titulados “Campamento de Embellecimiento de Verano”. El folleto presentará diferentes proyectos de embellecimiento, actividades de arte y oportunidades voluntarias llevadas a cabo este verano en el Bronx.
“Como parte de nuestros esfuerzos para proveerle a la juventud cosas que hacer este verano, y para prevenir la violencia con armas, buscamos proveer actividades recreativas alternas para que nuestros jóvenes participen durante estos calientes meses”, señaló Schweizer.
BPECA celebra una reunión comunal mensual y varios eventos comunales a través del año.
El grupo está activamente comprometido en los asuntos que afectan la comunidad.
El año pasado celebraron vigilias, foros de violencia contra las armas y coordinaron eventos gratuitos en los días de fiesta. Recientemente movilizaron a miembros de la comunidad y viajaron a Manhattan para protestas el alza en las rentas. También colaboran con diferentes organizaciones para proveer una variedad de talleres y hasta excursiones a pie.
