I Love the Bronx – Goblins at the Lounge

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
If you haven’t visited Beso Lounge on 204th Street and Hull Avenue, you’ve been missing out.
It is one of those local places where friends come together in a safe space to enjoy music, drinks, and on some nights, salsa classes. It’s the kind of place where folks get to know you by name, and you always feel welcomed.
And on Sat., Oct. 19th, the lounge was converted into a kids’ zone.
It was a Halloween costume party, hosted by Bronxmama.com, that drew over 100 people, with parents, kids and loads of laughs.
Princesses, witches and superheroes, coupled with face painting and accessories, allowed kids’ imaginations to soar into a wonderland of fun. The lounge was filled with cobwebs, spiders and a smoke machine, and became a magical place for kids.
Nicole Perrino, founder of Bronxmama.com, and a mother of two, added a very special twist to her event: it was candy-free.
While kids may associate Halloween with sweets, parents know how affected children can get from the sugar rush, not to mention how unhealthy it is for a young child to consume excessive sugar.
With this in mind, Perrino teamed up with several sponsors who provided healthy alternatives. Some of the sponsors included Happy Family (organic juices); Dannon (drinkable yogurts); Funny Face (50% less sugar fruit snacks); Beanfields (bean and rice chips); and Acuator, Inc. (apples and chocolate-covered pretzels).
Children enjoyed hours of arts and crafts and games from Oriental Trading. It was wonderful to see parents engaged in play with their kids and work on projects they later took home.
The young girls also had another treat – nails by Pink Sisha, located on East Tremont in Throggs Neck. You should have seen how they reacted to polish and glitter on their nails!
There was freeze dance, limbo and hot “skull” (instead of hot potato).
Parents were thrilled to be there – and some came in full costumes as well.
It is these types of events that provide a safe and healthy alternative to the usual custom of knocking on doors for tricks or treats.

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.
Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro vecindario, lo que ofrece y cómo prestar ayuda a nuestro medio ambiente”.
De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.
Si usted no ha visitado Beso Lounge en la calle 204 y la avenida Hull, se lo ha estado perdiendo.
Es uno de esos lugares locales donde los amigos se reúnen en un lugar seguro para disfrutar de música, bebidas, y en algunas noches, clases de salsa. Es el tipo de lugar donde la gente te conoce por tu nombre y siempre te hacen sentir bienvenido.
Y el sábado 19 de octubre, el salón se convirtió en una zona para niños.
Fue una fiesta de disfraces de noche de brujas, organizada por Bronxmama.com, que atrajo a más de 100 personas, padres, niños y un montón de risas.
Princesas, brujas y superhéroes, junto con la pintura de cara y accesorios, permitieron que la imaginación de los niños se disparara en un paraíso de diversión. El salón estaba lleno de telarañas, arañas y una máquina de humo, y se convirtió en un lugar mágico para los niños.
Nicole Perrino, fundadora de Bronxmama.com y madre de dos hijos, añadió un toque muy especial a su evento: era libre de dulces.
Mientras que los niños pueden asociar noche de brujas con los dulces, los padres saben bien hasta dónde los niños afectados pueden llegar por el subidón de azúcar, por no hablar de lo poco saludable que es para un niño de corta edad consumir azúcar en exceso.
Con esto en mente, Perrino se asoció con varios patrocinadores que proporcionaron alternativas saludables. Algunos de los patrocinadores fueron: Happy Family (jugos orgánicos); Dannon (yogures bebibles); Funny Face (snacks de frutas con 50% menos de de azúcar); Beanfields (papas fritas de frijol y arroz), y Acuator, Inc. (manzanas y pretzels cubiertos de chocolate).
Los niños disfrutaron de horas de artes y oficios y juegos. Fue maravilloso ver a los padres participando con sus hijos y trabajando en proyectos que luego se llevaron a casa.
Las jóvenes también tuvieron otro regalo: uñas de Pink Sisha, ubicado en East Tremont en Throggs Neck. ¡Tendrían que haber visto cómo reaccionaron al pulido y brillo en sus uñas!
Hubo juegos de baile encantado, limbo y “cráneo caliente” (en lugar de papa caliente).
Los padres estaban encantados de estar allí, y algunos llegaron con disfraces también.
Este tipo de evento proporciona una alternativa segura y saludable a la costumbre de llamar a las puertas para recibir golosinas.
