I Love the Bronx: In the Mix

Bronx hip-hop pioneers Grandmaster Melle Mel and Grandmaster Caz recently appeared in Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ first live performance of the song “Downtown” at the 2015 MTV VMAs show.
During the weeks before the performance, I had the opportunity to interview them on separate occasions right here in the Bronx.
Both are active members of Windows of Hip Hop (WOHH), a not-for-profit I helped to form.
Founded in 2012, WOHH is a Bronx-based economic development project promoting the educational, communal, and historical perspective of hip hop. The ultimate goal is to create a state of the art, fully interactive, educational institution dedicated to hip hop in the borough.
Though my role has lessened, I was elated when approached by its President, CEO and Founder, Melissa Libran, to conduct informal interviews with various board members including Grandmaster Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz, Frank Antonio, Michael Max Knobbe, Nicole Perrino and Dr. Walter Lizandro.
The interviews served to help raise funds, as the group seeks to raise $75,000 to bring hip-hop influenced education programs to 15,000 students in the New York City area.
Though the pioneers volunteer their time, the funds will be used to offset the expenses of transportation, educational supplies, audio and visual aids, staff and rentals.
It was a wonderful to see how much the organization has grown, what it has accomplished and where it is heading.
Its newest initiative involves bringing hip hop to schools directly with visits from various pioneers. After a visit to St. Joseph’s School, parents, staff and students were clearly motivated. As part of an existing literature program, the children spent the time writing bars, similar to poetry verses.
The visit also included a live performance, where students, staff and parents joined in singing Grandmaster Flash’s classic song “The Message”.
It was terrifically moving to witness how hip hop can be used to motivate students to express themselves in writing and spoken word. That has always been the genre’s greatest strength, creating a unique space for everyday voices to narrate their experiences, struggles and dreams.

Grandmaster Melle Mel y Grandmaster Caz, pioneros del hip-hop del Bronx, recientemente aparecieron en la primera presentación en vivo de Macklemore y Ryan Lewis de la canción “Downtown” en los Premios de Videos Musicales 2015 de MTV.
Durante las semanas previas a la presentación, tuve la oportunidad de entrevistarlos en ocasiones separadas aquí en el Bronx.
Ambos son miembros activos de Ventanas del Hip Hop (WOHH por sus siglas en inglés), una organización sin fines de lucro que ayudé a crear.
Fundado en 2012, WOHH es un proyecto de desarrollo económico del Bronx que fomenta la perspectiva educativa, comunitaria e histórica del hip hop. El objetivo final es crear una institución totalmente interactiva, educativa y de última generación dedicada al hip hop en el condado.
Aunque mi papel ha disminuido, me entusiasmé al ser contactada por su presidenta, directora general y fundadora, Melissa Libran, para realizar entrevistas informales con varios miembros de la junta, incluyendo a Grandmaster Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz, Frank Antonio, Michael Max Knobbe, Nicole Perrino y el Dr. Walter Lizandro.
Las entrevistas sirvieron para ayudar a recaudar fondos, ya que el grupo busca recaudar $75,000 dólares para llevar programas de educación influidos de hip-hop a 15,000 estudiantes en el área de la ciudad de Nueva York.
Aunque los pioneros ofrecen voluntariamente su tiempo, los fondos se utilizarán para compensar los gastos de transporte, material escolar, equipo visual y de audio, personal y alquileres.
Fue una maravilla ver lo mucho que la organización ha crecido, lo que ha logrado y hacia dónde se dirige.

Su nueva iniciativa consiste en llevar el hip hop directamente a las escuelas a través de visitas de varios pioneros. Después de una visita a la Escuela St. Joseph, los padres, el personal y los estudiantes estaban claramente motivados. Como parte de un programa existente de literatura, los niños pasaron el tiempo escribiendo compases, similares a los versos de poesía.
La visita también incluyó una presentación en vivo, donde los estudiantes, el personal y los padres se unieron para cantar la canción clásica de Grandmaster Flash “The Message”.
Fue tremendamente conmovedor ser testigo de cómo el hip hop se puede utilizar para motivar a los estudiantes a expresarse por escrito y la palabra hablada. Esa ha sido siempre la mayor fortaleza del género, la creación de un espacio único para que las voces cotidianas narren sus experiencias, luchas y sueños.
