As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
Bronx resident Mike Gupta is this year’s recipient of Con Edison highest honor – the Living Our Values award.
The annual award is presented in recognition to employees who “exemplify the values of service, teamwork and excellence, and who demonstrate concern for the quality of life in their communities.”
Gupta is an engineering supervisor in Con Edison’s Engineering department. Last year, he developed an interactive map displaying the work of the company’s Gas Operations. The map was recognized as a great planning tool and was coined the “Gupta map”. As a result, other departments are implementing its use.
“Mike seeks and accepts responsibility and knows the value of teamwork. He’s the kind of person who is not afraid to roll up his sleeves and get right to work,” said Edward Foppiano, Con Edison Senior Vice President of Gas Operations.
Outside the scope of his employment, Gupta is also an avid volunteer.
I had the pleasure of meeting him several years ago when we volunteered together with the Bronx River Alliance.
Since then, I’ve had the opportunity of seeing his dedication to the Bronx community firsthand.
We’ve worked together at different events planting trees, removing invasive weeds and cleaning up local streets. He has also acted as the master of ceremonies at a number of Bronx River Alliance events, all on a volunteer basis.
He is also a Bronx history buff. With the help of local historian Hank Stroobants, Gupta conducts several walking tours as part of the Wakefield, Williamsbridge and Woodlawn History Program.
He also serves as a member of the East Bronx History Forum which meets once a month at the Huntington Library in Westchester Square.
His research on archived maps has been included in several presentations and provides a clear picture of the transformation the Bronx has undergone from a rural area to its present-day urban setting.
As a friend, Gupta is one in a million. Countless times, I have called on him for computer repair, assistance with photographs and even for a ride to a meeting. His is always willing to help. He is genuinely an amazing friend to all that know him.
His latest walking tour, part of the Bronx River Ramble, was scheduled for April 26, but was cancelled given weather conditions. There is another planned in the coming weeks.
Hats off to Mike Gupta for his accomplishments and for the receiving this year’s Living Our Values award!

“Yo soy nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.
Una asistente legal por más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, que desde entonces ha estado dedicando su tiempo a explorar el Bronx.
Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes estén conscientes e informados de lo encantadora que nuestra ciudad es, lo que ofrece, y la forma de echar una mano en nuestro entorno.”
De este nuevo tiempo en su vida, Martell dice, “nunca me he sentido tan viva.”
Mike Gupta, residente del Bronx, es el ganador de este año del más alto honor de Con Edison – el premio Viviendo Nuestros Valores.
El premio anual es presentado en reconocimiento a empleados que ‘ejemplifican los valores del servicio, trabajo en equipo y excelencia, y que demuestran preocupación por la calidad de vida en sus comunidades”.
Gupta es supervisor de ingeniería en el Departamento de Ingeniería de Con Edison. El año pasado desarrollo un mapa interactivo mostrando el trabajo de Operaciones de Gas de la compañía. El mapa fue reconocido como una gran herramienta de planificación y fue llamado el “Mapa Gupta”. Como resultado, otros departamentos están implementando su uso.
“Mike busca y acepta responsabilidades y conoce el valor del trabajo en equipo. Es la clase de persona que no tiene miedo de enrollarse las mangas y ponerse a trabajar”, dijo Edward Foppiano, Vicepresidente de Operaciones de Gas de Con Edison.
Fuera del ámbito de su empleo, Gupta es un ávido voluntario.
Tuve el placer de conocerlo varios años atrás cuando fuimos voluntarios de la Alianza del Río Bronx. Desde entonces he tenido la oportunidad de ver de cerca su dedicación a la comunidad del Bronx.
Hemos trabajado juntos en diferentes eventos sembrando árboles, removiendo malas hierbas y limpiando calles locales. También ha actuado como maestro de ceremonias de muchos eventos de la Alianza del Río Bronx, todos sobre una base de voluntario.
Además de voluntario ambiental, también es un aficionado de la historia del Bronx. Con la ayuda del historiador local Hank Stroobants, Gupta conduce varias caminatas como parte del Programa de Historia Wakefield, Williamsbridge y Woodlawn.
También sirve como miembro del Foro de Historia del Este del Bronx el cual se reúne una vez al mes en la Biblioteca Huntington en Westchester Square.
Su trabajo de investigación de mapas archivados ha sido incluido en varias presentaciones y han proporcionado una clara imagen de la transformación que el Bronx ha experimentado de un área rural a su actual entorno urbano.
Como amigo, Gupta es uno en un millón. Un sinnúmero de veces lo he llamado para una reparación de computadora, asistencia con fotografías e incluso para asistir a una reunión. Siempre está dispuesto ha ayudar. No es atención especial, es realmente un increíble amigo para todos los que lo conocen.
Su última caminata, parte del ‘Bronx River Ramble’, fue programada para el 26 de abril pero fue cancelada debido a las condiciones del tiempo, pero habrá otra pronto.
Me quito el sombrero ante Mike Gupta por sus logros y por recibir el premio de este año de ‘Viviendo Nuestros Valores’.
