I Love the Bronx- In Alliance

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown. “I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.

A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.

Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.

“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”

Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”

It was quite a busy, and successful, month for the Bronx River Alliance.

And there is much more to come.

On Thurs., Sept. 19th, the Upstream Soiree, the organization’s annual benefit, was held at the Schiff Family Great Hall in the Bronx Zoo. The evening began with a guest appearance by José the Beaver, in full costume, representing the beaver found living in the river after 200 years.

The event was hosted by Baron Ambrosia and live music was played by Ángel Rodríguez Sr. and his fellow musicians.

This year’s honorees were Arthur Aviles, dancer, choreographer and co-founder of the Bronx Academy of the Arts and Dance (BADF); Frances Beinecke, president of Natural Resources Defense Council; and Paul Elston, waterfront advocate and president of Friends of the Hudson River Greenway in the Bronx.

Just two days later, on Sept. 21st, the Bronx River Alliance hosted its Fifth Annual Coastline Cleanup at Soundview Park, part of the International Coastal Cleanup organized by the Ocean Conservancy. Over 130 volunteers gathered and collected over 100 bags of garbage. Volunteers tallied the kinds of garbage they collected, i.e., bottles, cans, bottle caps, plastic bags, food, foam and paper plates, etc. This information is useful in efforts to resolve the problem from its roots.

Among the volunteers were members of REI, Con Edison, Friends of Soundview Park, the G.Y.M. Project and Partnership for Parks. New York City Councilmember Annabel Palma, of District 18, pitched in along with several of her staff members and even some of their family members.

After years of collaborative efforts, the Alliance has also had the opportunity of witnessing the fruits of its labor in the completion of the Bronx Park segment of the Bronx River Greenway. Just short of a mile long, the path connects East 180th Street to Unionport Road. The Greenway provides a means of travel free from vehicular traffic, especially for pedestrians, bikers and roller skaters.

On Tues., Sept. 24th, a group of nearly 80 folks gathered at the East 180th Street entrance for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Words were shared by New York City Department of Parks Commissioner Veronica White, Bronx Borough Commissioner Hector Aponte, Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz, Jr., Assemblyman Luis Sepúlveda, Senator Gustavo Rivera, Mario Bruno, Assistant Commissioner, Department of Environmental Protection and Wendy Rodríguez, Chair, Community Board 6.

The Alliance provided scores of bikes and helmets for the event, allowing guests the opportunity to experience the greenway first-hand.

The fall season is a beautiful time to explore the river and get a different view of the changing leaves on the trees. If you haven’t experienced the Bronx River, here are some upcoming events.

•  On October 12 at 3 p.m., there will be a free open paddle at Starlight Park. Come on out and get a canoe. No registration is necessary. Anyone under 18 needs a waiver signed by an adult.
•  On October 25 at 9:30 a.m., a more extensive upper river paddle is being offered beginning at Shoelace Park, located at 219th Street and Bronx Blvd. The canoe trip includes portions of the river in Bronx Park Forest, the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo. There is a $25 registration fee for this event. Register at bronxriver.org.
•  On October 26 at 9 a.m., the Alliance will be hosting a tree planting event at Fort Knox, Gun Hill Road and Bronx Blvd. Over 100 trees will be planted along the river. Gloves and tools will be provided. For more information, please call 718.430.4665.

“Soy nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres preciosos niños del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dijo Martell, de descendencia puertorriqueña.

Paralegal por más de 17 años hasta diciembre del 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx.

Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.

“Quiero hacer a mis compañeros residentes concientes e informados de cuan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y como ofrecer una mano amiga a nuestro ambiente”.

De este nuevo tiempo en su vida, Martell dice, “nunca me he sentido más viva”.

Fue un mes muy ocupado y exitoso para la Alianza del Río Bronx.

Y hay mucho más por venir.

El jueves 19 de septiembre, el Upstream Soiree, el evento de beneficencia anual de la organización, se celebró en el Great Hall Schiff Family en el Zoológico del Bronx. La velada comenzó con una aparición de José el castor, con traje completo, representado al castor encontrado viviendo en el río después de 200 años. El evento fue dirigido por Baron Ambrosia y la música en vivo fue presentada por Ángel Rodríguez Sr. y sus compañeros músicos.

Los homenajeados de este año fueron Arthur Aviles, bailarín, coreógrafo y cofundador de la Academia de Arte y Danza del Bronx (BADD por sus siglas en inglés); Frances Beinecke, presidenta del Consejo para la defensa de los recursos naturales y Paul Elston, abogado y presidente de Amigos de la vía verde del río Hudson en el Bronx.

Sólo dos días después, el 21 de septiembre, la Alianza del Río Bronx celebró su Quinta Limpieza Litoral anual en Soundview Park, parte de la Limpieza Internacional de Costas organizada por Ocean Conservancy. Más de 130 voluntarios se reunieron y recogieron más de 100 bolsas de basura. Los voluntarios registraron los tipos de basura que recogieron: botellas, latas, tapas de botellas, bolsas de plástico, platos de alimentos de unicel y papel, etc. Esta información es útil en los esfuerzos para resolver el problema desde sus raíces. Entre los voluntarios estaban miembros de REI, Con Edison, Amigos de Soundview Park, el Proyecto G.Y.M. y la asociación de Parques.

La concejal de la ciudad de Nueva York Annabel Palma, del Distrito 18, apoyó junto con varios de los miembros de su personal e incluso algunos de los miembros de su familia. Después de años de esfuerzos de colaboración, la Alianza también ha tenido la oportunidad de ser testigo de los frutos de su trabajo de completar el segmento del parque de la vía verde del río Bronx. A corta distancia de una milla de largo, el camino conecta la calle 180 este con Unionport Road. La vía verde es un medio de desplazamiento libre de tráfico vehicular, especialmente para peatones, ciclistas y patinadores.

El martes 24 de septiembre, un grupo de cerca de 80 personas se reunieron en la entrada este de la calle 180 para la ceremonia. Algunas palabras fueron compartidas por la comisionada del Departamento de Parques de la ciudad de Nueva York, Verónica White; el comisionado del condado del Bronx, Héctor Aponte; el presidente del condado del Bronx, Rubén Díaz, Jr.; el asambleísta Luis Sepúlveda; el senador Gustavo Rivera; Mario Bruno, comisionado adjunto del Departamento de Protección Ambiental y Wendy Rodríguez, presidenta de la Junta Comunitaria 6. La Alianza proporcionó decenas de bicicletas y cascos para el evento, permitiendo a los invitados la oportunidad de disfrutar de la vía verde de primera mano.

La temporada de otoño es una época hermosa para explorar el río y tener una visión diferente de las cambiantes hojas de los árboles. Si usted no ha experimentado el Río Bronx, aquí hay algunos eventos.

• El 12 de octubre a las 3 p.m., habrá una regata abierta gratuita en Starlight Park. Vamos, salga y consiga una canoa. No es necesario registrarse. Cualquier persona menor de 18 años necesita una dispensa firmada por un adulto.
• El 25 de octubre a las 9:30 a.m., una más extensa regata en la parte superior del río tendrá lugar, comenzando en Shoelace Park, situado en la calle 219 y Bronx Boulevard.
